  1. The answer to this question depends on the positioning of the defender. If the defender is attempting to make a tackle on the ball carrier and has left his feet (diving at the runner) no penalty for hurdling. However, if the defender is on his feet, if the runner attempts to jump over the defender, you could have a hurdling situation. I personally have seen this penalty called 1 time in my games in the last 8 years. You could have a situation of hurdling by a defensive player on a field goal attempt as well. Defender "jumps" over an offensive lineman attempting to block the try - could be a hurdling situation. If a runner hurdles a defender as you asked - hurdling is defined in the NFHS rules book, so it is a penalty based on my brief explanation above.
  2. Not an unsportsmanlike penalty - illegal equipment penalty.
  3. Congrats to both teams for making to the championship game. No prediction on who will win. I just don't mess with it. This game will be decided on the field. Matchups will be key this week. I am not talking about which fan base can claim more trophies or which fan base can talk the most trash or smack. This game will be about 15-18 year old lads laying all out on the field come Friday at noon. I have seen JB play several times this year. In my opinion, this could be the most complete 1A team since TC in 2008. I have not had the pleasure to witness SP play this year. I think that both teams will be seeing things that they have not seen all year. This might come down to coaching and game time adjustments. Good luck to both teams....represent your teams and communities with HONOR. No matter who wins or who loses, both teams have made their communities and schools proud.
  4. No problem CB. I am not arguing either way, just putting some facts out there. I appreciate your input as well. Regular season for both teams is what it is...TSSAA makes the districts. If costs were not the primary concern of the TSSAA, I would love to see a "super region" with mTp, CW, WC, JB, etc. I think it would improve the quality of football in 1A in this area more than anything else. It would also eliminate the weaker/stronger schedule arguments.
  5. Some could argue then that JB has played a tougher PLAYOFF schedule than PC.
  6. Common Opponents Perry County 50 Wayne County 48 Jo Byrns 28 Wayne County 14 Perry County 40 Collinwood 35 Jo Byrns 28 Collinwood 14 JB scored less than PC, but also gave up fewer points. Not trying to argue either way, just stating facts. These 2 common opponents will not mean squat on Friday night. Which team played the tougher or weaker schedule will not matter. It will be about how these 2 teams stack up against each other....The winner will definately deserve to be in the championship game.
  7. Moto24, are you going to the game Friday? Would like to meet you and talk football. I enjoy discussing rules and opinions and not often do i get a chance to do that with most JBS fans...me beinf a ref and my wife teaches at JBS, so I try to keep a low profile most of the time...Anyways, let me know.

  8. Interesting stats...... Perry County Points Scored Season 473 average of 39.42/game Points Allowed Season 179 average of 14.92/game Jo Byrns Points Scored Season 483 average of 40.25/game Points Allowed Season 78 average of 6.50/game On paper, Jo Byrns defense wins. But, anything can happen on any Friday night. This should be one of the best games this Friday. I think I would rather see this game than any of the larger classifications. No prediction on who wins....I think it comes down to defense. Which team can stop the other from doing what they have done all season. I do not think either team will win by more than 14, then again, I cannot tell the future.
  9. Back Judge has the primary call of the early hit with help from sideline official. Maybe the ref was shielded by another player or not in correct potion to make the call. If he was there early should have been DPI. Any cussing by any player is automatic unsportsman foul. I was told of the coach placing his hand on the shoulder of the ref...it was the second or third flag. I think the f bomb was the first flag.
  10. Completely agree with you....The crew at last week's game Red Bank @ Maplewood....one official was under the age of 55. They were out of position and could not run to get into position to be able to make a correct call. Half of the job of an official is to be in the right place to be able to make the call. Every official has a pet peeve also. I personally look for holding on the edge more than any other infraction. We as officials will never please all of the fans, coaches and players all of the time. You must have thick skin, be able to not hear the fans, and call the fouls as they happen, does not matter which team it goes against.
  11. Do you have some more information on the play at the end of the half? I kind of remember but a little fuzzy. I did not get a good look at the WR and CB on the sidelines. Was there jersey pull? Jersey pull should be hold, if in the ref's opinion both players are tussling for position with no advantage gained either way, no call. No pass interference on defense until ball has left QB's hand. No matter if a call is missed or called in error, no reason to touch an official. Official threw 2 flags on the coach at the same time. One for what he said and one for contact with the official. Then a third came in for something else that was said. I would have preferred to see if WC would have scored and then the onside kick. WC players deserved the chance to try to score twice in a minute.
  12. It seems that the TSSAA could use a few more people like you that are willing to become great officials. I can point you to the correct people in your area if you have what it takes.
  13. Back judge threw the flag, he was in position to see the JB player who had inside position holding the right arm of the WC player. The linejudge who was on the JB sideline could not see any of the contact - all he could see was the backs of both players. There is no 5 yard rule in high school. Defensive pass interference can only happen while the ball is in the air after the QB's release.I might have preferred a holding call instead of DPI but both would result in the same, half the distance to the goal and automatic first down. I know and work with everyone of the officials from tonight's game. Back judge officiates for the OVC - it was an excellent crew of officials. The JBS fans could use a little dose of humility....when an opposing team actually produces a positive play, it might be that the team did well instead of the refs missed a call....just an observation.
  14. I attended the game....just a few thoughts.... I think that the Rice brothers could play for any team in middle TN. If they were at larger schools instead of 1A, several colleges would be looking at them. They are better than advertised. Pass interference call against JB in first quarter was absolutely the correct call. Does not matter that the ball was uncatchable in the opinion of several fans. There is no such thing as an uncatchable pass in high school football. Holding calls on WC in the second quarter were correct calls. If you do not want to get flagged for holding, either do not pull the jersey away from the body of the defender or do a better job of concealing it. It started to irritate me seeing QB Rice try to lobby the official to reverse the penalty on every flag that was thrown. End of the game situation.....I think that it very poor for the WC coaches , fans, and players to allow a game to upset them so much that water bottles are launched onto the field. For the actions of the coaches and fans to eliminate any chance that WC had to score and then try for an onside kick, ruined the great play on the field. I will remember this game not for the play on the field but for the 3 unsportsman like conduct penalties in a row on the coaches/bench followed by a personal foul on the WC player looking for cheap shot. I have never seen anything before that resembled the end of the game actions of WC coaches and fans. I hope that will not be the way that I always remember WC.
