  1. someone close to the william blount program told me that they were gonna wear camouflage uniforms and allow the players to smoke on the sidelines to attract more players next year.....just saying

I heard that too Jetjock!  Also heard that Maryville had switched their deal with Nike and was going to be using Ralph Lauren designed uni's next year and serving cocktails on the sideline at halftime. :)

  2. Reminds me of going up to Mr and Mrs. T's for lunch-our cafeteria was too small to feed everybody!!! I can remember my crazy brother (Dan) stepping off campus and lighting one up as soon as he could!!!

Can't wait til the game!!! the warden gave me a good behavior pass, but it's only for 12 hours-it'll be a quick trip to the Black Hole and back to iceland (aka: boone).  See ya'll friday!!!

    Spank,

I was pretty close with the "T's" back in those days.  Mr. T once told me that when Maryville took away the student's privilege to leave campus at lunch, he figured it cost him around  20 thousand a year in revenue.  That's a whole lot of hot dogs !

  3. Very impressive win to open season by Maryville over Jefferson County 70-68. Maryville shot the lights out and led the whole game but held on for dear life down the stretch. The Upchurch brothers who moved in from Mississippi are going to be great additions to the program. Headrick, Petree, and Tallent also looked greatly improved from last year.

Gotta give Jefferson County some credit, too. I know they went to state last year and they have a good shot to make it this year, too. Most teams would have lost by 25+ against Maryville the way the Rebels shot it tonight but Maryville couldn't stop Jeff County in the paint at all. Rebels will be better inside when they get Bryce Miller back from football but they are going to be a perimeter oriented team for sure this year.

    Yeah Norman Dale,

Not sure everyone realizes the significance of the Rebel's win last night.  JC is tough competition (I would assume they were at full strength) and Maryville is going to improve a lot once football is over.  Did you get a chance to see the Lowe kid for Maryville?  He's gonna be a good one in time!!!

  4. Heritage looked good in the jamboree (which doesn't really mean much, I know).  They may have been the only team at full strength.  WB, Maryville, and Alcoa were all playing with depleted rosters (Maryville & Alcoa because of football, WB had three of their best players in street clothes due to injury).

If / when the Governors get everyone healthy, they will be competitive with most everyone in their district I think.  Unfortunately, it will probably be January at the earliest before that happens.  I do believe WB will have one of the best freshmen in the district this year.

  5. Couldn't help but feel a tad sorry for the lady who asked her husband going in the gate if we "are playing West Virginia after seeing the WV on the Walker Valley equipment trailer. Skeptical of her overall interest in being there.

    No Lie

I would have to pick West Virginia if they played the Rebels. There's another IFL loss for you guys. :)

  6. With the newly approved increase to the sales tax, there appears to be some new $$ available. Maybe the BCBOE is ready to spend some $$ to make al the necessary changes that are needed to improve the football program in LA. Why not? Other school systems are spending hundreds of thousands for fake grass and jumbotrons. What's a few tens of thousands for additional football coaches?

As stated during coaching changes past, one guy is not going to make the difference. The one guy will need some help from many directions. Some assistant coaching help, administrative help, booster help, player help, recruiting help, etc. He will definitely need support as he cuts ties to the parents who yell from the stands and follow the coaches to the dressing room. He will need support from the coaches and administration as he cuts ties to the players who backtalk, throw helmets, lay out of practice, skip workouts, etc. He will need support from the boosters and administration as he implements his ideas of creating excitement on the football field. He will need support/patience of everyone as the season records may get worse for a year or two instead of better as the roster may dwindle to 25-35. But at least those 25-35 families can be counted on as a solid foundation to build a program.

IMO-one guy can't do it all and it would be another wasted effort to simply replace one guy and expect everything to be solved. It has not all been the HC's fault in LA. There has been plenty of blame to spread around.

    StrongX,

The necessary steps you have listed above ... do you believe this is already underway at Heritage under Hammontree's leadership?  Just curious.

  7. I just can't understand how WB and really Heritage have been so bad for so long. Seeing Hammontree at HHS gave me hope the County teams would be more competitive. I don't know what it's going to take at those schools but I hope for the best every year. Good luck finding a quality coach this year Govman.

FBE ... "IF" we are looking for a new head coach--or if something is in the works--it will be a total surprise to me.  Personally I'm a big fan of Coach Ridge.

And as I often like to remind folks, Heritage has been "bad" a lot longer than WB has!   I've never thought the hole we had to dig ourselves out of was near as deep as the job Coach Hammontree faces at Heritage.  But with each passing season ...

  8. Gov i'm a perfectionist. Can't stand things not to be done right and that's why I get out of control sometimes. Running out of Chick-Fil-A's, eight minute quarters, The Stupid 32 and trying to get you to realize W.B. isn't going 5-5 this year are enough to drive someone crazy.

Barney please don't confuse me with your pal Gov91. I have never predicted what WB's record will be this year. If they do manage to win the next two I will be thrilled. If they don't I'm still proud to be a Governor supporter.

  9. 20 cans is all it takes if a skunk sprays you. So it takes more if you go to County Farm Road to watch a ballgame your saying.

Yeah ... it might take 25 - 30, we're so close to the "dump" you know !!!  At least it's not as bad as it was at Carter when they were located next to the sewage treatment plant.  Did you ever go to a game over there?

I love you Barney, but you're being awfully hard on us poor county folks.

  10. Well William Blount is going green folks. In order to save on the light bill tonight they played eight minute quarters instead of ten minutes. Was a good game at one time but Maryville pulled away in the second half. Maybe that was the reason we played eight minutes to help save face. This place reminds me of the old Everett High School Bulldogs because you could expect something good and stupid like that to happen there also. William Blount JV did look half way decent and the QB sure looked good from what I saw.

Wow ... "good and stupid WB folks" conspired together to shorten the game ...

Or perhaps, coaches from both schools represented got together before the game started and made a mutual decision to play 8 minute quarters.  Does that mean that the Maryville people are "good and stupid" also?  Just curious.

  11. Are any schools interested in William Blount's running back? He's a horse

Not sure Dave.  Devin Fair (the back being referred to) has flown under the radar a little because he wasn't able to carry the football until week four due to an injury.  But he has certainly been impressive since ... good size, good speed, hits the hole hard, always seems to be going 'downhill'.  He has had an "unusual" career at WB to say the least.  See you Thursday?

  12. Because of their "team concept" you don't hear so much about Jaylyn Burgess at Maryville High, but it would not surprise me a bit to see him playing at as high--or higher--a level in college as any of the feature backs that have been mentioned in this post.  He's a rare mix of speed, strength, intelligence, and maybe most importantly... hard work.

  13. A little advice for the gov fans: avoid parking in the lot for the UT soccer fields. Unless you want to travel back in time 30 years and deal with the UT police again.

Strong X , do your reckon the "statue of limitations" would be in effect for several unpaid UT parking tickets I received in the early 80's? I would hate to get on their "radar" after all these years ... I've been laying low, so thanks for the head's up. :)

  14. Barney,  isn't it funny how folks love to exaggerate (i.e. lie about) their "high school recruitment".  And parents are often the worst, trying to embellish their child's ability and how "in demand" he/she is.  A couple of years ago, I listened to a dad (who I've known most of his life) tell a bunch of us that Coach Quarles had called his 7th grade son on numerous occasions  to attempt to get him to come to Maryville.  Of course, he said, Coach Rankin had contacted him several times as well.  After he finished, I casually told him that Coach Quarles was my neighbor, that I spoke to him almost every day, and that I would certainly put in a good word for his son.  The dad suddenly got very uneasy, kind of red-faced, and told me, "that's ok, I wouldn't want you to do anything illegal."  :)

BTW , my eighth grade year at Bungalow Elementary, Coach Bill Wallace (from Friendsville High) came to my basketball practice one afternoon and told me I should consider coming to Friendsville High.  I did ... and was cut from the basketball team my freshman year !!!  Now there's a recruitment story for you.

  15. sc_kicker1_zpsb4958ffd.jpg

This is all playing out on FB.

Not that I'm an expert, but I have watched lots of bands performances.  I noticed that the clock operator had to add more time on to the clock at halftime because it was going to 0:00 while MHS band was still on field.  It seemed to me that Sevier County's half-time performance was longer than what is typically allocated for the visiting band.  Nothing else took place at halftime and I'm assuming Maryville did their standard home program ???
