  1. The Storm they weathered was just the 1st front coming through.  I bet they're nervous until June. I think some parents might take a good long look hat their kid's life will look like for the next four years, especially if they talk to folks that have been through it.

Those of us that love and support William Blount--and who base our opinions on more than just football--are not "nervous" about anything.  Incredible school -- incredible leadership -- drawing more and more recognition academically every year.  It's a great school, just like Maryville, Alcoa, and Heritage are great schools.  I'm a parent who "went through it" with three kids and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything in the world.  Proud to be a William Blount graduate married to a William Blount graduate and father of three William Blount Graduates.

Heard it was a little more than that, but who's counting. At the beginning of next season, their fan favorites will predict a 8-9 game win season. Then, when it doesn't happen, they will run excuse ads about losing players to other schools. Funny but sad. Smh....

Who's "they"? You talk a lot about "they" in your excessive amount of posts about William Blount. I'm Gary Stinnett...I'm one of the "they" you love to talk about so much. I don't recall predicting 8-9 wins for WB. Neither has ET Coach or Jake-- two other WB guys who will readily identify themselves and not hide behind a screen name posting venom and hate about another local school. Coach T been good fun and games for many of us from WB, Maryville, Alcoa, and Heritage for years. We love to poke fun at times but we also respect one another and even apologize when necessary. Take some lessons from Scot50, or Alcoa Painted Bridge, or BC SPORTS FAN...great Alcoa fans who don't feel the need to constantly denigrate other schools.

  3. What an impressive win for the Governors tonight ... 65-41.  Govs were dominant the entire game.  Only bright spot for Admirals was the Rogers kid.  Blount is just so deep ... and they have so many shooters.  When they are "on" ... they are really tough.

BTW ... of all my years of going to high school basketball games, Farragut by far has the worst P.A. system I've ever heard (or better yet, not heard).  Their announcer sounds like the school teacher in Charlie Brown movies.  I don't mean it's him, it's the speakers.  Just awful.

  4. Gov, I understand what you are saying and agree. Teams cant let it get to a point where the officials have a chance to decide it. Michigan had 3 series in the second had where they went three and out and only gained 5 yards when they had the lead. If they take care of business; it never gets to OT; and I don't like OSU. Maryville had a great team that year. If Maryville could have stopped Dodson from scoring one less time; they would have won. I am a Mt Juliet fan and we lost at Whitehaven by 6 in the semis that year.

My hat is off to GQ and his staff and team for the job they do every year. A great program. I would be willing to bet they will be back playing Oakland next year for the right to play for the championship.

    good post BKisler
  5. Maryville lost in 2012 because they could not stop Whitehaven running back. No body could. Whitehaven was the better team that night.

Understand your general theory here.  A ballgame is more than just one play ... and there are other opportunities throughout the course of the game to determine who wins and who loses.  And yes, that rb for Whitehaven was really, really good.  But there are occasions where you can point to one specific mistake by officials that directly determines the outcome of a game.  In the case of Maryville vs Whitehaven I believe one could say this.  The referees were caught off guard by the play Maryville executed perfectly and they threw a flag that should not have been thrown.  Had they not ... Maryville would have won the game.  I would contend this was the case this past weekend in the Ohio State vs Michigan game.  After watching the replay over and over, it appeared as if the ref's made a  mistake on the spotting of the ball on OSU's 4th down play in ot.  IF the ref's get this right, Michigan wins the game.  Yes, Michigan had other opportunities to win the game, but you can't completely ignore the fact that "one mistake by an official (s)" is capable of changing the final outcome of a game.  And by the way, don't throw all the Maryville fans to the wolves for my post ... I'm a William Blount fan. :)

  6. Maryville needs more size on the O-Line. It's a shame that the local teams and in-district teams haven't figured out GQ's schemes yet. Maryville has built a power house full of good high school players. How many Maryville players in the last 15 years have started FBS or FCS games? All you have to do is punch them in the face, no team should succeed in 6A football with 220 lb offensive lineman. There are some lean years coming.

Lord Infamous! Hadn't heard from you in forever. How are you old friend?

  7. WB has some great teachers and great students. As do all of our county's schools and Greenback. I've stated before that consolidation was the worst thing that happened to Blount county schools. For most kids, smaller community schools are better.

There are problems at WB just like there are at all schools. With the size of the school and the large distance that the students live away from the school, I feel sometimes the problems are harder to address.

Someone told me the other day that he was looking at an old WB yearbook and was really surprised to see how many former WB athletes and top 10 percent  students sent their kids to other schools. He asked why would those parents send their kids some where else?

I think its really about those parents deciding what is the best fit for their child. I think its about school culture, school size, opportunities, atmosphere, parent's own experiences, distance from schools and where their child feels the most comfortable.

Parents that have options are usually going to put their child in a situation where they will be happy and successful.

The WB bashing does seem to be growing lately, but I don't think its directed at the kids or even the teachers. I think the issues are correctable and I see a lot of hard work going on to correct some of the problems.

I agree with you post but I believe you left out one thing.  Sports.  Some parents send their kids to other schools because of the sports programs. And PLEASE NOTE, I said "some" ... not "all".   And I'm not downing that ... that's ok.  But people need to be willing to own it.  I'm convinced that if WB's football team was upper tier, we would not see as many parents/kids in our zone go elsewhere.

  8. I am pretty sure what the biggest problem is......keeping kids at home! Maryville and Alcoa have benefited greatly with county kids attending and playing football at their schools. The last few years Alcoa has benefited the most with several contributors making differences for their programs. I remember a few years back Alcoa had 5 starters on offence and 6 on defense that were county kids, and over half of those kids were WB kids. It's not a shot at Alcoa or Maryville, but it is at WB and Heritage. Until they are able to keep these kids in their programs it will continue to be dismal to average...JMO.

    yep

  9. Great points Govman.

A friend of mine gave me some stats a while back that I thought were interesting .

in 38 years WB has had 142 wins

only 26 of those wins have been against teams that are currently in 6A and almost a third of those wins were against Bearden

of the remaining 116 wins over 38 yrs, 48 have been over three schools Heritage, Karns and Campbell County

If WB weakens its schedule over the next few years, will it help them in the long run?

Good question.  You know the Pat Summit philosophy was always "you get better by playing tough teams."  But for the program at this point, I think a winning culture would do wonders.  And so, it wouldn't hurt to get some "winnable" games on the schedule.  Heritage stepped down a couple of years into 5A and I believe that was certainly one variable in them starting to see some w's.  Next year, they step back up and I would not be surprised if they aren't more competitive, because they've got to "taste a little" what winning feels like. Fair?

  10. Hope it turns out better for them if they make that decision.  For this old dad it has been a four year nightmare....but, it is almost over and we can get on with the rest of our lives.  They say what don't kill you will make you stronger.  I had some of the players over at the house last night and it is sad to see some kids that once loved the game and now are almost to the point that they hate the game.

    Jake,

First of all, I hope you realize how much it has meant to our community that Austin (and mom & dad) did make the decision to keep him at WB.  The same for all those graduating seniors that have stuck with us through thick and thin.  While Austin didn't enjoy as much success on the football field as we would have loved to have seen, I don't suspect that that is going to impede the great successes that he is going to experience as he moves on to the next leg of his journey into adulthood.  He is a quality young man that reflects our school and community well.

I honestly believe that good groundwork is being put down that will result in our football program gaining more respectability in the coming years.  I believe we have an upper tier head coach, who is on his way to building a quality staff.  I also believe we are doing really, really good things at the middle school level--beginning with the leadership--that are going to pay dividends.

I spent a little time today researching the past 38 seasons of WB football to try to find any trends or variables that might explain where we are right now.  It's tough to make any sense out of our past.  Our most successful run was an 11-year period between 1997 & 2007.  During that time we won 66 and lost 57.  We only had one losing season. We made the play-offs 9 out of 11 years.  Locally, we were 11-0 vs Heritage; 5 - 3 vs Alcoa; & 1 - 10 vs Maryville (some things never change).  And so I'm thinking ... coaching stability.  But then I realize, we had five different head coaches (Fickert, McMahan, Reid, Phelps, and Meadows) in those 11 seasons. Hmmmmm .....

By the way--and some of you are thinking I have way too much time on my hands ... in 38 years, Blount has had 11 head coaches.  Two of the 11 won more games than they lost while at WB -- Scott Meadows and Earl McMahan.

It's hard to make any sense out of it sometimes.

  11. I want to believe it as fact, but I'm not buying. I would agree that it doesn't hurt that kids who are used to winning START OUT with greater expectations to win than those who have lost all their games. So with the previous success at least they are starting out with the higher expectations. I may be splitting hairs with you but the seniors at WB did a lot of winning before they got there. I'm not sure the kids' attitude is the biggest problem.

Honest question for Strong X and Jake ... how many members of the 39-1 youth league are playing at WB now? And I really don't know, I'm curious. Did the Govs get the majority of them?

Stars, you're spot on.  Wasn't trying to take away from what Coach Ham has accomplished.  Concerning Nick, I knew he was good (both football and basketball) but quite honestly didn't realize how fast he was till Friday night.  On the long td, he just ran off and left the HV defenders.  And as far as Bubba, not sure who's picking up  his garbage, but his momma cuts my hair ... so look for me to keep it nice, neat, and trimmed regularly for the next few years.

  13. Stars, that's a good point. No question Coach Hammontree has changed the culture at Heritage.  They have also benefitted from dropping down a classification.  Unfortunately, I believe they have to jump back up next year.  From being up in the box on Friday nights, the most encouraging thing to me is the large number of sophomores & juniors who's names I've been calling out a lot.  I know everyone thinks (broken record) but in my opinion, I think it's realistic to think the Govs should be able to possibly win a couple more of these close games next year.  We've added a couple of good coaches this year and that has certainly helped.  The other key, as we all know, will be retaining those middle schoolers.  There's a couple of them that are as good as any I remember coming up in a long, long time.  And all across the board they will help.  We also have a behemouth six grader that I believe is going to be dominant.  They call him Bubba!

Scott West did that video with the "digitally imposed" light saber extending from the top of the upright and it clearly indicated that "the force was not with the young WB kicker." Or maybe it didn't ... who knows? I was on the mic the night of the '99 game.  Never been so happy in the closing minute of a game to announce multiple times, "Hold it fans, there IS a flag on the play.!"
