  1. I hate blaming refs - if you’re good enough, bad calls won’t lose the game for you. There’s been a lot of speculation on the on-side kick, so here is the video footage so you can judge for yourself. There are dozens of missed blocks, dropped passes, poor tackles and missed coverages that cause a team to lose a game. This play didn’t lose the game for the Bees whether it was the right or wrong call - just wanted everyone to be able to see it for themselves since it’s the topic of so much conversation today On Side Kick
  2. Alcoa appeared to have a player suffer a substantial arm injury last night. Prayers for him if he did and for any of their families who may have been in the wreck after game on 56. The Bees will definitely be there cheering for you on Saturday at 3.
  3. Great game for the Tornadoes. I’m sure you’ll be bringing home number 17 next weekend. Glad we kept the game at the Hive because our seniors deserved to play one last game on their home field with their home crowd. We play a lot of teams every year and I want to thank you for being great and respectful fans. Have a safe trip back to East Tennessee and we will be there cheering for you at Tech next week. My son’s a junior, so hoping we get far enough to meet you in Alcoa next year. Nobody was giving our kids a shot before the game - a lot didn’t even think we’d score. We are going home with a loss tonight, but I wouldn’t be any prouder of that group of kids if they’d won by three touchdowns. When a group of country boys from Baxter step on the field with Alcoa and give it all every play all night long, they have earned my respect. I had two kids on the 2013 team - great group who’ve done well in life since leaving Upperman. I am sure these seniors will do the same.
  4. Agreed - it could be an advantage - around 3,500 possible kids to pull from county-wide. You'd think some of the 75 kids on Ckvl's freshmen team would want to change to a program where they could get actual playing time before they're juniors or seniors, but it doesn't happen often. That may be because Upperman didn't have a region championship between 1996 and 2013 and had almost all losing seasons - nobody wants to move to a program that isn't successful. That may change some with the 2013, 2015 and 2018 region titles coming to Baxter. The girls' basketball program is drawing some interest from the middle school players in Cookeville since they got their back to back gold balls. We know families from Putnam County who have moved their kids to Knoxville to play in Maryville/Alcoa. Everyone wants to come be a part of a program with a winning tradition where their kid can get better and get visibility if he's good.
  5. It doesn't work that way around here. Technically, you can go to either of the three high schools, but roots run deep. Most in Cookeville would die before they let one of their kids go to school in Baxter or Monterey, and the same is true about kids moving to Cookeville. You go where yo' mama raised ya'. We do tend to show up and support the others when it's time. Monterey made it to semis a couple years ago and everyone in Baxter was there cheering for them, but I don't recall over a dozen transfers in either direction in the twenty years I've been around - yeah, I'm older than dirt. Houses going up everywhere though if you decide you want to live closer to Ralph's.
  6. No - season passes but on reserved seating. They do sell reserved parking.
  7. There’s no one in Baxter that wouldn’t welcome you to come over and sit right beside them. We may not cheer for the same team but we are always hospitable. Don’t worry though - we didn’t have the cow pile bingo fundraiser this year, so there won’t be cow crap to wade through to get to the stands - and we have the goats and pigs fenced up over by the Ag building.
  8. High schools in Putnam County aren’t “hard-zoned” and kids can attend Monterey, Cookeville or Upperman. However, you do have to live in Putnam County. There isn’t a tuition option to attend school in Putnam County if you don’t live there and if you need transportation, you have to attend the school you are zoned to attend. I don’t think that’s the reason they don’t have a state championship though. CHS has to be one of the largest 6A schools in the state.
  9. Totally agree. I’m sure the TSSAA looks more closely at their rosters than anyone’s. Success breeds success. Kids in towns with championship programs grow up working and wanting to be a part of it. The next generation of champions are being trained in the pee-wee youth programs there now. You can’t argue with success. You try to recognize it and replicate it in your own program.
  10. The Whistle Stop Pizzeria in down town Baxter has great food.
  11. We will make sure to have you some butter twists in concessions. Just ask whoever is working.
  12. Well, we’d love to have turf instead If you have any spare change up your way. It was really wet and muddy the last two weeks. My kid looked like he’d been in a mud bath. Hoping the dryer weather forecast for later this week will help. Didn’t see a lot of kids slipping and falling on pass routes or runs though.
  13. The bad part of that is the gate split. 50% for TSSAA and 25% for each team. Upperman hosted Louden and they didn't even bring one fan per player - doubt that there were many more in the stands than were on the pass list. York brought a huge crowd for the regular season game, but only about half of that for the Round 2 playoff game - possibly due to the weather. Home stands have been packed for both games. Hoping Red Bank travels better this week, but I've heard they don't. Hope we can beat them and host Alcoa in the semis - no doubt they will bring a crowd to Baxter.
  14. There was that one year that one of the teams' bus drivers was arrested for DUI when he arrived at the Blue Cross Bowl....
  15. Always a pleasure to watch Rankin and his team play - just hoping it's Putnam County they're coming to next Friday night.
  16. http://tssaa.org/about/board-of-control/ Since the principal at Sequatchie is on the TSSAA Board of Control, you'd think he would be very diligent about checking the records of kids transferring in who are playing sports - especially since the incident last year was widely publicized and I'm sure reviewed by the TSSAA at the time.
  17. Probably is since their permanent records indicated that they had to be placed in alternative school and it's the school administration's responsibility to review those when accepting new students.
  18. Yeah - makes sense. I mean, clapping and cheering after you've just made a defensive stop on 4th down after a long sustained drive where the other team's fans have "taunted" you for the whole drive is absolutely worse than attempted aggravated rape of a teammate. In Putnam County, kids assigned to alternative school aren't allowed to participate in sports or any other activities at any of the three "regular" high schools. Is that different in other places?
  19. Upperman is hoping you do too. Maybe they’ll sell some Ralph’s donuts and coffee in concessions so you don’t have to drive all the way into town.
  20. Sucks for the kids on the team who didn't do anything wrong, but how does the TSSAA not penalize them for playing kids that were supposed to be ineligible when they've penalized other programs for things much less serious than this? Were they just on the team or did they actually play in the varsity games?
  21. Makes sense that after charges that serious, they shouldn't have been allowed to be a part of the regular student body or play sports of any kind.
  22. Just as an FYI - Upperman isn't a place. He's a deceased philanthropist. Nobody lives in Upperman (at least not in Putnam County - unless some teachers are sleeping in the school).
  23. Promise you that nobody watches more film in a week than the UHS coach does. Never seen a high school coach who works more hours than him. This will be a great game - close either way. Upperman has some athletes just like York - this one may be won in the trenches. The line play will be critical for both teams. I think the Bees may have a slight advantage with the game being in Baxter and all players back at 100 percent this week.
  24. I can confirm, it was wet on both sides of the field. Upperman stats 2/3 passing for 43 yards, 29 carries for 311 yards averaging 10.7 yards per carry. Sequatchie stats aren't loaded in Maxprep yet, so I don't know how they compare. Before the game, the edge was being given to Sequatchie due to the wet field impacting the UHS passing game. That was the case - this was the fewest attempted passes by the team all season. Both teams were solid with coaches making decisions based on the weather and their players' strengths. Both teams had offensive players slipping down and defensive players who weren't able to make cuts when trying to make tackles. Hoping it's dry for Week One playoff games and everyone is healed and ready to go.
