1. Was it Cookeville or White Co with the big MH in hitting line ..one played in Chattanooga early in the season and had a good match vs. GPS but got beat by lesser tms easily???

That is Cookeville. They have a really good team and middle hitter. She is a junior, they also have a good freshman middle that is going to be a good player.

Siegel is the only team that beat them in the district. They play again next thursday. It should be a great match. I think C'ville can make some noise in the District/Region tournament. The team that loses Region 4 travels to Chatt to play the winner of that region. Whoever goes to Chatt will have their hands full but either way it should be a even match.

  2. Seigal should do well at state, considering that they play some of the games on their home floor - which personally is not appropriate considering there are other venues. I also thought it interesting at last years state tourny that Seigal paraded several students through during part of a match free of charge! :thumb:

Siegel will not host AAA this year. I think it is A/AA at Siegel.

  3. Well coacht must not have liked my last post. There is no way anyone can have Farragut not in the top ten. They are 33 - 7 and have lost only to private schools. GPS and WEBB twice each. So there are 4 of there 7 losses. They have beat AC, DB, siegel in play day, and Ooltewah. They are dominating their district with a 10 - 0 record. The matches they have lost have all been close. All this after graduating 7 Seniors. This years team has only one Senior and only 2 girls with true varsity experience. Just a thought here.

When did you beat Siegel in a playday? I am pretty sure you have not played Siegel. Playday's are no indicator at all, teams are still trying to figure out who to play and trying to figure out rotations etc. If you want Farragut to be in the top 10...someone better be voting for them. I am not saying they are not a top 10 team...they may be

Who have they beat in the regular season that is on the top 10 list? In your opinion who are they better then on the top 10? I also think one reason that you may not be getting a lot of votes is because you were really good last year and didn't get out of your Sub State, now you are much younger and winning the same amount.

good luck this year...hope you make it to the state--really thought you would be there last year.

  4. I think everyone should proceed with caution before predicting the demise of Brentwood based on one match loss. From all indications, Brentwood dominated the BVIT last weekend, then went to Huntsville on Tuesday and defeated two of the Alabama powerhouses. Brentwood may have experienced a let down from so much intense play or took Siegal for granted since they have beaten them easily in the past. Any time you take ANY team for granted, you are in trouble. I will be surprised if that match loss was anything but a fluke.

Not sure anyone is predicting B'woods demise. They are the best and anyone who know anything about volleyball knows that. THey have beat Siegel 3/4 so you will see no chest beating from the Siegel camp.

I feel that there is great respect between the two teams from the coach all the way down to the parents. We could be in a situation where our states best team doesn't represent our state well. Fortunatlty we are not in that situation.

Call it a fluke, call it a let down, call it whatever you want. But the Siegel program should feel very good about it. There have been many great teams never take a game off them.

  5. South seems to have bad luck with players. Last year with 2 starters coming down with mono at the state tourney, and now with their all-state setter/outside hitter down with a broken foot.(I have been told she will be back just before the Districts) DB played without making errors, and they played good defense. South just was not clicking. It was only the second match with a diffrent setter all year. They go to the Pickens South Carolina this weekend to play. Good luck to DB and Sullivan South the rest of the year. Good job Siegle on beating brentwood.

Amazing that she may be back. That will only be about 4 weeks after breaking her ankle. Hope she is back, it just wouldn't be the same if she isn't.

Fluke or no fluke, it was a big win for Siegel. B'wood had dominated them this year. It was probably just as beneficial for brentwood to lose as it was Siegel to win.

  6. I agree, bruinfam, that a mention in a sports summary page half way down where the talk is about whose not there, is somewhat disappointing. Maybe coverage will be better once the post-season play begins. I went to your tournament as I knew there wouldn't be much in the paper about it. It was one of the premier events in volleyball, but regular season football rules on Friday nights.

For the record, The Daily News Jornal and The Rutherford AM in Murfreesboro both do a great job. We are very fortunate.

  7. Congratulations to the DB lady Indians for rebounding from last weekend's disappointing performance in the Brentwood tournament to beat South and force a tie for 1st in District 1-AAA.

    http://tricitiessports.com/default.asp?sou...ebath=&subname=

Congrats to DB--a hugh win. Coach Shaffer is terrific.

I am so sorry to hear about South's injury..that is terrible! Hopefully you can regroup and get back to winning.

Siegel can relate to you, our middle has been out for 2 weeks and is questionable to be back this year. One inury changes so much. Our prayers are with her and the rest of the South team...they are a class bunch.

  8. For the record-

    HS Tri- 25-25-25

    HS Single/Dual- 25-25-25-25-15

    Most MS- 25-25-15

    Metro MS- 21-21-15

HS Tournaments- by adoption, but most are 25-25-15

MS Tournaments- by adoption, but most are 25-25 pool, 25-25-15 elimination

    JV (all)- 25-25-15

Some conferences (MS and non-TSSAA) adopt their own variations, but this is, for the most part, how it's supposed to be!!

THis cost us a match in the Blackman JV tournament against Brentwood JV. We beat them to 15 in the third game but they beat us to 25. The Siegel JV team was really upset.

Also everytime we go to Sparta or Cookeville they make us play to 25 in the third game. So maybe we should make this a different thread so our terrific officials know the rules.

  9. No doubt one of the best blockers/defensive MH around.  She is a really good player.

I have a feeling that CHS and Siegel will play at least 3 more times this season.

    Siegel wins in three tonight.

Anyother scored from around 7 AAA?

  10. 7 from Dig To Win last yr are playing in college.

*Newberry did not play club her sr. yr but had played 2.5 seasons prior to that.  She is the exception to exceptions, she was so gifted that she could not have played in HS either and still been a standout in college.  But, other than lara, I know of 2 local girls in the last 6 yrs who did not play club but went on to play in college (for tms their HS team could beat).

    825757096

Ashley Asbury at MTSU did not play club, but she is one of the best athletes I have ever seen. According to Coach at MTSU she can touch 10'4 on a running jump.

Give a year of Volleyball and she will be an impact player at MTSU (16-1).

  11. Cookeville is looking forward to meeting Siegel again.  The Cookeville MH - #21 - Nikki James - deserves the praise.  Not sure how to get that name out as a contender for Top Players in the state, but as a junior she still has another year to improve.  Taylor Denney - #11 - SET/OH is also a strong force on the court.  All the top Player lists I've seen have not listed any players from Cookeville's district, except for the Murfreesboro schools.  Does Club ball play a part when those lists are made up?

I don't think Coach Brooks intended to incite Siegel.  Probably more of a challenge to show confidence in her team.  Cookeville has great respect for Siegel - players and coaches - and it's always great to watch 2 good teams play.

  12. "A great club system and consistent coaching are the difference."

OK, define consistent coaching.  Do you mean coaching strategies or experience level?  Do you mean philosophies or tendencies?  Draw me a model of the "perfect coach" or "perfect club".

Hard to define and build it...but easy to criticize, especially in anonymity.  A great club takes time to evolve, and that is happening here in Nashville, and in Chattanooga, and in Memphis, and in Knoxville.  The state's vb is getting better every year.  Fact is, you only get out of it what you put into it.  More kids are playing club every year, thus the level of vb in TN is getting better all the time.  There is more parity now than ever, as should be evident from this weekend's Brentwood Invt.  Some of the state's best teams got together and put on quite a show.  BGA beat Ryan.  HH beat Germantown.  Both unlikely in recent history.  Because of the coaching?  Maybe.  But more than likely because of the talent.  BGA has a great coach, but also a great bunch of Freshman that are contributing plus some upper classmen with tons of experience in club.  HH has a good coach.  But would they have won and reached the finals without Taylor?  Maybe, but not likely.  Germantown beat Brentwood a game 25-9.  25-9!!  Is that because of the coaching?  The same two coaches have been there for over a decade.  No, because of the play of the kids.

And as far as TN vs Alabama or TN vs KY....BHS and Grissom have been swapping blows for years.  It goes back and forth.  This year Grissom won, barely.  Before it was Brentwood.  McGill came to the BIVT in 2003 and didn't make the Gold division, but won the AAAAAA State Championship over in Alabama.  Does that mean that AL was inferior to TN that year?

This weekend my team went to Louisville for a tournament and won, (not losing a game) and beat Sacred Heart in the finals 25-18, 25-19.  Does that mean that all TN is getting better than KY?  Of course not.  My point STILL is that each team is different, each club is different, EACH COACH IS DIFFERENT, even in Kiva or Nasa.  There is no "perfect" system.  You cannot generalize that this area or that area is better or worse in coaching, on the whole.  There are too many variables, yes including talent, and more importantly EXPERIENCE of the players.

How did Assumption do in Vegas?

  13. OK, it’s official, times have changed!

Since so many of you saw most of the state's best at this wkend's tourney maybe it's a good time to consider how our TN girls are tracking on a national perspective.  (Please, it doesn't do us any good to talk over and over about the top 5 in the state ..at least on this thread.  Let's look at the pack of 100 or so who are on the market.)

Below are some cumulative observations from watching a collegiate tourney this wkend and thinking back to how much things have changed just in the last 6 yrs.  If your daughter wishes to play in college then you may wish to consider these generalizations ..and hopefully others will reply here with their perspectives too.

Tms in the event , in order of finish were:

    Georgetown- Georgetown,Ky

    Lee University- Cleveland, TN

    Olivet Nazarene- Bourbannais, IL

    Spring Hill- Mobile, AL

    Faulkner- Montgomery, AL

Here is the summary- The number of easy scholarships to be claimed is few and getting fewer, you gotta be able to play now because the competition is for real.  More and more small/medium colleges now recruit nationally at USAV National Qualifiers and Nationals.  And, more and more recruit internationally as well. They have seen what is out there and are less and less inclined to “settle” for a descent local girl.  The number of recruitable, experienced, fit, well-coached girls is greater than you may know.  Are you listening to those who tell you that height doesn’t matter?  Spend 30 minutes pulling up as many rosters as you can on the internet and decide for yourself!  Rule of thumb- “for every inch under 6 ft. you are, you need to do something 10% better than most girls.”

*Serve Receive. If you can’t receive serve well under pressure then you don’t get to receive serve!  Not at all in college.

*Setting. There are SO many good setters in the country now. Being the 2nd best in your city may not mean anything.  There are about 500K girls who play HS ball.  There are about 140K who play Jr. Olympics.  If 1/7th of them are setters, then that’s a lot of good setters!  You have to be able to set an offense, not just set the 2nd ball.

*Mentality.  There are tens of thousands of gilrs who get that VB is about being fully present in the moment with an eye towards what is about to happen.  Yet, how many TN players spend their game reliving, rejoicing, rehashing or regretting the LAST point?  (And, how many coaches still coach the point that just ended rather than the points you can do something about?)

*Serving. It’s getting harder and harder because passing, setting and hitting are getting better and better.  The days of “You gotta get your serve in” are over.  If you want to compete for the t-shirts you MUST serve tough.

*Attacking. The days of being a good athlete and therefore being able to be an effective hitter are over.  You now have to be a good athlete, who has proper mechanics, who has played with good setters, who has played against well-coached blks, who has played a lot!  .  If any one of those is missing then there are hundreds and hundreds of girls who have the whole package.  And, if you can’t hit for a good % against tall, well-coached blkers then, duh, you don’t get to hit in college!

*Blocking. More ht, more discipline, more experience.  The last college coach who didn’t get that you can’t leave your little setter in the front row or put the uncoordinated girl in to play rt. side ..that coach died last week …so, times have now changed.  Sorry, but blking in TN is overall “bad” ..not avg, not pretty good ..it’s bad.  So our hitters have no idea how much tougher it will be if you have a glitch in mechanics or control.  And blkers, your competition for frnt row time is tougher and TALLER than you understand.

*Defense.  More and more girls have played MANY seasons against good hitters and offenses.  If you play DS in TN you prob. aren’t digging enough hard balls to be ready for mid-level college.  And, with the libero rule, college tms don’t use as many DS’s.  One girl now plays the spot where 2 used to play.  So, the libero rule does NOT make it easier to get a scholarship as a DS, it makes it MUCH harder (no matter what some posters here have conjectured  )

I went up to a player y'day who was a very tall and talented blker from Chicago and asked her what we could say to parents and players who don’t know that they don’t know about how tough it is now to get a scholarship even at NAIA or DII schools.  She said to show you video of the avg. tms so you could see just how good they really are.  She also said, “Ye, in HS I thought I knew about everything.  Boy was I wrong, I had no idea how much more there was to it.”  And, this was maybe the 2nd best blker in the gym ..who was, as it turned out, a freshman!

Are there still colleges out there that wouldn’t break pool at the Choo Choo?  Yes, but not nearly as many.  And, do you want to play for a college tm that your HS tm could beat?  Most mid-level and even below avg collegiate programs are now recruiting nationally.  Are you training to be recruitable nationally?

So, what you do with this info is up to you.  Can you still get a scholarship?  Yes.  Are you training hard enough to be able to keep your collegiate spot when tomorrow's more advanced crop comes in as freshamn?  Will as many girls get a VB scholarship on the SB field as used to be able to?  Well, there didn’t use to be 140,000 girls playing VB 9 months each yr instead of 3.5 months.  If you are a good athlete who finishes HS having played 6 avg. VB seasons can you still outplay girls who have had 6 avg seasons like you AND 4, 5, 6, or 7 really competitive seasons on top of that??  I strongly believe girls should do what THEY want to do, not what some club or HS “needs” them to do, so I am NOT encouraging you to specialize ..I’m just pointing out that “It’s official, times have changed and the easy scholarships are harder and harder to come by.”

    Play hard, have fun.

*Others please pitch in your perspective.  Thank you.

Here is the crazy thing Compassion. Many of the girls in our state would scoff at the thought of going to LEE or Georgetown, because they are not "D-1" and they have never heard of them. Little do they know how incredible both of those programs are. They can hang with and beat many D-1 programs and most D2 programs.

You didn't mention attitude on the court either... it means so much.

I would love it if girls were able to watch Lee and G-town play just to see how good NAIA ball is...as well as Div-2.

Georgetown has a new coach...sounds like the tradition is continuing.

  14. I wasn't at the match just what I heard and thats why i said perhaps they had a bad match too and that it was a bad match for both thats why I mentioned that I just know that Siegel played really bad

    825755211

There is an article in the Cookeville Newspaper about the game. Very interesting article.

  15. I will personally attest to this.

Janay is way under the radar- college coaches need to know about her. Someone needs to make a tape of her 'greatest hits' per se and send it out to some college coaches. She really is worthy of playing college ball. Phenomenal vertical, solid serve, and good blocking ability. She's around 5'10" or so and can JUMP!!

She really needs to get her name out there- good luck!

    825754824

I came away soooo impressed with #5 from G-town. She is one of the best 2 or 3 players in the entire state. SHe is really good.

  16. Go Stars.  The best game this year.

    825749707

what a crazy night of Volleyball. Siegel look horrible to be honest, and cookeville played very good defense..as adverstised. They lacked offense and that was the only reason they lost.

Siegel had 2 sophmores that played great..thank goodness, otherwise this is a blowout. We had 3 Sophmores that were on the court at one time and they didn't miss a beat.

#21 for Cookeville was dominant at the net. Her offense is also good but her block is great. The future is bright for Cookeville.

The rematch at Siegel will be fun.

    25-19, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-9

  17. On backrow attacks.  In Chatt there a couple of officials who handle them expedisciously.  They save time by pretending that the rule is not in the book, they speed up the game by not calling it, when a coach stands to question why they won't call it they demand that the coach sit down immediately, THEN turn away and QUICK SERVE THEIR TEAM!  We've turned them in ..but, their love of power is so strong, they keep doing things like this when working matches for the coaches who know more than they do about the rules.

They know they refuse to learn this rule, they know some of the coaches do know the rule, and yet they still act superior about it, that's what is so laughable about their little power plays.  As if people can't see thru it.

Clifford, I used to cheat, and did so very well.  But, not anymore.  It doesn't help kids to teach them it's OK to take something they didn't earn.  Youth ahletics should build character, cheating to win does not build character.  So, I offer to you that your situation is not really about a ref's lack of knowledge, it's about a coach's and player's integrity to themselves and to the game.

    Have a good day.

    825749189

Compassion, sorry to hear that you used to have a problem with cheating. I cannot relate to that, but glad you over came those tendencies.

To relate lack of character and cheating to hitting a back row attach is crazy.

  18. Clifford20, are you saying that your team will try to get away with illegal back row attacks just because a ref won't see it?

    825748966

    [/quote

If the ball is tight or not settable--yes, but not everytime, you pick your situations with that. It does not make sense to do it as a strategy because a set and hit are more effective. However, if you as a coach know that the ref will not catch it, then it is your best interest to instruct the setter to dump it. If you get caught...loss of rally, If you don't try it...loss of rally as well because the ball will probably fall into the net, or get crushed by the other defender.

Ideally, you have a setter that will jump set the ball...but most setters around here cannot do that effectively.

But most ref's will never even catch that it is a back row attach, so you must try it.

No different then bumping a receiver in football or balking in baseball. You don't teach it, but in certain circumstances...you do it and hope you don't get caught.

  19. I get annoyed at officials that "over-call" on technique, too, ComPassion.  However, I believe there are many, many more officials that are "non-callers" than the other end of the spectrum.  Ideally, there is a place in the middle of that spectrum.  There are a few refs that I would put in that category.

I know you believe in "progressive" :thumb:  volleyball.  In other words, having a ref that is up on current rules and not stuck in the past with outdated rules.  I agree totally, however, the officiating at Red Bank was "regressive" and did nothing to better the game of volleyball.  They didn't hold to the rules of the game.  It didn't make for good volleyball.

I think you and I agree that we want officials statewide to be trained yearly on any changes to the rules and how to enforce those rules.

    825748484

here is another good one. We can get away with a back row attach against 75% of all ref's state wide. There are only a handfull of refs that will call it. So we use it to our advantage, It is so easy. I have seen teams do it, the other coach catches it, they tell the ref and they look like they have just been told that the world was ending, cause they have no idea what just happened.
