Hey, Twan', Remember me? - we go back a few years on CoachT. Had some friendly disagreements in the past. My grandson is a freshman on the SC team, so I will be at the game this Friday night (CPA doesn't play). I have always enjoyed your posts, and would like to meet you. If you agree, I will be at the concession stand at halftime wearing a black CPA cap. Look for me and say "hi".

There is good basketball (and always has been) in Memphis, but just because a player does not play in West Tn. does not mean they would not be just as good playing in West Tn.. If I remember correctly, the following players have done pretty well: Brandon Wright, Tyler Smith, Jamont Gordon, Corey Brewer. All from Middle Tennessee. Also, just because Jenkins may not be super quick off the dribble or a great shut down defender doesn't mean he won't be a great college player at Vandy. Sounds like Shaun Foster and Chris Lofton to me - SEC players of the Year. I'd say they did pretty well.

Don't agree with this. Z Mason is a very good basketball player who led CPA to the Elite 8 last year and deservedly was a Mr. Basketball finalist. He competed well against a lot of top quality teams that were as good or better than what Memphis offers in tournaments last year, and his stats were great. Is he a D-1 basketball prospect? Maybe not in power conference, but at some level, yes. Also, he improved dramatically from his Soph. to Jr. year, and I expect he will be better this year. He does play football and plays it very well, but it is not his first love. He wil be hard to handle this year at DE on CPA's football team. What you, I, or others want him to play is not important. That is his decision and if he has a dream and desire to play college BB, more power to him. Too many kids and athletes do what others want them to do, instead of following their dreams. If he is committed to BB, he will do better in that than playing football, if he doesn't love it.

CPA had an off night shooting, and got outrebounded, but remember, GC is a good team with good athletes. Bottom line, CPA found a way to win on an off night. All teams have some off nights, but most won't win when they have them against a good team. Credit CPA for finding a way to win despite shooting woes and losing the rebounding battle. It is easy to criticize Z for lack of rebounds, but what you have to understand is that he is very active contesting shots and helping out on defense. He doesn't just stand under the basket and wait for the rebound. If he did, he would get more rebounds. So, when he contests the shot it opens up the other players to get the rebound, especially if they are quick. I believe CPA has rebounded better and they didn't box out well last night, but I also believe they will "rebound" (play on words) as they are winners and have a good coach.

Yep, CPA's gym is 140 too small for 2A sectional. So, when the TSSAA multipies you they expect you to build a new gym as well, or you get penalized for winning the region /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Yes, CPA (other than Z) did not shoot well. GC did a good job of contesting shots off drives that CPA normally gets wide open looks on. Also, CPA missed 2-3 layups they should have made due to contested shots. Miller missed jumpers he normally makes and was off from the 3 point range. GC also had a couple of possessions where they got 2-3 offensive rebounds which added to the rebound difference. But to win a game when you lose by that large a margin in rebounding shows how well CPA is coached and how hard and smart the players play. When GC went in the zone (correctly) to make CPA shoot and control Z, they still were able to be patient and make hard passes into the post or get good looks. They also played really good pressure defense on the ball which sometimes opens up the offensive rebounding for the other team. Make no mistake, GC is a good team, but CPA is a little better, IMO.

I agree with this point. I admit I am a CPA fan, but I am trying to be impartial in my comments. A lot of teams have a dominant or great player. Look at Station Camp with Jenkins (already signed with Vandy) as an example this year. Even BA when Wright played for them lost to in-state teams as did Giles County when Smith was there. To go undefeated in the state of Tennessee, win District, win District tourney and win Region tourney is very rare. That takes more than a great player because teams with great players have not always done that. It takes great coaching, and that should be recognized. Along the way they had to win some close games (2 in OT), and hold on when Z was off, was sick, or got in foul trouble. My last post on this matter: - Pierce did a great job, was voted by the other coaches, and should be congratulated. However,he was evenly matched with DL, split with them, had a chance to finish 2nd seed in the District, but couldn't win the game he needed at crunch time to do so. IMO, his award would have been more legit if he had finished ahead of DL. - Z is a great player, but the team's accomplishments go beyond that. - Coach Maddux's success this year was very special and should have been recognized with the award. He wasn't, and that is life, so he accepts it and so should CPA fans. - Great musicians don't guarantee a great orchestra - it takes a great conductor.

Great game and atmosphere tonight. CPA held off a very good Giles Cty. team, 51-48. CPA jumped out to an early lead and lead by double digits in the 2nd quarter until GC got hot, hit a couple of threes, CPA got sloppy, and with a basket at the end of the half, CPA led by 6, 30-24. GC came out fast in the 3rd, played a zone and CPA went cold, and finally took a lead briefly before CPA weathered the storm and got the lead back. CPA never trailed in the 4th, GC continued to zone, and CPA held the ball with the lead. A GC reserve hit a 3 with about 20 seconds to go, down by 6, but CPA was able to run out the clock the last few seconds, winning by 3. GC has some good players (#24 and #42 especially), Miller for CPA had an off game shooting, but Z Mason was hard to stop. CPA was smart enough to realize they were off shooting-wise, and worked the ball into Z where he was very effective. I questioned GC benching #24 for 3-4 minutes of the 3rd with 3 fouls as he was keeping GC in the game. Also, they didn't put CPA in the 1-1 soon enough in the 4th to try to get the ball back. Will be interesting to see how they do against Bolivar.

CPA took care of business easily over FRA tonight. The final score was 60-45, but CPA could have easily won by 35-40 if they had kept the starters in. It was 18-4 after the first qtr., and CPA was up by 30+ in the 3rd quarter. They pulled starters, FRA cut it to 21, then CPA extended the lead again, pulled their starters at the beginning of the 4th, with FRA finally getting it to 15 at the end. Mason and Miller were unstoppable. I personally think Miller could have scored 40 if he had wanted to be selfish. FRA just didn't have an answer for him. Kennedy had some great shooting after the game was out of hand, and he probably ended up with 4-5 threes. There is no doubt - he is a great shooter, but too little, too late.

Well said. All of the teams (36) left are capable of having a big night and winning or they wouldn't be where they are. FRA can beat CPA if they are overlooked and play well. Giles County is always good and athletic. Lipscomb took CPA to OT at CPA early in the year without a spread offense, stall or whatever you want to call it. So Region 5 is up for grabs. Gotta make it to the finals to keep playing.

I think it was 83-54, but never close. CPA led 27-7 at the end of the 1st quarter, never led by less than 20, and led by at least 30 the entire 2nd half. CPA shot "lights out". Mason had 35 and didn't play but about 1/2 of the 4th quarter. THis was the best I have seen CPA shoot this year. They picked a good night to play a great game. This pretty much wrapped up the District #1 seed. Way to go, Lions!

Wow! What a basketball genius. I bet Coach Maddox and all of opposing coaches that have to play CPA would pay thousands to sit at your feet and learn the secrets of coaching against CPA and other teams. You make it sound so simple. Why didn't the 17 other coaches who have lost to CPA figure it out? I bet you could even help the NBA coaches solve their problems beating the Cletics. Don't disagree that overall, District 9 is down a bit talentwise apart from CPA. However, CPA has proved in their games outside the district and state they are not just a beneficiary of poor competiton. They have played some tough out-of-district competition and beat all of their in-state opponents, as well as competing well against high rated schools in upper divisions in Ky. and Ga.. IMO, they are a top team, regardless of division, in Middle Tennessee. They will meet some really tough competition in the Sub-State and state if they get there (west Tn. 2A is tough), but they have a shot to win the state if they avoid injuries and play well. Depth continues to be a concern, but they still keep winning even with some injuries. One last thing, about 80% of their scoring comes from underclassmen, so this team will be great next year.

CPA plays 6 of last 8 games at home, including FRA. They have played the hardest part of their schedule already. FRA still has to play CPA on the road and Lipscomb home/away. They lose one and CPA is pretty much a lock as District champs (could even slip up one game and still win the district with only one loss). Don't see CPA losing before the end of the year unless thay have an injury to Z or Miller, or Z gets in early foul trouble in a close game. One thing for sure - Miller and Mason are playing like All-State players this year.

I know common opponent scores don't always tell the whole story, but..... -- WH beat DCA by 5 at WH -- CPA beat DCA by 35 at DCA Based on that, you would have to say CPA is the better team.
