  1. And comments like that is why an arguement like this never gets resolved. I do agree that most fans are probably not aware of most of the rules but I wouldn't go so far as to say tha ALL of us don't. I'm not even saying that I know every one myself. Plus, ref usually have a better vantage point than we do. In calling games, if a ref makes call I don't understand that's exactly what I say( and then I try to find out after the game if I can) Case in point, a few weeks ago Bartlett was playing Cordova and twice the ref called what I thought was a charge against Bartlett and they shot free thows both times( as Cordova was in the bonus). I asked the coaches after the game what happened and on both plays the Bartlett player with the ball had passed the ball off just prior to the foul being called and thus it was a "push" and free throws. Great call by the ref on two quick plays that I missed. Bottom line folks, refs have to have tough skin to do what they do but cut em a little slack. I certainly don't ALWAYS agree on every call in every game and sometimes fans grumble and shout. But if coaches shouldn't cuss and swear at players/students shouldn't cuss and swear at opposing teams, then certainly fans in general shouldn't have the liberty to use that kind of language directed at a ref.
  2. Sorry guys. The score was my bad. It was late when I typed that post and it slipped.
  3. I only ask two things of any ref 1) Keep the game under control 2) Be consistant( even if it's consistantly bad on both sides)
  4. Final: Brentwood 76 Bartlett 54 It was a really good game and both teams played well. The score really doesn't indicate how good a game it was. Jaycen Herring did have 37 pts(yes, the 1st 20 Bartlett pts until Bill Clements hit a three about 4 minutes ino the 2nd) and Brandon Wright had 35. Bartlett's tallest player(Herring) stands at 6'4 so there was no real answer for Wright( although Herring did get a couple blocks on him). That said, Wright blocked a lot more shots.haha. It was 30-28 Brentwood at halftime and was still a six point game late in the 4th but bottom line is that Brentwood played smart down the stretch and we didn't.Both teams shot well from the free-throw line however due to Brentwood's size and quickness they shot 18 for 22 from the line as opposed to Bartlett's 5 for 6. I credit Brentwood's defense for shutting down everybody except Herring but we certeinly didn't help ourselves any. Tough loss but a good game against a quality opponent. Congrats and good luck to Brentwood heading into the coming post-season Glad I could help Wesvols. If ya ever need some info don't be a stranger Hey, email me at Pantherbert@aol.com and I'll tell you how you can listen to an archive of the game if you want.
  5. Wesvol, please forgive me but these stats are about a week old an do not include the games against Millington and Bolton. Jaycen Herring- avg 19.5 pts a game- cannot be guarded one on one, the star of the team, great slasher and very athletic, has a soft touch but is pretty lean Cory Smith-avg 7.9 pts a game, not as athletic as Jaycen but still has a nice touch however has been struggling lately Raymond ''Jr" Edwards- avg 7.5 a game- Runs the point, great ball handler and has developed a nice 10ft jumpshot, a nice surprise this season Randy Richmond- avg7 pts a game- Can't jump out of the gym but does a decent job under the boards Bill Clements- avg 6.7 pts a game- Became eligible after Christmas, DEADLY from 3-point land when he's on. VERY quick release. Not as much a defensive minded player as is Edwards. Phillip Harris and Mickey May- These guys don't score much( both avg 1.1 pts) band are small but they are the Shane Battier's of the team in a defensive sense Chris Williams- has gotten more PT but has a tendency to shoot to quickly. Has gotten much better on defense though The Panthers have had a tough year and a brutal 2nd half of the season ( playing White Station, Mills Academy,Ark( #2 in 4A), Central, and tonight Brentwood) but to have lost Brandon Allen( our best inside presence and about 15-20 pts a night) AND Hubie Smith in the off-season I'm proud of them. Coaches Deaton and Dykes have done a wonderful job. Bartlett really has no true size inside but Herring and Richmond do a good job cleaning up rebounds. Bartlett had a bulky 6-5 kid who got himself thrown off the team so that has hurt but coaches have to do what they have to do. There is another 6-5 sophomore named Matt Ross who is on the roster but has just this past week returned to active status after a knee injury playing in JV games but hasn't got any varsity minutes yet. Also Wesvol, I think Opperman is back in at OBU but I'll be there for sure. I'm with the radio crew so I hope to see you if you are going to be there. Take care
  6. Yeah bhsbaseball, I posted that shortly after the victory against Bolton. What a great win! Jaycen Herring said after the game that all he could think about in those last ten seconds was the game against Dyersburg last year in the region tourney when he lost his handle on the ball on the last play and we lost. He has become such a clutch player and he showed it friday night. Now, I don't want to overlook anybody but Munford shouldn't be a problem. Although, the Cordova games worries me a little since it will be the third time that we've played them this year and the second time on their home floor. Not that it matters since the district is ours regardless. I just wanna go 8-0 Bartlett will play in the Shelby Co. Championship for sure but who they will play is still in doubt. Germantown is 13-10 and was the leading contender to oppose the Panthers but they are going to be forced to forfeit most of( if not all of) their games for playing an ineligible player. Houston(8-13) and Collierville(5-12) are the next in line. I'm note sure which one we'll play yet. btw bhsbaseball, are you a student at Bartlett or just a fan?
  7. You can't play with us hmmmm, where have I heard this before/
  8. Last night the Bartlett Panthers Clinched a regular season district champoinship and the right to play in the Shelby Co. Championship by defeating rival Bolton 48-47. It was an incredible game by both teams and came right down to the wire. Bolton was leading 47-46 with ten seconds left after a bigtime 3 point basket by junior Patrick Brandon. Bartlett senior Jaycen Herring then took the ball the length of the court got by his defender, split two more in the lane, and laid it in the basket with one tenth of a second remaining! Great game by both teams and Congrats to the Panthers on the 6-0 district record!
  9. I totally agree Mas that White Station could beat anybody from the Bluegrass state but I do think there are teams in Ky that could at least hang with WS. You're right, the Spartans don;t get rattled easily but I'd certainly hate to have to go up and play at Lexington Catholic, PRP, Louisville Male, or Lone Oak for that matter( although the WS would destroy the Purple Flash)..haha
  10. Ok. Most teams I know do not but if they are used to that kind of schedule then I wouldn't worry either.
  11. It will be a great game but it will be tough on BA to play Tues. night against Bartlett and then have to turn around and play again at 3pm the next day.
  12. I'm sorry but I have little sympathy for this situation. Teams can't hold the ball like that if the defense comes out far enough to start a five count. Play some defense Man, this thread is like a bad cold...it just seems to never go away
  13. To be honest I don't think the class system has much to do with it. In Kentucky basketball is pretty much a religion and it isn't in Tennessee. That's why the atmosphere is the way it is in Ky in my opinion but this is how I look at some great programs that have great success and have had in the past. I haven't included any east Tn or Middle simply because I haven't been to any games with those schools but there are some fantastic programs state wide. AAA White Station, Ridgeway,Hamilton,Bartlett,Bolton,Dyersburg(great fans), Jackson North Side, AA Raleigh-Egypt,BTW,Kingsbury, Dyer Co, Union City A I can't speak on any single A teams Private Schools Harding,Lausanne,MUS,Briarcrest No doubt there are several teams I could have added but the point is that these teams I can almost guarantee you don't have anything like the atmosphere as any bad team in Ky unless it's a big game. I've never been to a game at Dyer Co or JNS but I can't imagine that they have such a home court advantage( if you do then I'm VERY glad I'm wrong)
  14. Something like that happened to me the last time Bartlett went to the state tourney during the semi-final game. That was stupid but having that kind of thing happen at a college game is just wrong.( not that I'm a UT fan by any stretch)
  15. I agree. Great student support makes for a more fun experiance. That's about the only thing I dislike about living near a large metropolitan area is there are so many other things to do a lot of students at schools usually don't show up at games. It's a lot different from Ky (where my family is from) where every team with a 1-17 record packs out their gym every night. Even so, Tennessee high school basketball has made great strides and I hope fans of their respective teams statewide continue to dress up,yell out school chants, stomp the bleachers, etc. The louder the better!!! GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!
  16. I wouldn't expect either team to have an easy night should this game happen....emotions would be running that much higher for a state title. Even so, somebody said it earlier, it could be very difficult to beat WS twice. Not impossible...but I gotta give the Spartans the nod. This is, of course, assuming that either team(as good as they are) doesn't get upset along the way.
  17. I guess pre-season summer games should be counted too.
  18. Can't disagre with ya on that one Falvo
  19. Let's define enjoyable basketball. A shot clock is put in. OK. Now fans begin to see faster paced games. yaaaaaaay. More dunks and flashy plays....yahoo!! Fans also get to see more and more turn-overs, less and less defense, and more frustration becuase poor John Q Public can't figure out why the blessed shot clock won't work correctly. Yeah, I can't wait for that game. Truth is, most high school players don't have the fundamentals of the game down to a point to where they can play a disiplined game with such college rules such as shot clock which would produce the said results. Granted, I love dunks and flashy plays too...but there is soooo much more to basketball than that. NCSeagle, I can understand getting frustrated but the team on offense cannot hold the ball like that if the defense comes out to guard them. It doesn't even have to be real pressure defense...just enough to get a five count started and make the other team run some offense.
  20. Well said Waco. Freshman basketball is a great way to gauge the dreaded "P'' word of players coming up in a team's system.I think it's also a time to see how much they are willing to work.Although, I've seen players who I thought wouldn't be all that great and turned out to be clutch players. In 2001, Bartlett played a soph. named Chase Hardin who I honestly didn't expect much out of coming in at varsity. Everytime he touched the ball it seemed like he would turn it over. But ya know what? This guy improved by leaps and bounds that year, was very key to the Panthers state championship run, and by his senior year last season he was an excellent floor general and team leader. A wonderful player with a terrific work ethic. Long story but the point is that freshman can surprise you and that first year is important but not always all-telling. Since this thread IS about freshman teams, Bartlett's has been very good this year. It's a very talented class lead by Hauns Brereton( I think I spelled it right) and Phillip Ryan that has also taken all but two spots on the JV squad as well. Although we seem cursed in losing talented feshan classes to moves and injury so I'm keeping my fingers crossed but I can't wait to see this guys (hopefully) develope and grow together.
  21. yeah Showtime, could you post what publications you've read? It's fantastic if it;s true but I follow Bartlett Basketball closer than most parents of players and I haven't heard that. thanks
  22. Trash talkin is fine as long as someone doesn't take it to an unacceptable level
  23. Allen is still a good player not near what he was when he was a freshman/Sophomore. From what I hear he's larger and not as quick as he used to be( maybe since he started playing football too). I'm not sure how he'll do at Memphis next year as a walk-on.
  24. This is getting very old. Back to the topic at hand. My two favorite teams: the Bartlett Panthers and whoever is playing the Bolton Wildcats. Cheeringsensation, don't sweat it. While your original post was a tad off the wall it beats some odd post on here "like" ''Top Janitors in Norteast TN" or " Best Popcorn stuck to the bleachers". However, it's probably a good idea to cease talking about #12 unless it is about his playing ability.
