Maxx, I,m sure you taught Freak(who I love as much as any former player) a lot about ball, but you should remember that he only played 1yr of jr high(led team to dist. championship and was tourney MVP). So yes he has a lot to learn as do all freshman and soph.
OHBallin, If you played at Oneida I,m sorry that you were diaappointed in your progress.
Now for my take on a basketball career, when you play jr pro you should learn simple things like how to use either hand when dribbling, how to hold ball properly when shooting, how to make good passes, pivots, rules of the game,d-stance and how to slide feet, how to play team D, how to trust your teammates, and I think you should learn about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
In jr high you continue to become better ball handlers through tougher drills, you learn even more about team offense and working the ball around, you learn how to play man-D, play help side, draw charges, you learn more advanced offenses(but not to advanced) clock management, how to set screens on offense, how to hedge or fight through or over screens on D. If you have a post player who can finish well you start teaching more advanced moves, but if he only shoots about 30% under the rim you better keep it simple until that % goes up.
When a player reaches high school you have weeded out a lot of players so you have more time to spend 1 on 1 with players(and lets face it if your the high school coach you better know more than the jr coach or they shouldn,t have hired you). Offenses get more advanved so you need to spend even more time on screens, how to use screens, when to spin and shoot or kick out for the 3. Team D is a must no matter what you play man or zone.
Most important , keep a positive attitude, kids are not the same as they used to be, they have too many others things they could be doing, so allow a little fun into your pactice regularly.
Almost forgot, If you can put the ball in the hole and play some D I don't care if your hair hangs to your butt!
Coach K you are doing a great job, just stay after it.THis is the last I will say unless I am provoked.
