  1. Father Ryan is a well coached team. They have a pretty good, but small, point guard who I thought might have been their best player. They are not very big and really did not have an explosive player. They are however well coached, and while undermanned I thought they played good defense. GCHS was ready tonight. Tyler had a very impressive 20 points in 2 1/2 quarters of play. We have our hands full tomorrow night vs Bradley. The nice thing about this team is they have improved as the season has gone on. They have a brutal Christmas schedule playing 3 games this week ending tomorrow night vs a super Bradley team who should be favored to win. Then we are playing in the Arby's classic in Bristol on the 26th followed up with a game in the tourney on that next Monday. I have heard that both Bradley & White Station are playing in the tourney as well. Tomorrow night should be fun.
  2. 70 something to 40 something. Giles led by around 14 at the half. Smith scored 8 points on 3 dunks and 2 foul shots in the first 1 minute and 20 seconds of the 3rd quarter. Tyler left with 4 minutes to play in the 3rd and the rest of the starters left with 1 minute to play in the 3rd. Tyler's play to start the 2nd half was great. He had 3 steals, 3 dunks, made two free throws. The dunks were impressive, one on about two steps over a very small guard, who fouled him, another coming in awkward from the right, two handed off the wrong foot, all in a span of 1 minute and 20 seconds. The best spurt I have seen him make all season.
  3. Sorry to ruffle your feathers gomab. I thought the post was more about players from TN making the all-tourney team than it was about the mighty Ballerz. Congrats on a great tourney but this whole board is not about your team, nor is every post. If you would read the first post it seems to me that this thread is more about players from TN than the Ballerz. You are right in that Williams averaged 22, sorry for the mistake, but make no bones about it, Tyler was very impressive this weekend. Here are some pretty good Tyler articles and recognition. http://www.volball.com/summer2003/smithspo...light052403.htm http://www.hoopmasters.com/article.php?aid=1053752781 As for be happy there are two you rank so very high, I am, but this is a forum and I think you are wrong in your rankings. Delk has shown he has the potential to be a great prospect, but right now that is all he is, potential. Tyler is already a top level prospect and according to your famous rankings you rank them in terms of their college potential. I respected your rankings up until you pulled this little ranking of the Delks being numbers 1 & 2. As a Division IA scout I would have to rank Tyler 1, Reginald Delk #2, with Prince a close third, but what do I know, I'm not the coach of a powerhouse summer team.
  4. While he did not make all-tourney, Giles County's Tyler Smith was a big buzz word at the tourney. He averaged 22pts, 8 reb and 3 assists for the SE Pump N Run Raptors in the 17u. Tyler is listed has a top rising Junior to be by nearly every big time ranking service. People continue to be blown away by his ability. Tyler says of the schools showing interest he has no clear cut leader but likes Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Duke and North Carolina. All five have shown interest in this young superstar. It is my opinion that he is the best player in the state.
  5. I've been after Gomab enough on Tyler but just so folks will know, Tyler was also one of only 3 Sophomores selected to the Basketball Phenoms Underclassmen All-American Team. He was third team All-American while Louis Williams was 1st Team. Tyler is having a great summer and what impresses me about him is how much work he is putting in to improve his overall game. While Gomab may feel the Delks are better, there is no way he can rank the lesser Delk ahead of Tyler, he simply has not proven he is that great a player while playing 16u for Gomab. Reginald Delk is better than his brother but even while only playing 16u he has not put up the numbers Tyler has this summer. Tyler is starring at the top level on a top 20 summer team. Right now he is the better player of the three, Gomab thinks the Delks have more potential and only time will tell.
  6. Tyler plays for the Pump n Run Southeast Raptors out of Alabama. I do not know how to get their schedule. He is having a great summer from what I understand. His national rankings are going through the roof and he is regarded by many national publications as a top 5-10 player for his class. He is one of only 3 sophomores to make the underclassmen All-American team for Basketball Phenoms and they currently rank him the #2 Player in the class of 2005. If you subscribe there is a good article on him at insidershoops.com. He is going to be a great talent, has all of the tools to be great at the next level!
  7. My top 4 would have to be #1 Tyler Smith #2 Prince #3 Reginald Delk #4 Cromwell Reginald has some great college potential but not quite the same as Smith and Prince.
  8. now if you would just do that for the sophomore class as well. Your two kids are good players with great potential, but Smith is the best player of the three.
  9. They are now rated on nationally, thanks to their AAU basketball coach. According to Phenoms, Cromwell has dropped down to 30th Richard Delk 35 Reginald Delk 17. For what it is worth, the 3rd best player according to Gomab, Tyler Smith is ranked 2nd. No disrespect Gomab, but you should think about updating your top 3 sophomores. To be considered 2nd Nationally by Phenoms is pretty impressive.
  10. during Summer ball. Tyler is NOT a post player. He is projected as a 3 right now, should his perimeter skills improve he could move into the 2 spot. The only way he ever ends up a 4 would be for him to put on about 75 lbs. in the next two years which is probably not going to happen.
  11. and top 3 as a Senior. Only one Delk will crack the top 100 as a Senior. Neither will be mentioned as a junior. Just my opinion.
  12. not play 4 or 5 at the next level. He is absolutely a 3. Smith is going to round out at about 6'7 or 6'8. He is a slasher with amazing body control. He has a 7 foot arm span, combined with about a 38-40 + vertical jump. He has an NBA type body as a 16 year old. Do the math, when he jumps he is touching almost 13 feet. The Delks, no matter how talented they are from the outside, will never have that kind of potential. Gomab has his reasons for ranking the twins over Smith, but the fact remains that every national ranking service in the country will have Smith in their top 20, the Delks will go unranked.
  13. sophomores in the state of TN at least made 3rd team All-West!
  14. Your argument about not seeing the Delks play is getting old. You are not the only person out there that scouts talent. Just curious, do you get paid to scout talent? I have many peers that scout talent at both the college and professional level, and while the Delks are on the radar screen, at this point and time they are only a blip. Reginald is clearly the better of the two, a good shooter with good balance, as for the best scorer in the state, he is not even close. Nothing against Richard but he is not even the 3rd best prospect on your current team. I have told you before, I tip my cap to you for your effort and at one point and time I put some stock into your rankings. When you ranked the Delks above Smith this past time you lost a lot of credibility. The simply fact is that at the top of every recruiter and Scouts list in the state of TN resides two names, and they are listed 1. Smith 2. Brewer
  15. and the word is they are NOT a better prospect at this time. You are about the only one that thinks that way. One of the Delks is not even close to being a top player on your own team. At the end of the summer, Tyler Smith will be top 5-10 nationally on nearly every list, the Delks will probably not even be included in the database. I say again, the Delks are very good players with potential, but they are not on the same level, physically or mentally as Smith. For what it is worth, the two sophomores from Memphis have more potential than both of the Delks.
  16. For his size and athletic ability Whitby was as good as they get in High School. He took his team to the State Championship game by himself. They had one other decent player in the post. Whitby was a great shooter, who played without the 3 point line. Fred Jenkins was a great high school player. Big, strong, fast and could play all 5 positions. Sylvester Gray simply could not be stopped in high school. I wonder what ever happened to him. Billy Holt for Elkton High in the 70's was a great scorer. Murfreesboro Riverdale in the mid 80s had two brothers that played and one of them could light it up from outside. I forget their names but they were fun to watch. This is really a good topic, whoever started it should get a couple of good marks.
  17. Yes, you are right about Coffey. I just remember him being so good at the recreation center as he got older. There were also some great players that played for Elkton High School. Patrick Howard was a very good player. It is all a debate and you could really put him 2nd team or Honarable Mention.
  18. Columbia.... Fred Jenkins, Larry Marks, Eddie Pye, Chris Polk, Pete McBee, Wadele Williams Fayetteville - Quincy Vance Lawrenceburg - Dewayne Snyder, Cedric Wallace, Orlando Crenshaw (only listed because he played middle school ball in Pulaski) Richland - Freddie Gilbert, Herbert Gilbert, Titus Gilbert, Gerald Malone, Johnny Rock! What ever happened to Sylvester Gray for Bolton? Good topic.
  19. Some great players from Giles County High.... 1st Team C - Tyler Smith (Will play 2 or 3 at the next level) PG - Kyle Freeman (Could play with anybody) PF - John Jenkins SF - Joe Dangerfield (Played bigger than his 6'3" frame) SG - Dewayne Horton (Left Handed Slasher) 2nd Team C - Mike Frost (Sister Shelia was great as well) PG - Kevin Perry (Super Slick and great shooter) PF - Rashun Coleman (Great body control) SG - Billy Smith (Great Scorer) SG - Terry Coffey (Strong and Quick) Honarable Mention: Sanderson, Cedric Fletcher, Darryl Gibson, Jake Reynolds, Marks, Fletcher
  20. 5 Freshman in the country reside in the state of TN right now. You also stated earlier in the year that Willie Kemp would be top 5 also. Evidently 3 of the top sophomores in the state since Smith is already one and the Delks are ahead of him. Just curious but what were the stats of both Delks during AAU competition this past weekend.
  21. As usual someone making a post that adds nothing to a debate. You have no idea of my knowledge of high school basketball. I may even be a top level scout for a NBA team. I could even be a past all-american high school player for all you know. If you have something to add to the debate then by all means join in. The type of post you just made adds nothing.
  22. I watched Penny play a lot during his Jr. and Sr. years. He was a great High School player, as good as there has ever been out of TN. You could tell he had what it took, his skills were undeniable, yet he had a long way to go body wise to be a factor at the next level. His body and skills increased and he has gone on to be a great player. I watched Mercer play and what seperated him from everyone else at the time was he had an NBA body while in High School. He was good with the ball and a great finisher. Tony Delk could simply light it up at the high school level. He had as good an outside shot as ever to come through high school. His long arms made him a great defender, and it was evident he would be a long range specialist at the next level with the ability to create his own shots. I did not see Marion play that much. Tyler Smith is 16 years old. What seperates him from everyone else is his total game combined with his NBA type body. Every high school kid that has gone pro has the body for it. Tyler is a legit 6'6 and could potentially grow to 6'9 or 6'10. He has a huge wing span, big hands and a freakish jumping ability. His body control for such a big kid at a young age is unbelievable. His ball handling skill for a kid this big are exceptional, he is not a liability handling the ball. He is a slasher, finisher type player. He has a great presence on the court, the game just seems easy to him. He has a quick first step and is quick on the break. He can lead the break as well as he finishes. For a star player who is as good as he is, he is the most unselfish player on the court. Very seldom does he force anything. His only fault is that he is not the most aggressive player on the court. If he wanted and was allowed, Tyler could sign today as a SO with any of the top programs in the country, the UCLAs, Kentuckys, Arizonas, North Carolinas, Dukes of the world. HE IS ONLY 16! He has a level head, and knowing the family it does not concern me that he might read all the expectations about him. He has a lot to live up to already, and the best things about him is that he is taking full advantage of his God given abilities. His game as a 16 year old sophomore is as good as to ever come through the high school level. Greatest ever is a debate and he has as good a case as any player listed. In 2 years when he is the next Carmello Anthony, or the next can't miss prospect I will have a little better case as best ever. However I will be the first to tell you that a lot can happen in the 2 years it takes to go from 16 to 18. The Delk twins are great prospects, and yes they have good perimeter skills, they are not in the same class, today, as Tyler. Nothing against them Gomab, but you are dead wrong on this one and you know it. I really don't know why you ranked them higher. You had Tyler 1 at the first of the year, and all he did during the season was have better stats, was the best player on the best team in the state. Made every All-State, All-Regional, All-District, State MVP that he could make and all the Delks accomplished was a very good season for a very solid, not exceptional team. They are quite simply not the better players of the three. After this Summer, Tyler will be a five star recruit from all of the services and next season you will not be able to get a seat in the gym for all the College, and yes, NBA scouts.
  23. play, they do not have the game at their current age as Tyler. I'm not trying to slight you in any way. My guess is that neither will start for your AAU team. You simply missed this one, whether on purpose or not in your rankings and because of it you lost credibility. There are college coaches, at the SEC level, that believe he is as good a prospect to ever come through the state of TN, as a sophomore. Ask them if you do not believe me. There are college coaches that believe SHOULD HE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP, he may have a shot going directly to the league. Ask them if you do not believe me. Not saying he will but he simply has abilities as a 16 year old that many have never seen before. If he continues to grow, gets in the 6'10 range, stays injury free, he has the game, the body and the attitude to make the jump. Whether he gets the big head or not remains to be seen, but quite simply he is the most talented sophomore to ever, and yes I said ever, grace the hardwoods in Tennessee.
  24. All-State selection don't give me honorable mention. That does not qualify. Not only did they not make All-State, they did not make it in the Writers Association for each classification. The Delks have potential to be very good players, and one of them may very well get an SEC type scholarship. Let me rephrase, they are good players now and one of them will indeed get an SEC scholarship, but neither will be offered by a powerhouse program. The only shot they have at a powerhouse is Kentucky for obvious reasons, and should one of them end up a Wildcat it will suprise me to see him get any court time while he is there. I hope I am wrong and each Delk kid goes on to greater things, but simply put, they do not have the same potential as the Smith kid.
  25. they have potential. A pretty good amount of it as well. Tyler Smith has more than potential as a sophomore. He is ready to play college basketball tomorrow. It is your ranking, your opinion, but as a prospect today, status quo, Tyler Smith is head and shoulders above the Delks. You keep referencing past players and also Brewer who is a SR to be, well we are talking about ranking the sophomores. Today, as prospects, the Delks are not considered by Div I major powers (North Carolina, Duke, Arizona, etc.), they may be next season but not right now. Not only is Tyler expected to play for a major program, many college coaches believe that should he continue to develop he may have an opportunity to go straight to the league. He is not there yet but that is his potential. As far as the other players you continue to mention, none had any where close to the game Tyler has when they were 16 years old. But as I said earlier, I appreciate the time you put into ranking players, you missed this one. It is my opinion that you did so because of all the publicity Tyler has brought to this site and for whatever reason you feel the need to put this kid down as much as you can. He is not your favorite player in the state and that is fine with me. The majority of the board realize that you missed this one and it is my opinion that it has hurt your credibility when ranking players.
