Watched Alcoa vs. Tyner last night and was very impressed with the Tornadoes. When they are locked in defensively like they were last night, they are very good. Jahvin Carter is an absolute scoring machine and just keeps getting better. Scoring over 3000 points in his high school career is just ridiculous. Their young players are very talented and big contributors, too. Freshman Jahmir Dean is a big time athlete and can jump out of the gym. If he keeps growing and gets stronger, he will be a high major prospect, imo. He is the type of rangy athlete that college recruiters love.

The future for Alcoa and Maryville boys is so bright right now.  I'm not sure you can "replace" Jahvin, but dang, there is so much young talent on that roster.

  2. Stings for us WB fans especially.  Easiest path to Murfreesboro in a long time for our region.  And my opinion, it's the 1st and 3rd best teams from our region who will most likely advance.  Good luck to both of them ... and you better watch our for Maryville ... cause as good as they are this year, they get better next year!

22,23 and 2 are sophomores. That is really exciting.

You've also got Luke Sigmund coming back next year from injury.  The Akard kid is really good, but I think Luke will add even more of a weapon in the post spot because of his athleticism.  Will need to develop some physicality, but I think he will do that.  I expect Maryville to make some trips to Murfreesboro , maybe this year, for sure the next couple.

It’s still strange to me why the previous staff didn’t try to develop the 6-9 kid earlier. Both he and his 6-6 classmate are kids that you are lucky to get in high school. An example of some coaches thinking their coaching is more important than the talent they have.

The new staff has done a great job with the players they have. The game with WB will be a big hoops game in the county and district. Anybody recall the last time LA lost to Murvil in basketball? It seems like it has been lopsided for a while now.

Govs have won 3 out of the last 4.  Maryville did get them once last year.  Friday's game should be a good one.

  5. Well, Fulton took it to the Gov's last night.  So much speed and quickness and depth.  WB is still a team to be reckoned with in the area, but right now they are too dependent on their senior combo of Windle and Roberts.  Those two scored 42 of their 53 points last night.  I'm impressed with the heart of the Cortez kid ... he looked like he belonged out there.  The rest of the Governor team, at least last night, didn't appear to be ready for the big stage.

But it's a tournament sport and if anyone can have them ready, it's Coach Windle.

Here's what was awesome, to see players from both squads circle up, mingled together with their arms around each other's shoulders praying together at the end.  Thank God for Christian coaches like Kevin and Coach Wright.

how can that be? how can a school like william blount beat a school like bearden. with the talent pool that bearden has, i just Don't understand. Im not arguing. I just don't get that.

Blount has the best "1-2 combination" in East Tennessee, not just in their district.  If they do manage to beat Bearden this year, that will be one of the big reasons.

  7. True or false.  Is NIL applicable to high schools in the state and are schools actually allowed to "pay" athletes now?  At one time, Maryville's success and the quality of their coaching staff (both professionally and personally) 'recruited' some really good players and families to move into their zone.  If $$ is actually involved now, that changes the whole dynamic, does it not?

Really asking.  No "veiled agenda" here.

WB playing defense. They gave up 27 points to Karns who was shut out vs HVA? l know most points cam in the 2nd half vs Karns, but they still gave up four TDs.

Gov's first 6 quarters the defense looked very stout.  Last 2 quarters, not so good.  I always cheer for WB, but this one is a hard one to pick, based on the performances of the two teams last year when they played.  Have not seen Heritage this season, but the Gov's have looked like a completely different team against two less-than-sterling opponents.  I believe the difference will be WB's quarterback.  In my opinion, he'll be the best player on the field Friday night.

BTW, sure would be nice to play a Blount County High School Team and NOT have to pay one from NEW YORK CITY to come to town........But......I DO Know the reason WHY! :thumb:

If, as you stated, Maryville only has 8 more players than Alcoa, then why would heat and depth impact Alcoa more than Maryville? That’s all I was asking.

  10. Barney, thanks for the correction on that final bowl game score.  I spent that evening at Blount Memorial with a broken leg, but I guess my brain must have been addled as well.  Curious, where did you get your Friendsville football history?  Coach Moore is my uncle.  He's still going strong.

The DNA in William Blount came mostly from Friendsville High School back in 1978 where football was hit or miss but mainly a miss but basketball saved the school from total humiliation just as it's decendants at WB carry the same torch brought down from one generation to the next. Unfortunately the program was bred like this from the beginning and it has beaten many coaches down that have tried to change it. The last coach (Shad) let the cattle out of the fence and let them run wild  especially during fall break time. It will take a miricale to even get this program back to Friendsville standards which wasn't much. The Union County game will be the one to watch for the Bottom Breeders Cup Award for 2023 I believe.

If your logic on the "dna" and "Friendsville" was correct, then explain why Heritage has never had long-term success?  I mean, after all, their "dna" came from Walland High School.  Friendsville was not considered the Class A "powerhouse" that Walland was, but they had several good football squads down through years.  Won several Foothills Conference championships.  The 78 team you mention, I guess it was "hit".  I know a little bit about that team.   Finished the year 8-3, losing to eventual state champion Alcoa, choked the next week against Porter, and then lost to Madisonville 7-6 in a bowl game.  Defeated Webb, Seymour, and Gat-Pitt that year, who were all three quality programs.  Charlie Finley and Kenny Byrd, Jr were coaches and they were outstanding.  And a lot of that team was underclassmen.  Friendsville sent a quality core of players to WB.

I'm not arguing that the program has hit bottom, but it's not Friendsville's fault.  :)

I know the mother ask the Maryville coaches what can they do for her. I think they were so shocked  they didn't know what to think. Far as Powell or any other high school no one is giving anyone something under the table or that would hit the street news faster than a coach messing around with his high school baby sitter. The secrect would get out and there would go the coaches job and the school would get some nice vacation time off from playing high school football for a year or two. I've met enough parents over the years at Maryville and ask how they came to this program and it's sure a different story than what I heard on the high school rumor vine after it grew legs and took off running. Usually it was either one of two different stories, either the dad wanted the best way possible to make his kid shine and brought them here or someone referred them to the program. Dan Brooks who was recruiting for Clemson knew Jay Guillermo was moving from North Carolina his junior year over a parents new job at Denso was told Ellis was the best offensive line coach in high school he knew of. I know for a fact Danny Spradlin who worked for Dylan Jackson's dad knew his dad wasn't happy with Farragut referred them to Maryville. I know those folks personally but to hear it from an outsider something was exchanged to get them there.

Curious…which one of Guillermo’s parents worked for Denso?

Everybody loves transfers when they come their way.

There isn't a school in Knox County, nor the entire area, that hasn't benefitted from transfer students who happened to be good athletes, too.

Agreed HTV.  Lots of respect for Coach Courtney.  Would never question his integrity.  He says, "I don't like it."  And I know he's talking about coaches/players doing 'under-handed stuff'.  But I bet he "did like" having William Blount's best player transfer in to his team for his senior season last year.
