  1. Out of the 11 games this year, 4 got out of hand. Maryville (waste of one of my Friday nights). Alcoa (another waste of my Friday night). Science Hill (Fall Break where we always suck...next year we finally got a bye there). Oakland (a waste of time and money and gas for everyone involved..TN vs TN Tech Like). The other 7 games were entertaining, and unfortunately WB could not make the plays to win at the end. So, as far as competing, I think they did well considering that Maryville, Alcoa, and Oakland are on a different level. However, being in 5A where Heritage was the last two years, most all of their scores were close and exciting games and I believe a year playing those teams would really benefit WBHS and the morale. Maybe its not a Super 32.....but a SUPER 16 where you just take the Top 16 teams in the state and let them battle every night while the normal high schools play more entertaining contests. Right now, everyone in 6A this side of Crossville is just playing for fun because Maryville has made a mockery of the game because they are so good. It reminds me of the 1980s when TN women's basketball was just absolutely routing everyone. While it's not their fault they were so dominant, it surely took away from the parity and enjoyment of the games. I know Coach Quarles is truly excited about the challenge this Friday night, and surely the Maryville fans are excited also. I mean even as a Tennessee fan I could have cared less to watch them play Tennessee Tech. That's what it is like for GQ on a regular basis.
  2. The old statement about there are tons of athletes walking the halls is a fallacy. I know. I have been here since 1999. A huge percentage of the males spend their day at the CTE building and don't know where the football field is even located.
  3. Gary...you are correct. They would use a multiplier which would put WB right back in the top.
  4. Correct. However, at the Academy we do not have a separate "Head Principal." Mr. Merritt is basically running the Academy but is still considered an assistant principal. Mr. Clark is the head principal of the entire school. If WB were to have two "head principals", then Heritage would have to have the same.
  5. Copeland did not play. That, of course, helped WB out. He makes a big difference. WB was down in that game 37-30 at half but opened the 2nd half on a 34-5 run. And yes, Mr. Yoakum has been playing very well. The Powell game was a game in which everyone was on fire. The Govs shot 16-24 from 3 and had 6 players in double figures. Powell also was on fire from beyond the arc. As far as not scheduling Alcoa in football, WBHS is trying to win games. If WB can go 5-5 it looks better than 2-8. They have no chance of winning that matchup at this time, and, quite honestly, the game isn't good for Alcoa either (except for no travel.) Alcoa fans I am sure would rather watch them play a team like Fulton or Greenville where the outcome is not already decided. Let's talk about student enrollment for a while. Totally overrated. We have 1800 students. Great. That's why we have a great variety of academic options as well as the best CTE program in the state. But, as you can tell over a period of 37 years, it has nothing to do with football success. Out of those 1800, lets say 900 are males. We have about 30-40 legitimate male athletes walking around, and most of them play 2 or 3 sports. Most of our male student population is at the CTE building learning how to weld, fix cars, cook, build houses, landscape, etc........ you know....the things that I can't do and have to pay people big money to do. So I am not a fan of classifying solely based on enrollment. Now I do think it matters when you are dealing with small schools (less than 500). I would be more in favor of having classifications based on a combination of 3 things in this order: 1) Success over the last 4 years 2) Geography 3) Enrollment Would high school football not be more entertaining in this area if all of the good teams were in the same region. Could you imagine a league with Maryville, Alcoa, Greenville, Catholic, Fulton....etc Friday nights would no longer be predictable like they are now. We all know every Friday night that Maryville is going to be ahead 42-0 or 49-0 and then they let the other team score at the end. It's the same story every week (except when they play Alcoa, Fulton, and the last two playoff games.) We all know Alcoa is going to have a good game with Maryville and then they are going to crush every other team on their schedule until late in the playoffs. On the flip side, teams like WBHS need a break from the Maryvilles, Alcoas, DBs, Science Hills, Hardin Valleys, Oaklands....of the world. Heritage actually got to enjoy that their last two years. They played in a very competitive Region where the outcome was always unknown. Now next year they are back in the grind with the big boys and its not going to be fun. Anyway....my point is that enrollment should not the only deciding factor when determining Regions. The TSSAA keeps doing the same thing over and over, and that why you keep getting the same teams every year in the championship games. Heck I am sure DB would love to once not have to beat a Maryville to make it to the semifinal game. Many of the Maryville faithful would say...."get better so you can compete." OK. Great advice. But unless Maryville drops off, other teams "getting better" just means the score will be 35-7 instead of 42-7 or 49-7. And, I don't think that is happening anytime soon. I have seen both Maryville and Oakland play. Now this will be a good game. Oakland has more athletes, but Maryville is Maryville. And that is why they will win. I predict a low scoring 21-20 final.
  6. I have seen both play. Granted, I didn't get to see the starters for too long but I have at least seen them. Between the lines, Oakland has more talent. They look like a small college team. However, Maryville is Maryville. And that is why Maryville will win. This is just another game for Maryville. They won't be any more hyped up than they need to be. George will do his thing and get the win, because that's "what they do." I do think it will be a relatively low scoring affair. Maryville 21 Oakland 20 Maryville blocks the potential tying extra point with 1 second left.
  7. On a positive note, the basketball Govs have started the season with wins over Bradley Central 73-62, South Doyle 61-58, and Powell 100-92. The 100 points scored Saturday night was a school record. They will Host Riverdale Tuesday night.
  8. Don't know much about Stone Memorial except they were 10-1 this year so I am not sure how that is considered a guaranteed win.

  10. I apologize for reading the ad. I really don't think you know me very well. That's why I put my phone number on here. Message boards are not a good way to make assumptions of people. Just know....there are a lot of good things happening at WBHS. I think the reason many WB and HHS folk get defensive is because all they ever hear about is Maryville and Alcoa. Yes they are great schools. But we have just as many good students and just as many good teachers here as well. Heck our ACT scores surpassed Alcoa last spring for the first time ever. We have 12 AP classes. We have kids every year that score perfect on the ACT. Two years ago we sent kids to Yale and Penn. Last year we sent one to Duke. So..yes...there are WB supporters that feel like this information is not heard by the public. Yesterday the Advanced Ed Accreditation team finished their visit of WBHS (accreditation happens once every four years). WBHS scored a 306 with the Advanced Ed average score being 276. One of the members of the team said, "wow..I had no idea all of these things were happening at this school. I just thought Maryville and Alcoa were the only good schools in Blount County." He then stated that with everything that we offer academically from AP classes to everything we offer in the CTE building that a parent would be crazy not to send their child to WBHS. I have always wondered why graduates of WBHS who live in the county send their kids to city schools. I graduated from WBHS in 1989 as valedictorian and went on to have a 4.0 at Maryville College. I am pretty sure we educate kids just fine. The one thing we have never been able to fully do well for extended periods of time is win in male sports. Yes we have had a few nice years, but they come few and far between. Many feel like outsiders have a negative view of WBHS because of our male sporting teams, when sports are "extra-curricular." I know this is a sports message board, but I just wanted to throw those things out there. Anyway, sorry for reading the ad.
  11. Amen We haven't won more than 3 football games since 2007. You are supposed to be liked when your getting beat every Friday night. I thought we only disliked teams that won all the time. No one says...."Man I hate the dang 49ers."
  12. Sorry. You obviously do not like me. I believe Maryville is a great school. So is Alcoa. So is Heritage. So is WBHS. I just get tired of all the WBHS bashing, and I am not sure why it is necessary. I obviously do not belong on this site because too many of these posts simply try to get people mad. And I bit. I truly, however, think that all schools are good, and those that are teaching at all of them are grossly underpaid for what they do for society. I will end it at that. Once again sorry if I have come across rude. I do like the dance though...I actually saw my mother (who passed away last year) in the stands during this video. Good stuff.
  13. There are NO ISSUES. Shad was paid $2,000 for field maintenance in 2015. Two assistants were paid $2,000 to coach from Booster club funds. No gas cards...no $90,000 worth of funds going anywhere. Our bookkeeper is as tight as it gets. I promise. I would love to see the same audit performed at every school in this state and see some headlines. I would say our 5 errors pale in comparison. I bet no other coach in the state got paid to take care of his field (wait....most all other schools have been handed a turf field so there actually may not be any other grass fields in the state besides ours and Heritage) Is beating our brains in on the field not enough for some (not all) of you posters on here? I am proud of our school. Many of you think we are a bunch of clowns. I would beg to differ. Our male sports teams have been, for the most part, bad since 2007. But there is more to a school than sports. As a matter of fact, I have grown to realize that there is a lot more to school than sports. Sports for most students ends at age 18. Then the real world hits. I would take our post secondary students and match them against any other schools. We produce a lot of quality college students and quality people once they graduate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a00eoTbXLic
  14. I do not know what is wrong with putting information on here. Also, I am not sure why there is so much harsh talk on this site. I like plenty of people that are at Maryville and Alcoa. I co-teach a small group with David Baumann (Lady Tornado head coach) each week. In that small group is Coach Eldridge (head coach at Maryville). I also play golf with Coach Quarles all summer long. I have nothing against any of those guys and consider them friends. I basically know who Jake is on this board but that is it (and GOVMAN). So I don't know who the rest of you are. I try to make appropriate comments on here and keep things classy. Sorry if you guys think I am a bad person. Call me if you have a problem. 865-621-3065 We will work it out. Shad has not had a good record the last two years, but this year WB was much improved on the field. A couple of breaks in the middle of the season, and this team could have easily won 5 games and could have won a playoff game against a weaker opponent. WB got smoked by Alcoa, Maryville, and Oakland (all 3 at another level). Bearden game went to OT, and Blount had the ball down one score in the last two minutes versus JEFF CO and Hardin Valley. Quite honestly, however, it's Maryville and everyone else. The rest are just playing for fun.
  15. I am the one who read the ad. Scott Cupp...play by play for WBHS. Phone number (865) 621-3065. 3347 Bekalea Drive Louisville TN 37777. Home phone (865) 977-0626. I did not write the ad. I was paid to read the ad. Sorry if it offended anyone. Sometimes I do things for money that I really don't want to do. Like drive 6 hours round trip to broadcast a game that is going to be 63-0. If anyone needs to call and talk about the ad, you have my information. For those who have not heard it, the ad basically says some students pay tuition to go to city schools for rings and don't get to play when they could stay at a county school and play and possibly make the county schools better. That was the nature of the ad. I am not saying that it happens, but that is what I read on the ad. I have not read everyone's comments on here, but someone contacted me and said I might want to look. So I have just posted this without really looking at anything else about it. The ad, as far as I know, has not been pulled. It is normally played during the Gov Nation show on Thursday nights.
  16. Oh wait.....we get 25% of the gate......hahahahahahahaha If we bring 50 people it will be a miracle.
  17. To clear some things up.....players that miss practice during the week without a doctor's note are not permitted to play on Friday nights. There were several players who missed practice on Monday for "undisclosed" reasons. So, they will not be making the trip. To be 2-8 is enough punishment for one season. Now, our lovely TSSAA further punishes the 2-8 team by forcing them to drive three hours and spend a couple thousand dollars just to suit up against the juggernaut Raiders. I am not real sure how this benefits the schools and the students. The Super 32 concept was one of the most ridiculous plans that the TSSAA has ever created. If an 8 seed stays within 14 of any 1 seed this Friday night, I am buying steak dinners for everyone I know. Even MLREB
  18. Right...WBHS could just go play Maryville and Coffee County could play Oakland.
  19. It is very sad that the TSSAA makes teams with 1-9 and 2-8 records travel 3 hours to play against teams that are 10-0, 9-1, etc.... just so the TSSAA can make money. The teams lose money as they only get 25% of a non-existent gate while they spend over $3,000 to get there. If a team is 1-9 or 2-8 they have no business playing in the post season. SILLY. Although Unaka probably should not forfeit the game, I can empathize with them.
  20. And I am glad I was wrong. I found it to be a very entertaining game...just like the WB Middle Game. Not sure what an earlier poster said about misuse of Mcgill in middle school game. He had over 170 yards. It isn't his fault the center snapped it over the quarterback's head 5 times which kept WBM from scoring more. Another example of someone blaming a coach for play calling when I am not sure Mcgill could have gotten many more carries. He was exhausted. He was running around all over the field. I am pretty sure the OC didn't call the "snap it over the QB head" play so WBM could have 3rd and 44. WBM did not play well at all. Neither did Tennessee. But in the end the better teams came out on top in both games. No doubt I have watched a lot of games involving Maryville, and that particular class is definitely not what I am used to seeing. Now if they can borrow a few players from around the area then it could be strong, but right now it is not.
  21. I love UT football.....but they are playing Appy St for goodness sake......mercy rule in Q3.
  22. Guaranteed? Mom doesn't agree. MHS has plenty of players. Every now and then it's ok for WB to get a few (the ones that come from their feeder schools). Heck getting players from outside the system isn't even a thought. We are doing all we can to keep our own. Not easy when two other high schools in your county HAVE THE TWO BEST RECORDS IN THE NATION OVER THE LAST DECADE. MHS will be fine without him. All GOV is Mr. McGill.
