  1. District what? Perhaps it may feature teams in a particular district, but it's preseason and none of this counts.
  2. I agree 100%. As I stated last year, watch the twins from Heritage MS. The Perilli Terror is back, this time there's two of 'em. (Remember: big sis Emily is at Virginia on a full ride) Grace and Tess Perilli are a pair you better watch out for. They are only freshmen, but these girls had beautiful jump serves in 7th grade. I can say that because I saw it myself. Grace was jumping up and making very hard kills over the weekend. Look out for the Perilli Terror!
  3. Great reporting, PageMan! I was impressed with Independence and Siegel (and of course, the 'wood) yesterday. Thanks for great detail and passion for the game!
  4. Brilliant post, ComPassion! I think if you excite the people enough via radio, we can get them in the door to see the games in person. Thank you, RadioJet, for wanting to share volleyball with the world (starting with Cumberland County)!
  5. For anyone who read the posts by Jeff in the last few weeks, this shouldn't be a big suprise. I had kind of figured, but wasn't sure. According to Brentwood's schedule (via brentwoodvolleyball.com), Jeff Frazier has returned as assistant coach. Congratulations!
  6. It was a GREAT final last year at the Page Classic. I've enjoyed the Classic for the last 3 years or so now... always well run and the folks are great. I hope to be involved again one way or another. Maybe I'll work with digs again... or better yet, boss him around from the chair!
  7. Should be taken care of soon. I contacted CoachT (I don't have ability to fix schedules, though it would be nice!) and you should be able to put new info into the system soon. Thanks for alerting me, ghost!
  8. Nice piece from NCP. Kudos again to NCP for outstanding coverage on volleyball! Link
  9. Is this the same Ann McPherson who played at Martin Methodist?
  10. Figuratively speaking, a lot of newspaper people can't even spell 'volleyball', much less report on it. That being said, I echo some names already said. Nashville City Paper does a good job, as does the Chattanooga paper. Honorable mention to Memphis Appeal. Jeff Lockridge at the Tennesseean does an acceptable job. I don't know where the guy was from, but there was a guy at the TACA all star match that told me he'd never even SEEN volleyball before. How is he supposed to report effectively, you ask? No joke, we sent him to PageMan!
  11. I'm all for men's volleyball in the state. By virtue of what I do, I am compelled to say this: If we ever get men's volleyball, I would practically beg TSSAA to put guys volleyball in either the winter or spring. We are absolutely OVERWHELMED as officials with trying to meet demand. Nashville has 180+ schools and a touch under 80 working officials to fill the gap. There are certain days of the week where everybody seems to want to have their match. We simply do not have the manpower (much less quality manpower) to meet demand for men's volleyball on top of already high demand of officials in the fall. Food for thought, from a practical logistical standpoint.
  12. You can thank ghost for this one. Does volleyball receive a fair proportion of sports money? Are some teams fundraising for everything they get? Havings parents pay for it? Does the school pay for it? Does the Booster Club pick it up? And is the BC using money from other sports (read: football money) to subsidize volleyball? What's your experience?
  13. Well said. Very well said. I've seen plenty (one is too many) of schools where girls sports get zero respect. I'm aware of one instance where the baseball field got fenced and the guys got several helpful practice items, while the girls had no outfield fence for two or three years. And the girls had to fundraise for a pitching machine. The guys had theirs bought by the school. You can see it in the coaching too. Football takes great care in selecting a leader, while with volleyball, new teachers are "contracted" into taking the position. I'm aware of one such teacher who just got put into the volleyball coaching job, and this person has barely ever seen a match played. Fortunately they have a good assistant coming in to help. The point is, play4keeps is absolutely right. Without Title IX, a lot of opportunities for girls sports not just in this state, but across the country, still wouldn't be realized.
  14. Pure and simple, it won't happen. Why? In most areas, football dominates fall. Women's volleyball barely gets any respect as it is, so why would men's volleyball get as much or more? Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see volleyball expand. Men's HS volleyball is strong in two regions of the country- the Northeast and the West. Guess what sport doesn't dominate the Northeast and West, but dominates the South? You guessed it- football.
  15. It's official folks. Harpeth Hall has a new head coach. Her name is Valorie Baker and she hails from Wake Forest University. I personally am suprised at her prior position- head coach of the NCAA program. How HH got her is amazing, but congratulations nonetheless to HH and the girls who play for HH. It would seem that they have a great find and a very competent person to lead their program! To my friend who helped me out, please e-mail me from a different account. I can't reply to you at your current address.
  16. I didn't know this until last night! Jackie Ramsdale, of D-B fame, is going to play for UT-Knoxville.
  17. Katie Brush, USJ - MTSU Ashley Asberry, Oakland - MTSU Apparently Asberry has slipped under the radar. I hope someone has seen her in action and can comment. I've never heard the name.
  18. Yellow card! This isn't softball, this is volleyball! Alright, ComPassion, you have my permission to brag. Do share with us who from Chattanooga (and the surrounding area) made it. After all, you gotta get your money's worth from a yellow card.
  19. Do share all you know of! Jessica Turner, Brentwood - Lipscomb Ann Mullins (Father Ryan '03) - Transferring from UT to Lipscomb Lara Newberry, Baylor - UT Chattanooga Katie Arvidson, Page - Florida Atlantic Natalee Staggs, Collierville - UT Martin Nici Steckel, Father Ryan - West Alabama
  20. I think this will be interesting, to say the least. I want to know what all you die-hards think. If you were in an official's shoes, what do you think they like most (and also dislike) about their job? Make it as far flung and comprehensive, or simple, as you like. I want to see how people perceive us as a group. I'm gonna sit back, watch, laugh sometimes, and try not to say anything (except comments in passing). After I see a whopper or two, I'll chime in with reality. What do YOU think the pros and cons of officiating are?
  21. Glad to have you back in the fall, Digs. No idea who will/won't be there, perhaps Cowboys Up can give you a hand there. I enjoyed your team last year and hope to make it back to the Classic this fall.
  22. The pre-season goodies: August 19-20..Brentwood playdate August 20..Blackman playdate Among all the names I can think of (but without dates, yet!)... Brentwood Blastoff (aka Music City Invitational?) Choo-Choo Harpeth Hall Classic Father Ryan Invitational Mt Juliet/Wilson Central tournament Chick-Fil-A Invitational (usually small privates) Blackman Invitational Glencliff Invitational River City Classic (Barlett) Maverick Roundup (AC!!) Page Classic (mentioned already) LaVergne Tournament of Champions (thanks bd4vols!) Franklin Invitational ...and many, many, MANY more! Volleyball season is slightly more than 11 weeks away. It's going to be another GREAT year!! My favorite 2 months out of the year. I. Love. This. Game.
  23. According to Harpeth Hall's website, Harpeth Hall standout Taylor Parrish has verbally committed to play for Virginia Tech in the fall of 2006. This coming season will be Taylor's senior year at HH. Please congratulate her whenever you see her. She is not only an outstanding player, but from personal experience, I know she's one of the most genuine and kind people I've EVER run into on the volleyball court. Congratulations, Taylor! I'll be sure to congratulate you in person too.
