  1. Could raider2 be a former Meigs player during their title run in the 90's who now coaches high school ball in AAA?
  2. Look. You didn't say anything about not knowing the personnel. You said that you weren't aware of them strength training and that you were very close to the program. I've been a TSSAA approved and McMinn County Board of Education authorized volunteer strength and conditioning coach since April of 2007. We work out 2-3 days a week when allowed by the TSSAA calendar for basketball. We alter the lifting schedule during the season. If you were so close, you would have known these things. You've just got an axe to grind against Coach Morgan and Central for some reason.
  3. You obviously aren't as close as you think you are to the program. I've served as their strength coach since April of 2007.
  4. Being outshot by almost 20 at the free throw line didn't help us any last year against Marshall County. Anything can happen from the substate on. Hume-Fogg took down Marshall County tonight, and I'd bet very few people saw that coming. One game at a time....
  5. I don't know the final score, but Meigs' coach texted a friend of our assistant coach to tell him that they'd beaten Sequatchie. Wow!! An all District 5AA Region 3AA semifinals.
  6. dadi, I've got to get up early for work. Text me tomorrow morning with the Sequatchie/Meigs final. Thanks Gabby is really cranking it up.
  7. Our girls and boys had to play quarters and semis of the district tourney while overcoming a stomach virus. My sympathies.
  8. Good practice today. Girls are hungry and determined. How about that body slam by McNutt last night! /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" />
  9. There are a couple of Polk "allies" that are students at Central who did a great job of getting Central fired up for their last contest. I'd say that it will happen again at school tomorrow. I think it will be another hard-fought contest between two programs that have a long history.
  10. I generally do either giant sets of three to four exercises back-to-back-to-back with minimal rest in between. I usually will pair a leg exercise with a front or push muscle group and then a back or pull muscle group. I only go heavy (6 rep max) in the summer. I usually train in the 8-10 rep range in preseason and then in the 12 range during the season. I work plyometrics (mostly jumping and bounding) in with some supersets or at the end of a weight training session. As far as conditioning goes, I do a lot of minimal rest work in the weightroom which is also beneficial cardiovascularly. I prefer sprints, and quick change of direction work with regards to conditioning. Like I said, intensity over duration works best for most sports with the exception of some track events. A lot of recent studies indicate that interval training consisting of short, high intensity bursts followed by a rest or low intensity period twice as long as the high intensity period is better at cutting fat while maintaining muscle.
  11. Because I am a volunteer assistant at McMinn Central and serve as strength and conditioning coach, I must adhere to TSSAA guidelines with regard to strength program. One of the guidelines is that any strength and conditioning program MUST NOT be sports specific. It must be a program that can benefit any student who should undertake the endeavor. As a result, I don't do any drills that use basketballs except during the season. Offseason workouts don't involve the use of a basketball. My workouts never last more than an hour, but there a few breaks in action. Most rest periods are 30-45 seconds. I use a lot of supersets and giant sets to maintain intensity and get a lot of work done in a minimal amount of time. I look for intensity and efficiency rather than quantity. I prefer total body training unless an athlete has a specific deficiency that needs extra attention. I don't feel comfortable getting any more specific than that. If you are in the McMinn County area, I will be helping McMinn Central girls' assistant Joe Young and possibly former Meigs girls' head coach Jason Powell with the Triple Threat camp this summer. Some of the stuff I do in the offseason will be featured on Tuesday and Wednesday of each camp session. As of yesterday, the camp will be held at McMinn Central high school this year. It usually coincides with the TSSAA dead period the last week of June and first week of July.
  12. Central didn't lose last year to Brainerd. They lost TWO years ago to Brainerd at Brainerd. They haven't lost in the district for two consecutive seasons. I think Central was able to get the press rolling against Polk in their second meeting. (It's been tweaked a bit.) That led to a lot of turnovers by Polk. It also led to second half fatigue which resulted in missed FTs. I will not say that Central should win it all, because I haven't seen everyone in the state play. They should be able to make it to substate. After that, anything can happen. We've been down this road too many times to ever say we SHOULD win it all. I like our chances, but it certainly isn't inevitable.
  13. Athletes can definitely over-train. I incorporate short duration, but highly intense workout methods with respect to both weight training and conditioning. I am involved with Chargerette basketball, so I feel that it best fits our style of play, and it best mimics the game of basketball in general. After all, basketball is primarily a series of short bursts of intense activity (at least in MC's style of play.) With respect to your question, several consecutive days of extremely intense training will not give the athlete's body an opportunity to repair itself. At the basic level, training tears down muscle. Overtraining doesn't allow the body to recover and as a result, get stronger, quicker, more durable, etc.
  14. Meigs is definitely improving. Mincey is doing a great job there. I've heard that Coach Powell is doing much better with his health as well.
  15. Defense regressed a bit tonight against Boyd. We gave up 30 in the first half. Boyd had made a good adjustment to our pressure since the last time we played them. We adjusted to that and held them to 12 in the second half. I chalk a little bit of that up to Polk County "hangover". Judging by the scoreboard, Polk had a Central "hangover" as well because they lost at Meigs by 10 tonight.
  16. I expect a tough game, but there are a couple of players contributing now that weren't when they played at Polk. Jenna hadn't gotten comfortable yet, and she didn't understand her role. Madison Lee was out with injury. The last couple of practices have been good, and we had a spirited workout today in the weightroom. I think we're over the midseason slump (it happens every year), and we're preparing for the homestretch. This team is more talented than last year's because of the addition of Adams and the increased production of Laura Purkey (two things we didn't have last year). With that said, anything can happen in region, substate, and state. I hope they can go all the way this year. This really is a great group of girls who work their butts off.
  17. The last I heard is we would stay in current classification for sure in basketball, baseball, and football. I'm not sure about the other sports. BTW, I need to clarify my previous post concerning her commitment. This is a verbal commitment. She will not be able to sign a letter of intent until the early signing period starts in November. Neither Kylie nor UTC is currently bound to this commitment although after speaking to both Kylie and Coach Moore, I feel very good about each party honoring the agreement.
  18. Kylie called Coach Moore on Monday and gave him her commitment to sign with them in the early signing period this fall. She took an unofficial visit there this past weekend.
  19. Where can I find the AA all tournament team and the tournament MVP?
  20. Thanks for the kind words. I do strength, conditioning, and speed work with the girls, and they are truly a joy to work with. Coach Morgan and Coach Young are really classy guys, and they, too, are great to work with. This past season was our first ever with an official strength program in place, and Coach Morgan (who's been here for 30 years) gave me a lot of latitude in designing the program. What do you think about the possible replacements for your three seniors for next season? I saw that you've still got three very good players (24, 22, and 33) returning. You guys will probably be going very deep into the postseason next year provided you can adequately replace 11, 12, and 21. Next year is a big year for us. We'll have six seniors who've been to the 'boro twice, and who were very hungry this year. I just hope they don't put too much pressure on themselves.
  21. Dang! I was hoping she was a senior!! She was a one-woman wrecking crew for the most part. However, that three by #12 was the dagger. Good luck tonight against Milan. If I'm not mistaken, most of our losses at the 'boro have been to the eventual state champion. For y'all's sake, maybe history will repeat itself.
  22. Keep your heads up, ladies. You juniors have done some things that had never been done in school history (3 straight district tourney championships). You also have the opportunity to do something that has never been done in school history (win 4 straight region crowns). Finally, you've finished among the top 4 AA teams in the state. That's something 107 other teams in AA couldn't say. We've got no one graduating, and there are some rising sophomores who could add to an already strong bench. After one more offseason of weights, running, agilities, and practice we'll have a great opportunity to make it back to the 'boro. Go Big Blue! Go McMinn Central!
  23. Marshall County attempted 26 free throws to 3 for McMinn Central. Fouls-Marshall County-9 McMinn Central-20 (admittedly 3 of those were to stop the clock in the last minute). With that said, McMinn Central still had numerous missed opportunities as we shot under 40% for the game and missed a lot of open looks. Marshall County made the plays at the end, and McMinn Central didn't. Congrats to Marshall County. Good luck tonight against Milan. BTW, where is March going to college?
  24. I think guncle was poking fun at the York posters who claimed we bought our 21 point victory over them.
