I saw Dresden posted last week they had an opening. Any one have any word on that?

Obion Co announced Byron Freeman today.

I’ve coached for 16 years at middle and high school levels. It’s harder to teach kids to run a slower, methodical offense that waits for a high quality shot than it is to run something in a short second situation that only forces up a shot because if you don’t the clock turns the ball over. One of the best girls basketball coaches in West Tennessee played what would be considered “stall ball” by some peoples standards. To say he’s a coward or less of a coach because of it is preposterous. He’s got 3 gold balls and has forgotten more about basketball than most will ever know. There’s a thread on this every year. A team holds the ball (not actually running offense) and it’s because the defense sits back and lets them. Go out and guard. Don’t depend on the clock to get the ball back for you. Very few teams actually run stall ball. The game is played faster today than it ever has been. It’s only a problem when the ball gets put on the hip but there’s two sides to every coin. As for taking the air out of the ball when you’re up late: if team A is up and can keep team B from getting the ball for minutes at a time, who is actually the better team? A shot clock is coming in Tennessee, it’s a matter of time. BCAT is pushing for it. I don’t care for it but it is what it is.

Big city/metro 1A schools are not as well supported as rural 1A schools. You’ll have some in 2A-4A but for the most part the TSSAA doesn’t stuff the pocket book in games like today’s 1A championship.

knightsfan, Kudos to the people at Hume Fogg for doing things the right way. That is very admirable this day and age and I’m sure they don’t deserve to be lumped into schools that purposely cheat. But….. Just like 20 years ago, the wrong coaches and administrators at certain private schools exploited a system that was put in place. There were private schools that did things the right way. And because of the ones that didn’t, we got the multiplier and eventually all privates in D2. The system is there for schools who have an application/lottery and it’s being exploited.
-
I thought the same thing.
-
1) Both have an application process and a lottery in place to admit students. Public schools do not. 2) While it was created for the purpose of being an academically superior school, it became a magnet in 1983 and has been telling students of Nashville that they can not attend since that point. I can name a lot of schools that were created at the same time that haven’t been telling the students in their communities that they can not attend. One of these is not like the other. I didn’t say any school was created for athletic reasons.
-
And to your point about being competitive in other sports, this isn’t just an issue for boys basketball. A charter school won 1A in football this year. If you have an application process to get into the school, you aren’t a public school.
-
“it’s just very clear that the school is built for academics and college prep, and not athletics.” I’m almost certain Chatt Prep was established with academics and college prep in mind as well. “Any student in Davidson county can go to any school of their choosing, unless it’s a magnet school that has academic requirements.” Definitely not controlling enrollment.
-
So in short, their enrollment is controlled. Little Jimmys family moves into whatever county and walks into to whatever public school, there are very few extenuating circumstances that would keep Little Jimmy from being allowed to enroll in that school. “Real public schools” only reason for saying no is residential requirements. At my school we were able to deny a student once and he was placed in our county’s online school because he had a felony charge on him at the time. Other than stuff like that, we have to take them. I don’t buy the lottery stuff. I’ll give an example that Trader also hit on. In Jackson, Madison Academic Magnet started in 2003. They were immediately a strong 1A girls basketball in the west and in 06, 09, and 13 they made the state tournament. The other 3 public schools in Jackson were dreadful during that time. Like not even being able to dribble bad. Some how, all the good girls basketball players ended up getting accepted in the lottery to go to Madison. At the time with 3 classes, they were able to stay 1A because in their charter they are only allowed to have 475 students. At that time if you were under 500 students you were almost guaranteed to be 1A and one of the largest. To me that is the biggest advantage of them all.
-
So what you’re saying is, if a kid moves in across the street from one of those schools, they can say no you can’t go here?
-
My only guess is because they are considered public because they receive public funds directly from their LEA.
-
Right, would thin out Division 1 for sure. If I get bored I might research how many charters/magnets are in TSSAA.
-
Yep, charter school all the way. Schools that can control their enrollment should not be in Division 1.
-
2 charter schools playing in the 1A State championship tomorrow in case anyone was wondering what the formula is for winning 1A these days.
-
Also your generalizations like "I guarantee that you can find a scandal on every school in the state" make it worse. If you're going to make statements like that, back it up since its a "guarantee".
-
You have moved the goalpost on every argument you have tried to use to justify Prep. Literally no one on here is saying the Prep kids need to be punished. That's something you have made up.
-
Memphis actually has enough schools to have its own region in 1A. 14 schools, with mostly being............... charter schools.
-
I guess I should have also included in my question what it was vacated for. That was because of residency issues. Have yet to see one that was vacated for the school's academics being sham.
-
Thanks for that. Now to my point. TSSAA stays out of academics for the most part. If you’re accredited by your LEA, they say you’re legit. Prep currently is. I don’t see them taking anything from them. If they’ve taken a championship away from a team because of being closed down due to academics, I’ll wait for someone to prove me wrong and gladly acknowledge it. Temple is still listed as having 3 state championships in basketball. No asteriks. I would be the first to come on here and say something about it because I have a silver ball from 2003 as a player because of them. If Prep closes because of academics, and they take away their championships, ill be the first on here praising it because I have a silver ball from 2024 as an assistant coach because of them.
-
Ok I researched that one and found it. Definitely states vacated on there and has Bearden listed as championship. Now my next question, was it not vacated because of recruiting?
-
I don’t think anyone on here has blamed the kids, even though one poster keeps saying that’s the case. As usual it’s the adults fault and the kids suffer because of it. Is it fair? Probably not. But if you want fair in life, wait until September and I’ll show you where some good ones around where I live.
-
Can you give an example?
-
Does the TSSAA vacate championships like the NCAA?
