  1. Is Rankin back at center? I thought he was a very scrappy player who got after it when watching him last year against Milan.
  2. Alcoa lost in 2001 to Goodpasture in the State Semifinals 17-13. That is hardly what I would call a "debacle" now APB. Close matchups are what take place generally in the State Semifinals. After all wasn't it Marion County who nearly knocked off the Tornadoes in the State Semifinals back in 2008? Fast Forward to 2003: Now this is an example of a "debacle" my friend. That Saturday night State Semifinal loss to David Lipscomb by a score of 55-6 was a total "debacle". It can't be described in any other way, shape, or form. Now With That Said..... That loss to David Lipscomb was quite possibly the catalyst which has since led Alcoa to win 6 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in a row. As fate would have it Alcoa got their rematch with David Lipscomb the following year in the State Semifinals in Nashville. The Tornadoes went on to win that game going away. Outside of the Marion County matchup in the State Semifinals in 2008 there is not one example of a State Semifinals/State Championship Game where I truly felt that Alcoa has been pushed by an opponent. In every case the games have been pretty well decided by the 4th Quarter. The 2003 "debacle" against David Lipscomb was quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to Alcoa football from a motivation standpoint. I still would not refer to the 2001 loss to Goodpasture as a "debacle" however....
  3. Hey MOTO24: I don't know how long the Cubs "starters" will play in the jamboree against the Red Devils on Saturday evening. I am sure that I do not have to remind you that Cubs starting running back Shaun Montgomery suffered a terrible knee injury last year in the jamboree matchup against Jo Byrns. Right now I would expect the Cubs coaches to try and get 1 good series out of both their offense and defense. If there is a short series (either a 3 & out or a long touchdown allowed) then I would expect a 2nd series. Overall though I look for the "starters" to see limited action in this one. Can't wait to see Jo Byrns in person this upcoming weekend. The same goes for Greenbrier, Fairview, White House-Heritage, Springfield, & East Robertson
  4. I just read where Metro Nashville Public Schools have cancelled all afternoon activities for the remainder of this week due to the scorching heat. I am sure that this means the Smith County vs Glencliff scrimmage is now CANCELLED as a result. Does this mean that we'll NOW be seeing some Smith County coaches, players, and fans at this Friday's scrimmage between Cheatham County-Fairview?
  5. Wade, at least wear the camo shorts that you got called out on in 2004 at Montgomery Central High School during the Regional Basketball Championship Matchup when Giles County played Sycamore.
  6. I will try to find out for sure but Phil Carr won between 480-500 games as the girls basketball coach at CCCHS over the last two decades I would be willing to bet. He is Cheatham County Basketball in my opinion and will be missed more than anyone could ever begin to know.
  7. How did Lipscomb look today against Sycamore?
  8. That is the way that Mike Jarreau Field is set up scooter. Hope to see a large crowd of Smith County fans there for sure. At the end of this season the stadium is finally being rennovated and in 2011 there will be bleachers on both sides. The stadium has been the same since it opened in 1970. I want to encourage the Smith County fans who arrive early to stop and grab a bite to eat at Stratton's Diner. You will enjoy it for sure!
  9. That same "vanilla offense" hung an average of 28 points per game on the Gordonsville Tigers in 2 matchups. I would hate to think of what that would make your defense..........lol Smith County scrimmages Glencliff (Friday), DCA (next Tuesday), and plays in the Cookeville Jamboree (next Saturday)
  10. I promised myself I would not "butt in" here but I just couldn't help myself croz6110. The year before that you ask about was 2007 and that year you beat a team with 4 seniors (Jerry Henry, Brandon Theriault, Bo Chandler, Kyle Smith) by a score of 27-20. In 2008 I assure you that I am well aware that Gordonsville was in a very similar position as Cheatham County was in 2007. Cheatham County didn't just win 27-20 however.....the final score was 35-0! In 2009 Cheatham County had 3 seniors (Brady White, Randall Greer, Jameson Ragsdale). In 2010 Cheatham County will have 5 seniors (Shaun Montgomery, Tanner Owen, Aeron Bess, Aubrey Louallen, Spencer Krantz). I would have liked to see Gordonsville remain on the schedule. As things are however Smith County is on the schedule and we are very proud to have the opportunity to play those guys to kick off yet another great season of HSF action. The Cubs are still a very young football team as well. Hopefully the Owls won't have the "mercy rule" in effect by halftime this year. Maybe our coaches will open up the playbook and run the "Annexation of Puerto Rico" this year since last year's play calling was way too conservative in the eyes of some in attendance.
  11. Station Camp scrimmages Pearl-Cohn today (Tuesday August 3rd) and on Friday August 6th they scrimmage Whites Creek. Those 2 tests should be good tests. I know I saw the Bison back during the spring when they went early and scrimmaged Cheatham County and they looked like a team with a lot of potential on that night. Of course it is very hard to gauge teams during spring scrimmages.
  12. Well the secret is out that Cheatham is now running the "Tony Franklin" Offense. I also saw where Montgomry Central has gone to the "Wing-T" Offense. Hope everyone else is having a good preseason. I know that during the first week: Harpeth scrimmaged Nashville Christian Stewart County scrimmaged Northwest Cheatham County scrimmaged Hickman County Creek Wood scrimmaged Marshall County Waverly Central scrimmaged Adamsville Montgomery Central did not scrimmage anyone I also know that this week: Harpeth scrimmages East Literature Stewart County scrimmages White House-Heritage Cheatham County scrimmages Fairview Montgomery Central scrimmages Northeast Hope that everyone is enjoying a relatively save fall with no "major" injuries (as I am sure every team has the small bumps & bruises that come along during the practices of fall camps).
  13. It was at Harpeth. How did it go?
  14. How did everybody fare yesterday? I know that Cheatham got some good work accomplished against Hickman County. How did Waverly Central look against Adamsville? How did Harpeth look against Nashville Christian? How did Creek Wood look against Marshall County? Also anyone with any updates on Stewart County and Camden Central feel free to share them and keep us informed. Montgomery Central did not have a scrimmage this week. They go with Clarksville-Northeast next week. Stewart County goes with White House-Heritage, Harpeth goes with East Literature, & Cheatham goes with Fairview. SEASON IS JUST 3 WEEKS AWAY!!!!!
  15. That sounds fair to me bigdaddy67. If the great minds on the Cheatham County School Board are under the impression that athletics is not an important thing in the county then I would like to invite them all to be in Pleasant View on the night of September 10th at 7:30 p.m. I believe the # of people in the stands will speak for itself.
  16. If this was meant towards the Cubs then I can assure you that some members of last year's team are gone but overall the poor attitudes of some older players were not the issue. The fact of the matter was that the young guys were just better and when they got the opportunity to play once "postseason hopes" were dashed in Week 7 then they really played hard and competed. 2 of those last 3 games that they competed so hard in were against 9-1 teams Creek Wood & Camden Central. I will not get on here and shoot off at the mouth and say "Smith County is not going to beat the Cubs by 40 this year" because they very well could. I do know that the players on the field will look very different to the Owls. #'s 15, 23, 51, 68, 21, 7, 6, 71, & 58 will still be enrolled at CCCHS absolutely HOWEVER they will not be on the football team (at least not the same kids). #'s 31, 55, & 34 were the trio of seniors who graduated from last year's team. I have always said that "you are what the #'s say you are". With that having been said right now the Cheatham County Cubs are a 1-9 football team. There is nothing that can be said to "sugar coat" that fact. Smith County is a State Quarterfinalist team that was just 1-POINT away from being in the State Semifinals. They had some very impressive wins last year against the likes of DeKalb County, White House, & Pearl-Cohn. They did lose some very good seniors. #'s 7, 30, 13, & 51 were all outstanding football players. They also had some very good linemen walk the line and receive diplomas this spring. THEY WILL STILL BE SMITH COUNTY IN THE END THOUGH!!!! This means that they'll be physical and come out and play from the snap to the whistle. Coach Maynord is a great coach. He learned a lot from Coach Rankin and his used it to enjoy plenty of success. Yes, that is the same Coach Rankin who is arguably the best coach to grace a sideline in TN State HSF History. Bad Attitudes were around absolutely however that is not the excuse as to why the Cubs were 1-9 last year. It's a tall task to compete on Friday nights with 14-15 year old playing against 17-18 year olds week in and week out. I don't care if Vince Lombardi is coaching them!
  17. The Owls will be very prepared that is for certain. Scrimmages against larger schools such as Wilson Central & Glencliff will be good tests and the jamboree against Cookeville is just more of the same. I also believe that I heard Smith County scrimmages D.C.A. as well. The Cubs are very aware of how good Smith County is. Coach Maynord is a top notch coach and his teams always come to play. I'm sure all that the Cubs would want is to survive and to get a 1st Down in this year's matchup and not get beat 40-0.
  18. Love It!!!! Let the trash talking begin....
  19. Macon County is going to be much improved but the old saying says "you must first learn how to win before success comes". I think that they will be competitive but I just can't bet against a team as good as Trousdale County. I'll say Yellow Jackets by 10.
  20. 26 applications is much more than I would have expected at this point. Does anyone have any info on any of the interested candidates?
  21. Can't wait to see the Owls in Ashland City in 33 days
  22. I had no idea that the quarterback from Cannon County moved back to Georgia. I picked him on the preseason all-state team this year. I am sorry to hear that he will not be playing football in the state of Tennessee this year. He was a fine player. I would pick Smith County to win the district. They lose Johnston and some good linemen on both sides of the football as well as 2 outstanding linebackers in Tongate and Brey but they will still be very well coached. Wakefield's return from injury will help them tremendously and Pinson is still there as a solid player at linebacker. Joshua Johnston is also back. He is the best receiver/defensive back in this entire district easily. While some joke about Livingston Academy from 2006-2008 there would have been a LOT of teams that would have failed in the region they were playing in at that time. Fulton & Knoxville Catholic were powerhouses during that period of time and both Austn East & Anderson County weren't too shabby either. When Joel Schrenk left Northwest to take this job I was even laughing but after the job he did last year I think people are going to take the folks in Hog Eye Country a bit more seriously this season. The job that Steve Trapp has done at DeKalb County may be the best coaching job in the entire state over the course of the last 5 years. He was hired as a Jr. Pro coach to lead a high school football program. Hunter Poteete & Abram Edwards are guys who 20 years later are going to be remembered as LEGENDS for the accomplishments they achieved on the gridiron to help revive an awful program in Smithville. It would be INSANE to expect DeKalb County to simply replace those guys this season. I think this is going to be a rebuilding year for the Tigers.
  23. idk what the big "secret" is here. The season is just 48 days away. Quit posting in "code" and just come out and say it
  24. Greenbrier is a Top 10 caliber team this year. They return a lot from last year's team. I think they are deserving to be on this list. At the same time however this is still a very good list. All of those teams are going to be very good this season.
  25. Don Thomas has resigned and followed the principal to Lincoln County. He is now the odds on favorite to succeed Thompson as the head coach there upon his retirement. Who takes over as the next head coach at Marshall County? William Johnson & Don Thomas were both brought in as "sexy name" coaches. Johnson came from Stratford where he had won a pair of region titles. In 2 years (2005 & 2006) he qualified for the playoffs once and won 0 POSTSEASON GAMES. Thomas, who coached at Lee (AL) and LaVergne, followed and coached for 3 years (2007, 2008, & 2009). In those years he qualified for the playoffs twice and won 1 POSTSEASON GAME. I can't help but wonder "what if?" when thinking about Marshall County. I always said following the 2004 season that Tommy Tharp should have been named the head football coach there. He was a proven winner and would have been in it for the long haul had he just gotten the opportunity. Instead though Mac McCurry left and the program was in serious turmoil, William Johnson came in and was later found to be a guy carrying excessive baggage, and then Don Thomas came in but it has always been known that he was just a short term solution and really one day wanted to go back and coach in Fayetteville. Tharp in the meantime has coached in both Alabama & Louisiana. I don't know when exactly however I do expect him to eventually return to middle Tennessee to coach one day down the road. Could this hiring be that "day"? Something needs to change that is for certain. From 2000-2002 Marshall County was a Top 5 caliber Class 3A team in the state. They compiled an overall record of 30-7 during that time, won the region all 3 of those years, and also advanced to the State Quarterfinals in both 2000 & 2002. Since that time however things have gone SOUTH. In the last 7 years Marshall County has and overall record of 37-40 and during that time they've won just 2 playoff games total. The early 00's started as a decade where surely you would have thought Marshall County would win a state title. Instead though what has happened is disappointment and in the meantime long time rival Giles County has emerged into a very good football program that just captured a state title.
