  1. Toss, very true post I will add that every year, each team's capability is different. Example: Last year South felt like we had the core to go a long way. This year, beating our 5A conference foes and making the playoffs would be successful.
  2. South starts the win streak tonight.... South 28 Boone 21 Go Rebels!!!!
  3. Retrenching for Friday's battle. Hoping for a knock down, drag out battle without injuries to either team. Go Rebels!
  4. I am fairly sure I used a broad stroke in illustrating our issues. I also made it clear the season isn't over yet.
  5. I have news for some of the South Rebel naysayers on this board...this season isn't over yet! We lost 23 seniors, 2/3 of which were great players, all of which were great leaders. We are rebuilding. Unfortunately, we don't have a front loaded schedule full of cupcakes. We didn't get time to work out the mistakes. Player mistakes, coaching mistakes, positioning mistakes, etc. We are having to grow up very fast and we need more leaders. We don't need captains that don't care or fans/daddys that only care about their kids. We need to stick together, pick better places to sit, and we need some kids to step up. We've been outmanned upfront in both games and are paying for it. Yes, our QB is running too much. This beats him up physically and mentally, not to mention he's too tired to throw on the run constantly. And I don't care if we have Barry Sanders in the backfield, there is nowhere to run up the gut right now. We've got to figure out how to get it in the hands of the playmakers, but we've got to have time to do it. There was a play last night where the Gville defense hit the lead back(1st fake) before the QB barely got the ball. I say "Go Rebels". Go inspite of the naysayers. Go inspite of the backbiters. Go inspite of our inexperience. I know you can do it.
  6. I think you are both correct in certain parts, but you might be missing one important factor. The QB must have time to find recievers...and he hasn't had as much as he needs. Part of this is because we lack a little size and experience up front. The other factor is that it takes him too long to scan the field, that is why he finds the tight end. He's a big, easy target. We have the recievers, just need to put it all together and that will be a challenge this week. And Crawdad is right, our TE is a TE. You don't see Witten taking handoffs either...and there is a reason. Besides, the RBs didn't run bad last week. We just didn't incorporate them enough.
  7. As for the game tonight, the above posts are pretty good...defense must be strong. I think we can move the ball. If we can limit offensive mistakes, we will score. Some underclassmen will have to step up and make some big plays tonight for us to win this one. Good luck Rebels!!!!!!
  8. Real classy and respectful....shmuck! And outsiders are supposed to believe your previous posts about South kids with your lack of integrity. Get real and grow up!
  9. Can't wait Crawdad. I just wish we started with Tn High's first 3 instead of our gauntlet. I think we have some talent, but they are certainly green. The boys have looked better each scrimmage, but the learning curve has to be steep to be ready for Knox West. Commemorative shirt, heh? Hope it looks good. That bond is definitely worth remembering.
  10. I think we all know the jamboree is for the fans. I personally enjoy getting a glimpse of our conference teams and the contests at the beginning. Sure, some teams show more than others. Some actually try getting something out of 12 minutes of live practice. Let's be honest. There will be no surprises come game time. Everyone knows what the other team plans on doing. It's about executing. It's about can you stop me even with that information. Should they play longer? Probably not. Do the fans enjoy it? 3500 paying fans answers that one. As for the money, I am not privy to how it's divided, but I assume South gets the concessions and the rest is split. And no, it shouldn't be free. Washington County may just be the beginning of the budget cuts for our area school athletic programs. Enough jamboree talk....good luck to all this season!
  11. Well, DB always dogs it. 2nd team played most of the quarter. volunteer did looked much improved...sneaky little offense kept DB a little off balance. Boone did appear a little sluggish. Good point on South/TN High tackling.
  12. Rebel 15 is JC Garvin...last year Captain Ty Garvin's younger brother...
  13. Boone beat Crockett 7-0 I think but ran clock at end South beat Tn High 14-7 in best match up DB beat Falcons handily...2nd team played a lot Hill beating Central 2 tds to zip before I left. Fastest lineman Tn High TE Downs I think Fastest back from Hill Mitchell Kicker from Tn high name? maybe punter too My preseason pick the same....DB ahead of the field. 2nd could be a barn burner with Boone early favorite due to # of upperclassmen.
  14. Anybody want to talk football? Confucious defines idiot as: someone who beats their chest because they can beat schools half their size...then loses every year in 1st round when they play in their division.
  15. Amen Core! You must've actually been at the scrimmage to acquire your data. I agree tackling was bad. I agree that we obviously aren't over conditioning. We actually had players puking after 2 plays and I didn't see the same level of fatique in Powell. I generally felt we were inconsistent. I saw great individual efforts and then turn right around and saw major individual breakdowns. Fortunately, the "Haynie Express" broke down some video and have already started making adjustments. This is a younger/less experienced squad then we've had recently, but I'm excited about their potential. Looking forward to Friday's scrimmage!! Go Rebels!!!
  16. I agree. One, although DB fans like to prod, the true fans are good people. Two, every DB grad/fan I know has a high enough IQ to "writes", "reads", "spells", "talks", better than "Otis" does.
  17. 1st or 2nd will be tough this year. As I said earlier, the conference is stacked pretty good. DB and Boone have to be the front runners pre-season. I expect SH to be much improved, but can SC turn the ship completely around in one season. Never count out TH. I will defend Boone here though...the upcoming senior class is one of the best and deepest I've seen. They can replace what they've lost.
  18. I won't give parenting advice because I don't have a dog in that race. I understand that what you stated about Riley is true...hardworking and dependable. So was Cody. What doesn't make sense then is why any of these boys would quit.... I will say that I'm sure it's hard waiting for your turn or opportunity. Riley was probably going to have to wait. Cody may/may not have started, but would've played on both sides of the ball. Water under the bridge now. Thank goodness there are many players sticking it out that will provide some great football entertainment on Friday nights for the Rebel faithful.
  19. Too early to tell about the secondary Comp. Two a days this week, then scrimmages the following Tuesday & Friday will help. I think the key with any secondary is can we pressure the QB. Any good QB with time will find an open receiver. On paper though, the secondary should be pretty good. Coach Sturgill seems to be settling in fairly quickly. He and Coach Hilton have been working closely with LBs and DBs during 7 on 7. Not sure he adds anything exceptional though, but that remains to be seen.
  20. Such negativity at this stage is depressing. My 2 cents worth: The Rebels have an uphill battle this year...we lost 23 excellent seniors. That means many underclassmen did not see much action last year and will get on the job training this year. Secondly: DB and Boone are loaded. SH always had the athletes. Now they have a coach with some discipline, so they'll be much better as well. TH is TH, always talented and this year is no different. Certainly questions abound about the success of our new Head Coach and staff and we'll see how good they are, because they didn't inherit the Rebels of 05-09. They inherited a younger, less experienced group of players. Do we have the talent to win some games? Absolutely! Do we have the talent to run the conference? I think I expressed that opinion above and certainly won't feel the coaches failed if we don't beat the above teams this year. If we lose to Central, Volunteer, and Crockett...then we've underachieved. I personally think we can pull a few upsets, but the cards have to be played perfectly. I do believe in our coaches. I trust their knowledge and definitely their integrity as men. I wish them the best. As for players quitting, I know Coach Hilton tried to talk the last athlete out of quitting. He pretty much begged and you can't beg these kids. They have to want it. Is it hard waiting? Yep! As for another kid that I know quit, mostly it's laziness. And this new generation of parent isn't very helpful to a coach's/schools cause.
  21. The scrimmage was predictable...with 6 practices, I think basic plays from the previous year is expected. Haden only had 2 practices due to baseball, so the timing stuff was predictable as well. They used a lot of players on "D", so miscommunication was expected. All in all, they looked pretty good....and "won" if you are calling winners in these. Some bright spots: we pretty much stopped their running game and we moved the ball successfully. I hope the kids work hard this summer, we stay healthy, and we fill our open coaching positions with quality candidates. Can't wait until August!!!!
  22. Big 8 and South: South should not regularly beat DB, SH, or TH regardless of coach...but they should sometimes. Everyone talks of how good they were in middle school, but think of this. One player, BD, started on 8th grade team. Logan, Tyler M, Pickwell, nor Ethan started in middle school...some rarely played. What happens at South happens at a lot of smaller schools...the kids don't want to play 3-4 sports or they just drop out altogether. Bottom line this year...South underachieved. They didn't improve much. Is this player or coach issue? Probably some of both. Does Coach P play the right game to fit his talent? Maybe not. Is player chemistry good? Not great. There never was good flow because South didn't have a true go to player. Everyone was always looking for someone else to step up. Everyone of them did at times, but no one did consistently, which is why you see games where they seemed to flounder a bit. Would I be calling for a coach's head? No. There certainly is much more to this story than him. Good luck the DB, DB, SH, TH in the regions. Represent the Big 8 well.
  23. From my distant view, South had too many turnovers, but a few at the wrong time probably cost them. Both teams played hard. SH outcome was as expected. As for tonight, the lower seeds play first. Going forward, no ones wants to be the 4th seed...MoWest awaits
