I just want to say that I am surprised and thrilled to see Rhea Co. step it up this year, and congrads to their first year coach.
  2. Ought to be a dynamite district tournament. I'd like to see an unbiased accounting of the games. When/Where does this district start play?
  3. Too soon to tell PureFP. I'll get back with you on May 21st... By the way, in what poll is Goodpasture ranked number 1 in the state?
  4. Great Post. Belongs at the top.
  5. I haven't participated in any of these "best of" position threads, but like readng them. Being a former HS catcher, I just can't stand not giving my informed opinion on this. Ginny "Gunner" Swearengen of the Cumberland Co. Lady Jets (soon to be UT-Martin) is the best defensive catcher currently playing for any HS team in Tennessee. She is by far better than any catcher I have seen at any tournament or at any high school game, and has been the best since last year. She makes the Lady Jets pitchers look great. Coaches defense, calls a great pitching game, rock soild frame jobs, and got the hops. She can have bad days, but I'll take her even on her bad days. And this year she's got some pop in the bat as well. None, nada, nary, as in zero stolen bases on her since last year when she gave up 2. (just for you YWNK ) Frozen ropes to all bases. She is the best HS catcher I have ever seen play HS ball, and we play the best the state has to offer. All of the catchers listed on here are good. But the thread said best. That would be Gunner. (Hope she doesn't read this!)

I have been told you can go through Dickson and it might be the same length of time, although the directions I'll give are the easiest. Also, the hotels are at this exit. Let me try to give it a shot... If coming from the east..... Take I-40 West to Exit 143, which is Highway 92 Linden - Waverly Exit. At the top of the ramp, turn right (North). You will go about 15 miles into Waverly. Once in town, it gets a little tricky. Turn North onto Hwy 13. This part jogs back and forth, but STAY ON HWY 13. Once you cross US Hwy 70 and the river bridge, you will go about 1 mile. Turn Right onto Powers Blvd. There will be a sign there that points you towards the airport and the ballpark. You will go about 1/2 mile on Powers Blvd. Turn Left onto Airport Road. The ballpark is at the end of Airport Road. Hope this helps.

Nope. The tournament is not being held at the high school. And, if you go through Dickson via Hwy 70, it will take you about 45 minutes longer if you live south of I-40 or east of Dickson. See hyperlinked map in previous post. If you don't follow that map, you will get lost. The fields are well north of Waverly off of the beaten path. We played there back in 1999. Good fields, just hard to find. Closest hotels are at the interstate, about 35 minutes away.
  9. On this site, you can look up win/loss rankings, but it is only as accurate as the teams who input the scores. You can also look up strength + schedule rankings. This one seems to be the most accurate, but again, depends upon the team who input them. Each of the 4 big cities has their own ranking. Like last night #3 Riverdale versus #1 Goodpasture, but those rankings are done by the Tennessean and are only applicable to the Nashville area. On the MTSCA web site, they have ranked teams based upon a coaches poll, but the area covered only goes over to the eastern time zone and updated only a few times. The simple answer to your question is there is no state softball ranking system and no tracking of win loss records at the state level.
  10. This was the first time Cumb. has ever been thought of for any type of all-state all-star anything. Chatt. never recognizes us in any of their papers. I guess our sucess of recent years is getting us noticed, or at least included in Chatt.? We are in the middle of media nowhere. Knoxville has an all-east TN team. Nashville has an all-TN team (although it only applies to Nashville area). Memphis has one too. Chattanooga has the one listed. I kind of like it like that, but I know the girls would like some recognition. And, as long as it is limited to seniors, I guess it will be ok. The mid-TN coaches association is accepting any team from across the state as members and plans on playing KY as the Mid-TN all-star team, (deemed noth vs south), with the players being nominated this week for inclusion. What pitcher are you talking about? Is your team a member of the MTSCA?
  11. Been following y'all. My daughter and Gretchen used to go at it in travelball. Lots of tie-breakers. Best of luck in the post season.
  12. It 2003, Maryville had 6 runs in their last 5 ball games, and 3 of those came against Dobbins-Bennett, and yet, they were competative all the way to the state. Sounds like the coach did his job to me. Sounds like his team is still playing some sound defence. Defence is played as much with the mind as with the body, and that can be coached. In the history of the game, a coach has never scored a single run. It is the players who score runs. Batting is one of the few individual skills that players have to take on themselves. A coach can try to manufacturer runs, but that should only be attempted in desperation. That is not how the games are won consistantly. Someone has to hit, and it usually has to happen twice in one inning. In my few observations of Knox teams this year (Halls, Farragut, Gibbs), it appears they are all playing better defense. If that is true, then batting becomes even more important, cause banking on the opposition giving you runs just ain't happening. In 2002, it appears Maryville was hitting the ball, all the way through the post season. Beating Soddy 3-0 against a very good Ashley Frizzell and Racheal Harris is amazing. As far as the championship went, I have never seen a state championship final score as high as 2002. I would think comparing 2004's team to that team (rather than last year's team) might give you some indication as to why Maryville isn't dominating their district this year. By the way, before you crucify the coach, wouldn't it be better to see how they do in the post season, when it really matters?
  13. Dang, no respect. C U M B E R L A N D I'll make sure the coach knows about it. Thanks.

That's a wild format. Bummer that Lawrence Co. has the chance at losing the opportunity to host and the gate money though. District host gets to keep the money but pays umps right?

You all play at Lawrence Co. HS this year. http://www.tssaa.org/schdir/tournaments/to...irls%20Softball District 8AAA Coffee Co. Central High School (Manchester) Columbia Central High School (Columbia) Franklin Co. High School (Winchester) Lawrence Co. High School (Lawrenceburg) Lincoln Co. High School (Fayetteville) Shelbyville Central High School (Shelbyville) Tullahoma High School (Tullahoma) Just guessing, but I think it is double elimination based upon the comments section and the fact that it is a 7 team district , with the highest seed getting a first round bye. Appears to start May 5th (that is early for it to be anything but a double elimination tournament). How about Coffee Co. faithful. What it is scoop on y'alls district?

As far as dates go, every district I have see is either starting on May 7th or May 10th (depending upon district size). District 5 AAA starts May 10th at Rhea Co. HS. Our format (5 team district) is the 2 teams with the worst record play, with the loser going home and and winner becoming the 4th seed in a double elimination tournament. The only dates set in absolute stone are the state finals, although the tssaa mandates maximum dates for regional semis and finals and sectionals. Copied from tssaa at http://www.tssaa.org/Sports/Softball/Divis...ionI/rguide.htm Regional Softball semi-finals will be May 17 and finals May 19. The sectional games will be Friday, May 21. Schools may mutually agree to play regional semi-finals, regional finals, or sectionals earlier than the scheduled date. The sectional winners shall advance to the central tournament site, May 25-29, at the Greenbrook Softball Complex, Southaven, MS. What does all of this mean? Someone from your district will have to supply details. What district are you in?
  18. Building yourself up is fine, but why get on here? Let your play speak for itself!
  19. Guru... thanks for the update. Anyone got the low down on Cumberland games? Especially Friday? Gotta make work schedule and plans to get there........... If you would rather not post it, then just PM me on here. Thanks!
  20. Anyone know pools, fields, teams yet? I know our pool (thanks Guru and good working with ya on the Cookeville field ) but would like to see complete list. Thanks in advance.

Good thread so far. std has kept me out of trouble before.... I am sure he is trying to do so now. To Leigh14: I am not taking sides in this, and wasn't even applyng to any particular situation. I was talking about my situation and my regrets for allowing my coach to run me off. To ggsos: You are correct about self-confidence. But the regret remains. It is never a good situation to have to deal with someone you don't like, especially when they are in charge. However, even if you own your own business, it is just like Bob Dylan said, "you gotta serve somebody". There is no one who has so much power that they are not held accountable to someone, and that someone may be a a complete jerk. To flngrvy: Not related to this discussion, but I happen to agree about travel ball. That is where the exposure is. So long as a kid has good grades, I don't think coaches care about HS performance. Travel ball is much more competative, and the college coaches know it. Even at the Worth tournament, as fine a HS tournament as it was, there were only a couple of local JC coaches there that I saw.
  22. Cumberland Co. 6 Lincoln Co. 0 Cumberland Co. 1 Marion Co. 0 (Drop in Game) Cumberland Co. 1 Halls 0 Then, 7 players left for the Prom, including 5 starters, a Cookeville Tournament tradition For Cumberland Co. Made it to the finals last year even after the upperclassmen left, and could do it again this year, despite never playing with this roster. GO LADY JETS UNDERCLASSMEN!!!!!!!!!!!! Time to shine! Last pool game Cumberland Co. 4 Collierville 5 extra innings Play again at 1:30, but don't know who. Know that Halls beat Collierville 3 to 1 and Collierville beat Lincoln 1 to 0. Also know that Cumberland is seeded 2nd in their pool and play again at 1:30.
