Leadership, soft hands, ability to read the batters, quick release is often better than a strong arm But the combination is a great one to have both. a good catcher can also read his picther to let him know if he's not staying on top of the curve or if the slider isn't biting that day. A good catcher is the field general, the only player on the field who has an unobstructed view of the whole defensive unit. I could go on but I think that the whole world has their own opinion. I caught for 18 years from little league through college and beyond. Never made it stick with a big club but gave it a shot. Now my knees ache daily, my arm feels like rubber, but I wouldn't have traded it for anything else in the world. A cathcer has to love the position or he will not succeed. A good firstbase man can catch because of his quick hands on picking the ball but he is a backstop not a catcher.
