  1. This game was an absolute war. Both teams left it all on the field and there was some serious hitting going on all night long. What made this a joy to watch was that there were numerous times where each team would help the other up after a big hit and pat each other on the head etc. Two programs that showed class and respect for one another all night.

ECS came out and drove the ball down to get a quick field goal after Webb's defense stiffened. Webb's first possession ended with a fake punt in their own territory that was unsuccessful after barely missing a wide open receiver who was overthrown. ECS capitalized by scoring on the short field and made it 10-0 with all the momentum. Webb scored 21 unanswered points on the running of not only the Blance brothers but the third RB Berube who made some huge runs to keep the ECS defense off-balance. The score was 21-10 to start the 4th quarter. ECS scored with 5 minutes to go to make it 21-16 but after receiving the kickoff, Caleb Blance ran the fullback trap 71 yards for the score to make it 28-16. ECS would not quit and scored to make it 28-23 with 2 minutes left. ECS attempted an onside kick that failed and Webb drove the ball down to the ECS 2 yard line. The ECS defense kept the Spartans out of the endzone by stuffing two plays from the 2 and took over with less than a minute and no timeouts. The Webb defense shut down the Eagles final drive without them crossing midfield as time expired. This was one of the best games I've seen in a long time. Both teams went all out and brought their best and ECS just came up a little bit short.

The ECS offense was fun to watch as they ran their no-huddle attack with 3 different QBs through the course of the game. I was really impressed with their young QB Rooker who made some very nice throws and was elusive too. The Jamison cousins were a factor as expected with both making some plays although the speed of Webb's defense limted Will from really hurting the Spartans too much. Childers ran tough but was hit hard just about every time he was tackled and it appeared to take a toll. I was very impressed with the ECS receiver #84. He's a big target and can catch and run very well. ECS had a couple other WRs that were solid too.

The ECS defense was tough up the middle and did a good job of holding the Blance brothers in check however they found out the hard way if you give them the slightest opening they will make you pay and both Caleb and Aaron took advantage of those opportunities.

The Spartans played pretty well on defense and held the ECS offense to just over 300 yards. Although they gave up 225 passing yards, they came up huge with 3 interceptions. Most of the passes were underneath and Webb's young secondary stepped up and didn't allow much of anything to be completed downfield. Webb's LBs were very active and laid some big licks all night long. One of the interceptions was made by LB Carter on a one-handed grab that was a game changer after ECS took a 10-0 lead. The d-line did a great job of battling to free the LBs and played a huge part of keeping Childers in check and holding ECS to less than 100 yards rushing.

On offense the Spartans stayed with their plan and never got rattled. The limited passing game was not working so they relied on what they do best and that's run the ball behind their o-line that executes their blocks with precision. The Blance brothers had a big night Caleb (165 yards, 2 TDs) and Aaron (115 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 100+ return yards). Webb's third RB had a big night as well. Berube made some very nice runs to keep ECS off-balance as they focused on the Blance brothers and ended the night with close to 100 yards rushing himself.

Hats off the the ECS team and coaches who did a very good job last night. I'm sure it was a bitter loss especially for the seniors as they were put out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year by the Spartans. Keep your heads up, you played and competed with class. Hats off to your fans who traveled in mass from Memphis and were vocal the entire game. Hope everyone made it home safely.

Way to go Spartans, you now have earned the chance to defend last years' State Championship in Cookeville. Win the last game and finish the job. I can't wait to be in Cookeville and watch you compete for the gold ball!

Great recap. Real class was shown by both teams on the field. I want to also thank the Webb decision makers who allowed the ECS team and community to support their players on the field for what will be for many, their last game. You were gracious in giving us all the time we needed to console, congratulate and cry with one another. You kept the lights on for us until the end and we appreciate it.

  2. Not saying that couldn't hack it, but pretty obvious to everyone that them as well as ECS moved down to win the state in football. If you don't think so, you are being nieve.

Knox Webb couldn't hold a candle to the heavyweights in DII-AA.

Neither Webb nor ECS "moved down" as you suggest. They "chose" not to play up based on their enrollment classification set by the TSSAA. For example Powell and Knox West are not "choosing" to play up with 6A nor should they with their enrollment. If you really want to get it right, get rid of all classifications like it used to be.

  3. Sometimes Houston is listed as "Germantown - Houston High School", but there is a "Germantown High School" as well, so usually everyone drops the "Germantown" when referring to "Houston High School" to avoid just this type of confusion.

For those that do go way back you may be familiar with who the Ridgeway coach was at that time.....and the 11-2 score won't be a surprise.

  4. The Commercial Appeal's Top 5 looks pretty good. Others that may creep in the top 5 during the year include Briarcrest, St. Mary's, ECS and White Station.

  5. Congratulations to Chandler Gagnon (ECS) 2010 Pepsi Commercial Appeal Best of the Prep Boys Soccer

Also, Olivia Harrison (Houston) on the girls' side.

.....and to Matthew Sims who was named Scholar-Athete of the Year from St. George's. Great soccer player as well as basketball and golfer and headed to University of Michigan.

  6. Very poor list of finalists. Usually they miss out on one or so, but this list is sad. In 2008, four of the five were not arguable, with the 4 being the legitimate best 4 players in the city. In 2009, the list was okay but Dennis Kennetz should have been a finalist, no question. This year, they got 2 right.

Which 3 that aren't on here would you recommend?

  7. MUS ONLY HAS JOSEPH LEVY COMING BACK. HE EVEN SAYS THAT THEY WILL STINK NEXT YEAR. CBHS CLEARLY HAS MORE THAN PAUL BANKS.WHEN THEY PLAYED MUS WITHOUT HIM THEY LOST 2-0 WITH HIM THEY LOST 3-1. THEY ALSO HAVE SAM WILSON, STEVIE REDDICK,MATT ROBERTS AND CHRIS GIRDEAU EVENTHOUGH HE IS SORT OF A CRY BABY. BRIARCREST,ST. GEORGES, AND ST. BENEDICT WILL BE TERRIBLE . ECS SHOULD STILL BE GOOD.THEIR WEAK SCHEDULE SHOULD HELP THEM.

Stevie outside of the teams in the division they must play, ECS beat Kingsbury (state qualifier); tied Collierville (state qualifier); tied White Station (state qualifier); and beat CBHS 2-1. The only state qualifier from their region they didn't play was MUS. Please supply their weak schedule for next year didn't know it was out yet.

  8. Madison vs. Boyd 4:30

    CAK vs. CPA 7:00

    Alcoa vs. CCS 5:00

Kingsbury vs. Martin Luther King 7:30

    Interesting brackets.

The CCS vs. Alcoa game should be a hot one! CCS is rocking right now, and with Alcoa knocking them out last year, I'll bet they are gonna be ready to play! Should be a great match!

I love playing CPA. Great coach, great fans, and a quality team. Can't wait!

Got to go with Boyd, CAK, CCS and Kingsbury to advance.

  9. A

    Webb vs JCS

    St Georges vs ECS

    AA

    JP2 vs CBHS

    MUS vs McCallie

Webb vs JCS - predict JCS win

St Georges vs ECS - too close to call, edge to St Georges as they haven't given up a goal in playoffs

JP2 vs CBHS - predict CBHS win

MUS vs McCallie - too close to call, edge to MUS as they haven't given up a goal in playoffs

Gatorade honors ECS star Chandler Gagnon

Junior named Tenn. soccer Player of Year

    By Jason Smith

    Friday, May 7, 2010

It had been nine years since a Memphis-area boys soccer player was named Gatorade Tennessee Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

That drought ended Thursday when Evangelical Christian School junior midfielder Chandler Gagnon, one of the nation's top prospects in the Class of 2011, was named Tennessee's best player.

"My dad, all throughout my soccer career, has told me not to expect things," Gagnon said. "He was like, 'You're probably not going to get this (award) because you're only a junior. They'll probably give it to a senior.'

"So I wasn't thinking about it too much, and I was surprised when I got it. I mean, I was happy. I knew that I was capable of getting it, but I didn't know if I'd be able to or not."

Gagnon, whom TopDrawerSoccer.com rates the No. 20 overall recruit in 2011, is the first Memphis-area player to win the award since Houston's Michael Vogel in 2001.

Only five local players have earned the honor since its start in 1986-87. Gagnon is the first area junior to win the award.

This season, the 6-2, 175-pound Gagnon has registered 16 goals and 17 assists in leading ECS to an 11-0-3 record and the No. 2 ranking in The Commercial Appeal's Dandy Dozen.

"(Gagnon) is one of the most skilled and experienced players I've seen in many years," ECS soccer coach Ryan Lutz said. "His school, his teammates, my coaching assistants and I are very glad for him to have received this honor from Gatorade."

Gagnon, who has a 3.06 GPA, is a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer 1993 Region III Olympic Development Program team. He's considering attending either SMU, Indiana, South Carolina, Tulsa or the University of Memphis.

"You can put Chandler wherever," Tennessee Olympic Development Program coach Jon Baker said.

"He's good in the air, a very confident player. As a center back, he can carry the ball forward. He's not just a guy who wins the ball and drives it forward. He's looking to carry it forward into play."
