  1. Lee would have been a good choice, also. I'm sure Benny was involved with the decision.
  2. Tyler Williams was the logical choice to be named head football. He served as the Highlanders’ strength coach and offensive coordinator.
  3. I somewhat agree with what you're saying but I also understand that coaches have different mindsets for a reason. It isn't that Coach Morgan can't coach various zones, it's that he believes if each girl is doing their job defensively then man-to-man will work. I don't necessarily agree with that philosophy but he's far more knowledgeable than I am. Much has been made that he should have won more gold balls with the teams he's taken to state but playing in 7 state championship games is a solid resume by itself. He may have had the best talent or should have won more than 1 gold ball but it's not always the most talented team that wins. He has won some big games and pulled some upsets during his tenure but he seems to be judged by many merely on what he's done in the state tournament. I haven't heard anything about him retiring but it wouldn't surprise me that he might after 46 years of coaching. He may have dropped a hint in an article in the newspaper when he mentioned next years group, "Good group, great group, and they’re going to continue to work. Whether I’m there or not, they’re going to continue to work. It’s just been a joy, it really has.”
  4. If you go back to the early 90's, Meigs' girls won 2 state championships in 3 years and sent two players to Georgia and one to Tennessee.
  5. York up 2 points with 48 seconds to go in game. York is shooting an amazing 60% from the floor.
  6. I remember you saying that Alcoa would beat GP in regional play, and we even bet $100 on it. You can pay me next time I see you.
  7. I keep up with how York is doing during the season. They have a very good team, capable of going deep into state. The Mother of one of York's players played with my daughter in high school, when they won a state championship in the Christain school division. If she plays anything like her Mother, York has a gem!
  8. Coaches know they have some fans who get too enthusiastic at times. There's no guarantee that any of the teams mentioned will even make it to state. McMinn Central, for example, will have a very tough opponent in Alcoa or Gatlinburg in substate. I think it's safe to say Central will win the region championship tomorrow night, so they'll host a susbstate game Saturday against either Alcoa or Gatlinburg. Alcoa upset Central two years ago at Central in substate action and Gatlinburg beat Central at Central this year during the season, so nothing is a given for them.
  9. Gibson County will no doubt be in the mix, as will all the AA teams going to state this year. To answer your question, yes GC did hold Molly below her season scoring average, but Bystry made GC pay for double-teaming Molly. And it was Molly's outstanding defense that turned the game around for Central when the game was on the line in the 4th quarter. Her's a link to the article of the game. 10. Beating Gatlinburg again will be tough for Alcoa. Both McMinn Central and Gatlinburg coaching staffs know all too well that from here on out they have to win out to host substate. It won't be a problem for Central since no team in their Region can stay within 40 points of them. I think Central and Gatlinburg the top 2 teams in the state and both have their eyes set on winning it all this year. Obviously, Gatlinburg's region is much better. It was just 2 years ago that a 22-12 Alcoa team upset a highly favored 27-4 McMinn Central team in substate action at Central. Looking at Alcoa's schedule and game results this year, I think their recent victory over Gatlinburg was just an anomaly. It was just a couple weeks ago that Gatlinburg beat Alcoa at Alcoa 58-30. I'd imagine Central would rather play Alcoa instead of Gatlinburg since Gatlinburg has already proved they can beat Central at Central this year.
  11. I have a feeling that Alcoa only awakened a sleeping giant.
  12. He was named Offensive Coordinator of the year for two years when he was coaching for Central High in Knox County. Retired Alcoa coach (who won numerous state titles) picked Nathan to be his offensive coordinator when he took the reigns two years ago at Boyd-Buchanan. Last season they went undefeated and lost to CPA in the state championship game. Given some time and player development into his system, he'll build a solid team for Meigs! edit: I don't know which current assistant coaches he'll retain (no doubt he'll want to keep Baker), or how many he'll want to bring in. Did some of Bunch's assistants go to Sweetwater with him?
  13. This is a homerun hire! I've known Nathan since he was in middle school. He's a well-rounded young Christian man who has worked his way up by coaching under some awesome head coaches.
  14. Great hire for Sweetwater. He was offered the job last year and declined.
  15. According to someone who was there: Central came out prepared and on fire and CC couldn't match the tempo and trailed 30-14 at halftime. Central's intensity continued throughout the second half.
  16. Central played at GP this past Friday night, so the next game will be at Central. The girls' game was nip and tuck but I think Central won by about 5. Both are good teams that should make it to State. I'll be at Meigs Friday night when they host Central. I haven't seen the Meigs girls play yet, but from looking at box scores it looks like more girls are getting playing time this year. Of course that might have been against teams where they had a good lead?
  17. You are correct. Franklin got Vanderbilt involved with some highly-rated prospects through donors paying players (illegally) and on paper his classes were top-25 types. Franklin also persuaded Vanderbilt - through powerful Vandy alums - to lower their academic standards in order to get some questionable recruits enrolled. When he left, more than half of the players he had lined up to enroll in 2014 de-committed or didn't meet academic protocol. Mason refused to do anything illegal or allow donors to buy players, and he adhered to academic standards established at Vanderbilt. Mason may not be the answer for MTSU but I wouldn't count him out.
  18. It was close but I couldn't tell with the camera angles.
  19. Total brainfart on Upperman's special team players. Wow!
  20. PC is very talented, but also undisciplined.
  21. Good response by Upperman. Let's see if they can stop PC from keeping the ball and scoring.
  22. PC's linemen totally dominating Upperman's.
  23. Dumb fake punt for Upperman coach to call. Just plain dumb!
