  1. Rabbitt, You make my point. I quote you "but it is hard for someone as short as him to turn people" Kyle has more trouble turning people than Gibson does. If I recall, I think Gibson took everyone down that he wrestled in the state tournament, and because he is so dominant on top which James isn't (your own words) he can pin people which James can't. Again, I am not here to say James isn't a great wrestle, you are bringing up points to support James as the most dominant wrestler, and I am clearly laying out why I think Gibson is more of a dominant wrestler and deserving of the award he received. Tex, your post was just the information I needed to support my oppinion. Thanks
  2. I thought the ultimate goal in wrestling was to Pin your opponent. To pin someone is what most wrestlers strive for and most certainly what the fans like to see. To demonstrate ones ability to not only take someone down but to be able to pin them also. I am not questioning James style of wrestling because that is what he chooses to do. I just think Gibson demonstrated a more dominant style by winning on his feet, the bottom and especially on top. A complete wrestler.
  3. TDArtist, I read this and immediately thought back to the post by cbg on the thread Dream Team. He asserted that we want to make everyone happy and make them all feel good. Let us create a division for all the Private schools, large private schools, small private schools, and even smaller private schools, large public schools, small public schools, even smaller public schools, and even very small public schools. Does this cover everybody who wants to win a championship? Probably not! It all boils down to coaches coaching the kids they have, and make the best of the situation they have. After moving down here a number of years ago, I have noticed how many coaches complain about their situations and how unfair it is. They have the theory of "Its always greener on the other side". Well it isn't. I have a close friend who coaches in California and they, the largest state, have just one state tournament for all schools which include both private, public, large schools and small schools. They are not complaining, they are very proud of their system. I think a lesson that needs to be learned here in Tennessee.
  4. Not even close. The time had expired by a minimum of 2 seconds. So to answer your question the answer is no. Not even time for an escape or loss of control.
  5. Finally getting to the board after a long day at work. Last night was exciting to watch from a spectators point of view. I agree with CBG that both schools need two officials to call this match. I remember last year there were two officials when it was at MBA, and there was a close call at the end of one match that the assistant official had to help make the call. Would have been a different outcome at 125 if there was an assistant there to help. To me it was clear that time had run out before any reversal was ever called. In fact, I didn't even see a reversal of any kind because I really didn't think there was any control by Hiller even after the call. I guess we will talk about this one for a long time.
  6. The thought of moving Simpson up to 125 against Hiller is stupid. Isn't Simpson a small 119 pounder? Not a good move for the MBA team because they will lose there. But, I will be there to watch. Any other moves of interest that might bring some excitement.
  7. I have attended many Father Ryan vs MBA matches since I moved South to Nashville. I have grown familiar to the phrase "The Pit". The last time Ryan hosted MBA it was billed as the "Match in the Pit". It didn't resemble the pit to me. All I remember was that the Ryan section of bleachers were pulled up to the edge of the mat so that the students feet were actually on the mat. The MBA section was 20 feet from the edge of the mat. I have seen Ryan move bleachers around at one end of the gym and make an actual enclosed area that was what I would call a pit. Can any Ryan fan or Irishdad comment on "The Pit". I do look forward to watching the match on Thursday night. It is one of most exciting and hard fought athletic contest I have seen down here.
  8. Who is going to win the rematch between Clarksville and Kenwood? Will Kenwood beat the mighty wildcats two times in one season? This has become one of the states best rivalries. Good luck to both programs!
  9. REFTN NOT ONLY WILL THEY LOCK IT THEY WILL TOTALLY DESTROY THE THREAD. JUST ASK STOVEPIPE. HE HAD A THREAD ASKING TO RE-OPEN THE CLOSED THREAD AND THE THREAD HAD SUPPORT TO RE-OPEN. THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN WAAABOOOOM!!!!!!!! IT IS ALL GONE. JUST LIKE THAT.
  10. bkpres That was the most intelligent comment I have read on this thread. You the man!
  11. Delawarr, you make a good point. However, you still miss the point that even you are making. Compare the two situations. Baumgartner never was that great of a wrestler in high school. Just my humble opinion, and I do have one on this because I did watch him in a few matches while he was in high school. Then eventually in college he grew much bigger and developed into a great college wrestler earning himself the title of a great college wrestler, which he truly deserved. The rest is history with his international accolades. Now to Marable which I have no intention of degrading because he doesn't deserve to be. Nick is a good high school wrestler with one win over Scott of McCallie last year. Nick does have high school credentials and I guess some would say more is expected of him now than would have been expected of Baumgartner if you compare their high school experiences. I hope I made my point clear. That is why I said "it would be a shame if we had a Cadet National Champ who hadn't won a state title." Good luck to Nick at State.
  12. Nick Marable is a good wrestle. Lets get that straight. But Nick is still trying to win his first state title, and this year is no different from the others. His title will depend on where Scott from McCallie goes at the state tournament this year. I hope he can win one before long. It would be ashame to have a Cadet National Champ without a State Title.
  13. Rabbitt, what you gona do when Kyle James graduates? You won't have anything to post anymore, unless you have another rabbitt up your sleeve! I think there are two guys that are as best here in Tennessee. Gibson of Bradley and Leen of Baylor. I saw where Leen will be going to Cornell and that is strong. Has Gibson committed to a school? If not, where is he looking to go?
  14. usfjim, Dude, I don't need to chill. It is that kind of attitude that makes this sport so unattractive to spectators. Maybe when making a schedule you shouldn't make so many matches that close together. Like football they only schedule 1 game a week. Maybe the wrestling coaches need to learn from this.
  15. Probably the best official in the state has to be Ken Mara. He is without a doubt the most knowledgeable of all. I would think the state could pay him to do referee clinics across the state to help make the younger officials better. His mat decorum is great. I have watched him officiate for a number of years, and I can hardly remember anyone having to question his calls. We need more like him!
  16. I don't know the situation between CBHS and Collierville and why they cancelled their match. I am disippointed for sure. If you want to look for reasons why wrestling can't keep its fans, you don't need to look to far now. I, for one, am frustrated at coaches who decide not to wrestle for one reason or another. PUT YOUR DARN TEAM ON THE MAT when you have a scheduled match. Wether it is your back-ups or not. You owe the fans that much for their support. What do you think would happen to the football coach if he decided to not play because his boys needed rest or had some who were injured? Probably fired! Coaches, get a grip and serve your fans and supporters with more respect than you show. It is no wonder wrestling is losing support each year.
  17. Congratulations to Centennial. They ran a good tournament. Impressed with Centennial team and how they came back to win the tournament! Great job Coach Nikazy. Smyrna made a good run at the title, and my hats off to their team also. I was surprised at the outcome of the finals at 112. The Bundy kid is on a mission! But watch out for Pair because he is very tough. Overall, great weekend of wrestling which I enjoy watching. Thanks for the entertainment.
  18. This concept was attempted in the first year of the split. It had two Middle Tenn guys backing it and fully funded the tournament. Then there were two problems. First, some coaches would not support the idea and verbally went on record as discouraging their wrestlers from this tournament. Secondly, the host school was Franklin and their principal pulled the facility out from under the two sponsors after initially agreeing to host this event. I can't explain what happened with Franklin and still don't know to this day why they pulled the facility at the end. I like the idea and would come watch. I think the problem you will run into is that when a state champion from one side is fearful of not winning the tournament they will most likely not attend. This will be in an attempt to not tarnish what he has already done. Although, I do not agree with this philosophy, I would bet you can count on it happening. So, with this likely to happen who will come to watch? Just some questions I think you should consider. I would like to see the state tournament finals happen around 2 PM on that Saturday instead of the 4 PM start. Then at 7 pm that same night bring both the state champions back for a dual meet. This way no body has to make weight again on another weekend. The facility is already rented with plenty of space and enough fans and enough action to make come back for more.
  19. Reftn, I noticed that at 215 finals, there was some confusion at the end of the 2nd period. The Brentwood Academy coach went wild because he thought his kid had choice of position to begin 3rd period and he didn't. Was there a mistake by the officials? I think the coach got a warning because he was visible upset. Over all I think the officiating went well. It must have because I haven't heard McCallie complain about it yet! Watch out for Franklin this year, they are loaded and will have more kids in the line-up by tournament time. I also don't think Davis could beat Blair even if there was a rematch. As I saw it, Davis gave everything to Blair early and even had him close to his back with some great moves but they didn't seem to faze Blair. Then Blair getting on top and absolutely dominate, and I mean DOMINATE Davis.
  20. I too was impressed with the caliber of kids at the tournament. Most impressive to me was Blair of McCallie. He was shook like a rag doll during the first period by Davis, then Blair took over in the second period destroying Davis. Davis could not even bridge off his back. I was shocked at this. I was also impressed with Hiller for complete dominace over the Overton kid. I think the move by Simpson to 119 was a good move for him. He looked big and dominated the Kenwood kid who is very good. However, I didn't see the Kenwood kid tap out when he was getting pinned! Good tournament put on by Father Ryan again. Franklin kids are tough, and are not going to do anything but get better. Watch out for Franklin by the end of the year.

    MBA?

They were impressive enough to finish third at the Ryan Inv. this weekend even without their 130 pounder this weekend. Will the kid come back this year or not? I did get to see the Sat. rounds and was impressed with some of the wrestlers. The big question is can any of these guys win the state?
  22. Just wanted to start at thread that identified the current senior wrestlers and where they will be going to college to wrestle next year. Has any senior committed yet? What are they thinking now, and where might they be going to college if they have wrestling life after high school.
  23. Congratulations to the Tennessee wrestlers. Sounds to me that if Hendricks of Ok St. wants to win a college match he needs not call on the Tennesse boys for competition. Keep up the good work Tennessee.
  24. Stove Pipe, I like what you said. Don't stay away so long next time. You add a lot to this board. I do enjoy your post on the other wrestling boards. Anyway, good to have you here.
