Boone does alot of stupid things on defense and their offense doesn't have a clear direction. Some times they do nothing but throw out of trips and some times they try their sophomore tailback. He's tough.

Right now our defense is firing on all 8 cylinders. They have looked dominating in nearly every scrimmage so far. Looks like they may lead the conference again this year. We usually are near the top in total defense in the conference every year since Coach Venable became the head coach and defensive coordinator.

Don't be so quick to judge based on some pointless jamboree. What we looked like during that one-quarter of action doesn't reflect anything.

What did everyone think about the jamboree?
  7. Check out Chucky Lindholm from Volunteer. He was the conference player of the year last season as a sophomore in basketball and he is a D1 prospect in football at Quarterback. He is 6'6 and has a great arm.

Meodan I wasn't trying to sound defensive, I was merely trying to give everyone a view of the situation from the inside out. And no one is saying that this kid is going to make or break this team because this team is above and beyond any single player. But why not embrace all the help and new additions to the team. This kid wouldn't be a topic at all if it was someone that had already been going to Volunteer and just decided to come out for football. The thing is everyone sterotypes the transfers that we get as "bad apples." Alot of times kids and their parents want to get their children out of a bad environment by bring them to Volunteer. If you look at the transfers that have came here in the past few years to play football you will notice that while they were still in high school they were pretty good kids, staying out of trouble because they were in a totally different environment. And it was only after they left Volunteer and returned to Kingsport that they found themselves back in trouble. I think it has been a good thing that we have gotten the transfers that we have because it not only helped our team over the years but it allowed those kids to have a shot at getting their diploma. And that is something that they may not have gotten if they would have stayed at DB. Embrace the kids we get because they are still someone's child and not just some athlete that is from Kingsport.

I agree with alot of what you are saying. I too believe that we would have a great team with or without Jay Hughes but better with him than without him. And to answer any question of why he has a starting position so soon after coming here, it is because the best person for the job is going to play in any team's system. I know that doesn't seem fair to alot of people but life isn't fair. Trust me! But he hasn't taken the position of someone who has been there for three or four years like you said. He has filled a position at reciever that was vacated by graduation and the next runner up for that position didn't play football last year anyway. So what is your argument? In practice he has been lining up in the backfield because Randy Jones' play has been limited. No one is replacing Randy and no one is replacing Josh Mellons because both of those athletes are too valuable to the program but make no mistake, the coaching staff will play the kid who has the best opportunity to help our team. Doing this does not only help Jay Hughes because he has a position but it helps the whole team because he is valuable. Everyone we get that can help is valuable.

No...that would be Jay Hughes. Chris Hughes is still in Juvenille detention. He is supposed to be coming also but he won't get there until about week two.

The next scrimmage is Friday the 8th at 4:30 against Betsy @ Volunteer. And the kid that came from DB is Jay Hughes. He is an incredible athlete. The coaches at DB think that he is just as talented as Lamon Williams but not 6'3. he has great speed and excellent hands. He will help us out alot. He seems like he is a pretty good kid also.

Well, the first scrimmage of the summer is over and it was a good one. Although we shot ourselves in the foot with a few stupid penalties, we faired very well against a very good team from Tennessee High. We won the scrimmage 1 score to 0. But the battle was won on the defensive side of the ball. Our defense absolutely shut down the Viking attack. And with the help of our recent addition from DB, Chucky threw the only score of the day for about 65 yards. Things are really looking up in Church Hill.

  18. The thing about supplements is that you got to know what kind to take. Creatine, for example is probably the most widely used kind, however it is effective it is also addictive. It is not addictive in the senxe that you crave it to survive, it is addictive in the sense that you body become used to relying on it and once you stop taking the supplement you have difficulty becoming stronger and being able to sustaion your strength. I have used supplements during high school and have found that your body reacts best and lasts the longest when nothing is used and hard work becomes your supplement.
  19. Dobyns-Bennett would have to be my pick. No matter about state titles, they have won more football games than any school in the state. If that doesn't make you the best...what does?
  20. Check out Randy Jones at Volunteer. Over 1600 yds as a junior.

  23. There were two from Volunteer to sign with Lees-Mcray to play basketball. 6'3 guard Ben Southam and 6'7 post Marcus Bellamy.

The thing about having a winning program is that you must have at least a few good seasons to get more kids interested in playing. The problem at Volunteer is that not enough athletes come out to play. If you continually have a losing program some of the athletes go to the other nearby schools instead of trying to repair a battered program. And what is happening now is that the kids are staying and all of the sports at Volunteer are benefiting from it. This past year was the best season for nearly every sport at VHS. Football had it's first winning season, basketball won 20 games for the first time, baseball had it's best season ever, and boys track won the conference for the first time. Things are turning around at last. I just hope we can get the support from the fans to give these kids the recognizition that they deserve.
  25. Another great rivalry is Volunteer vs. Cherokee. Every year the entire population of Hawkins county comes to see on of the most exciting and heated rivalries in the area.
