  1. Wednesdays two matches were typical of the Volleyball rivalries in 7AAA, some of the best in the State. While the scores don't reflect it, the matches were closely played and held fans on the edge of their seats all night. As posted here, the times of the finals have been changed from 7:00 to 5:30.

So the big question is can the loser in 7 aaa go to Chattanooga and win in the sub state....can two 7 aaa teams make the state? I don't recall that ever happening before. Good luck to both teams.

  2. Page defeated Germantown 2-0 (25-19, 25-8), Friendship Christian 2-0 (25-23, 25-14), and Columbia 2-1 (25-15, 17-25, 15-7). I don't know any other results so check this link for more.

DB Beat Ravenwood in the finals. The Final 4 had 3 teams from 11 AAA in it. Ravenwood beat Indy and DB beat Brentwood.

Anyone have scores from the finals?

  3. Sorry PHargis, but I don't expect to see South at the Mid-TN Classic. Too many big dogs there for them to show up! :thumb:

It also looks like DB and Oak Ridge are in the same pool!

South was at the Franklin TOurnament, which wasn't a really strong field. THey got beat easily by Indy in the second round of the gold. They didn't play well at all...I think they are better then they looked. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the Region and Sub State.

Saw AC as well and I thought they would be way better based on the comments on here. DB and Karns are both really good however and both could be a final 4 team.

ORCAT...funny how your tune has changed.

  4. Who will be the top teams in this weekend's tournament?

Lafayette(KY) was runner-up to Karns in the Rocky Top

    tournament last weekend.

Who won the Sonic Blast tournament last weekend at Franklin?

Ravenwood beat Indy in the finals 2-0. It was a very good match. Ravenwood beat page to get to the finals and Indy beat Sullivan South 2-0.

  5. You all are ridiculous if you think Coach Shaffer doesn't have anything to do with the success at DB. It proves that you are more jealous and less intelligent about the game of volleyball. THey are the ONLY east tennessee team that is willing to play anyone, anytime, anywhere. I have coached against her several times and have the utmost respect for her. Can she be hard to take sometimes...yes...can she talk to much sometimes....yes. But you cannot question her competitiveness, knowledge of the game and most of all passion. DB may be down next year, who knows, but that has very little to do with coach and has more to do with volleyball not being as main stream in east tennessee.

Has she benefited from Coach Devine...of course. The same as Middle Tenn volleyball has from DLU, Belmont, MTSU, and many other college coaches or programs that impact our area.

  6. Congrats DB! So great to see a school get their first volleyball championship!

Coach Shaffer--i have thought how big a smile was on your dad's face when you won it all....sure am proud of you and your program. This championship has been a long time coming for you and you deserve it.

It is amazing how good Megan Divine is....i remember her tagging along with her mom when she was a little bitty thing about 5-6 years ago. Oh how time flies.

  7. You may be right Orcat! The big defference there is that DB played them at home, they could beat the Russians at home I think! Rwood beat them on a neutral court.

I agree about Red Bank, If they were in AAA they would be one of the 4-5 best teams in the tournament as well. That final will be a really good one.

Sure wish the TSAAA wouldnt play these games during the day...that's another story though.

  8. Hey, I would love for Karns to beat R-wood. That would be incredible. I was just illustrating how middle tenn has a pretty good thing going over here. I am really really happy for Karns. It would do a lot for knoxville volleyball if someone over there could win a championship. I was hoping that Farraguts coach would get a shot. If I had my wish, it would be Karns VS Siegel in the finals...unfortunatley that isn't going to happen probably. If Siegel can get passed Indy in the first round..they have a good shot to get to the winners bracket final...then they will play DB to go to the championship and play Ravenwood. My gut tells me it will R-wood and DB in the finals. Ravenwood in three....maybe 4.

I am curious as to why Oak Ridge doesn't make runs in volleyball? I think that would be a program that could be taken to this next level. What do you think ORCAT? Does AC get most of the volleyball talent?

  9. Wow, great point Orcat. I didn't realize that Middle Tenn has struggled so much. Let's take a look at this. As for Chattanooga, I completely agree. I don't consider them East Tennessee. They are there own volleyball power down there. We see a lot of them up here in Nashville.

So if we don't get to count Page and Brentwood, then....

Take Farragut and Anderson County out of Knox

Take South and DB out of Tri City.

Siegel has won as much as DB, Karns, and Farragut and they have only been open for 6-7 years.

Siegel--3 districts, 4 regions, 4 Sectional. So yes, they have won a couple of games.

Ravenwood and Centenial would have won just about every other district in the state last year.

So Brentwood (8), Father Ryan, (4), University School of Nash (4) Page (4), Harpeth Hall (2), Greenbrier (2), Hume Fogg, Glencliff, David Lipscomp and Indy all one a piece. I understand that Page and Brentwwod doesn't count, but just for arguement....I will include them.

    Let's take a look at Knoxville---Anderson County (1) , South Doyle (1)

    Upper East TN--South (3)

No results....BTW, send me that Poll that we made up. I have never seen a Volleyball poll?

AS for those teams being better then most Nashville teams....I agree 100%. Most Nashville teams arent too good.

  10. Since you asked for thoughts I will give you mine. THe records for most teams mean nothing. Nothing against Karns, cause I am VERY happy for that program, but their record compared to Indy, Siegel, Ravenwood and DB can't hold up. I have tons of respect for DB. They will play anyone and they travel to middle tenn multiple times. Collierville and Houston also try to play top teams as well.

If you were to seed this tournament, Karns would be #8. Please don't take offense to this, cause I am sure they are talented. Ravenwood, DB, Siegel, and Indy would be the top 4 seeds IMO.

I do wish DB and Ravenwood were in seperate brackets, because they are clearly the two top teams. That isn't too say one of the other 6 can't win. Cause I hope that happens.

If you look back at Knoxville teams success in the state, it isn't good lately. I hope Karns changes all of that this year.

I would like to get everyone's opinon about TSSAA going away from pool play?

  11. I am absolutly for this improvement. The first year it will be tough, because of the inexperience of the officials. It is a good sign that Voleyball is progressing enough in our state for this to happen. This should have happened years ago. It will help our officiating overall, it will just take a little time. The up ref can focus more on their responsibility, rather then the net. Maybe someday we will have a state tournament that doesn't start at 9:30 AM on a Tuesday....small steps!

  12. In a shocking announcement made at the July 6th Page parents' meeting, Head Coach Karen Boots told the crowd that she would have to resign due to a nagging back problem that has recently gotten worse. She will have to undergo surgery shortly. She will also have to leave Page as a geometry teacher.

I will miss her greatly as I felt she had done an excellent job taking over from former Page Coach Mindy Stone.

The meeting continued with Troy Helton taking over to explain the team rules and other information useful to the parents. Charlotte Townsend also explained the finances for the team.

The search for a new Head Coach has already begun with at least 5 applications received by Athletic Director Jack Daniels. I'm sure I'll more on this developing story.

It doesn't appear there is a teaching opening there? Are they looking for an existing teacher to be the "sponser"?

  13. Chattanooga Central needs a coach also!!!!!!!!!!

Just to try and keep the speculation from running rampant....here are some details.

Coach Slaughter is leaving Siegel, her husband works in Williamson County and drives over an hour everyday. The company he works for wants him to live in the area and his job will be in that area long term and it is best for their family to move. They are very sad and loved being at Siegel. She announced it to her team last night, so it's official.

Based on what she told the team, she has no job over there yet, but is going back into teaching and if the possibility of coaching presents itself then she would consider it. (she took the last two or three yeas off from teaching to be home with the babies.)

  14. My 2 cents worth & I am not there this week, nor have I ever been to Siegel or Blackman schools, but since this was a late decision made by the T$$AA to have this tournament at these schools, I would almost guarantee you that they did not do any kind of onsite walk thru at either school with the administrators prior to this event. I bet crowd control, parking arrangements, ect were never discussed. Just admission pricing, parking pricing and concession pricing and then only to what pertains to T$$AA's % of cut expected of each. I imagine the (VOLUNTEERS) at each school were overwhelmed, but were doing the best they could with little if any support. WE ALL KNOW THAT EACH SCHOOL BASICALLY HAS THE SAME PARENTS VOLUNTEERING FOR EVERYTHING. To them, I would say, "Thank you for your help and sorry that the T$$AA threw this in your lap." As for the rowdy crowds, SURELY, someone from the Administration of the offensive school's students was there for the STATE SEMIS & CHAMPIONSHIP??? SURELY say it is so, but shame on them for doing NOTHING! Just my opionion, maybe there is more to the story than is being told.

Shockingly enough, there was a walk through and all of that was discussed. I am very, very proud of the parents, players and coach's of Siegel. If not for them, it would have been way worse. Can you imagine how bad it would have been if Siegel would have qualified for the state? Since they did 90% of the work...it would have been so much worse. Thank you to Ms. Doris, Coach Slaughter, and Mr. Lykins....and too many parents and players to even try to mention by name.

It was interesting to see TSSAA officials sitting at the table watching, while line judges had to keep people of the court.

And amidst all that, I think it went pretty well. And beleive me when I say, whatever money the programs get out of this.....it wasn't worth it I would bet.

    Overwhelmed....to say the least.

  15. To his credit I received a reply from Mr Carter today. It basically sounds like MTSU placed such a cost prohibitive amount in front of them they had no choice. I still believe however, that an alternative could have been explored long ago. Next year will probably be spilt up anyway as the D-1 schools will have three different classes....without a doubt a Friday/Saturday event would take care of a lot of issues on the gate side... the key is communication TSSAA!!! Get started now and make it a priority...

Did he comment on the ridiculous start times? Now that it is at a High School, there should be no conflicts at all.

  16. I would think that putting banners and posters of unused folded up seats is a thing of the past in that there are none and likely not many unused seats. Seating is about 2500 if there is one court and less if there is two used, maybe 1800. GLJ is correct and it has been the case every year. Putting people in the seats can correct a lot of the problems and working at it from that angle is the right thing.

I could be wrong on this, but I think it had less to do with MTSU not wanting it, and more to do with TSSAA not wanting to pay it. They lose money on this event every year I assume. Maybe it has to do with their idiotic decision to play at noon on a Wednesday. I am blown away by their stupidity. It is a slap in the face of High School Volleyball. I could deal with not playing at MTSU as long as they made the games start later in the day. i tend to agree with Pageman. MTSU was way over rated.
