First things first, I am a Rockwood fan and attend the state tournament. However, certain issues need to be resolved around the game or as it will later be called “the coaching bust.” Rockwood’s seniors started the game anxious and still were able to hang with the great shooting of CPA. The team used Davis early in the opening minutes of the game and would later forget he was a part of the team. It seemed that the team didn’t bring the defensive game to Murfreesboro with them. By late in the first quarter, CPA went on a little run, and I thought to myself that this was an appropriate time for the coach to call a 30 sec. timeout. Also, I noticed that we were not playing the same way that they had to get to the state tournament. We were rotating players differently with substitutions, one player after another. In the second quarter, things just got worse for Rockwood. CPA’s quickness was a great factor in this, but from a fan’s point of view, Rockwood had MORE TEAM TALENT in Davis, Allen, Richardson, Payne, Pryor, Reed, Bowman, etc… than CPA. Late in the second quarter, I witness the WORST coaching move in all of Rockwood basketball’s history and may go down as the worst ever. Down 9 points with 2:47 to play, the coach placed the team in a 2-3 zone. CPA then held the ball at half court and the lead until under 7 sec to play in the half when Travis S. stuck the “dragger in the heart” to Rockwood, and CPA went in the half up 36-24. I noticed the coach was under heavy criticism from the fans during this period. The second half was “downhill” for Rockwood with CPA shooting over 62% for the game. Rockwood only scored 6 pts over 12 mins and the coach refused to call a timeout to stop CPA’s momentum, maybe a pride issue for him or was he waiting on a T.V. timeout? During the half, CPA led by as many as 27 pts, and they would later demolish Rockwood, 63-41. Finally, congratulations to CPA’s head coach for out coaching Rockwood’s coach. And to the Seniors, (Davis, Richardson, Allen, Bowman, Pryor, and Reed) it was great to see you guys play over the last four years to make your last game in the state tournament, and wish the best luck to all of you in all that you may do.
