  1. Having played for him when he was at Maryville, I beg to differ & everyone was glad he left...
  2. Ok Jerky... I noticed that misspelling as soon as I put it up there, but couldn't go back to edit it. Find another word that's wrong Nazi. There is no open enrollment at either school, get that fact straight. Maybe if you weren't from "Po-ducky" County in BFE you would realized that...
  3. You're right... It is a fast growing city & I am glad to say I received 2 of my degrees form MTSU. However, taking all of the titles won in Rutherford County (9) & comparing them to Blount County's (24) there's no contest. Total appearances factored in, Blount County (30) wins in a landslide (18).
  4. You've got to be joking... Rutherford County was NOTHING before Rankin came, I lived there for years & know quite well the history there. Often times, they had players come in simply b/c their parents got jobs at the plant. Eric Locke being one prime example as he was a Cookeville kid about to play for my cousin's team before his daddy moved him the Riverdale. If you want to start looking at per capita numbers, Blount County has produced far more D1 players PER CAPITA than Rutherford County over the long haul. If you were to take the total number of players from each of the schools in Rutherford against a team of just Maryville/Alcoa boys, it wouldn't even be close... Better Coaches + Better Players = Better Football. You can't argue that fact & even more is the greatest coach in Rutherford County history now resides in Blount County. Not to mention the fact that he's only the 2nd best coach in Blount County right now.
  5. He was also the 1st to get the all black helmets my Jr. year...
  6. I realize there was not a 6A class, but Smyrna was a 4A school with Luke Powell & Larry Daniels playing, were they not? Before Rankin left Riverdale, then I would have to say that Riverdale was top of the food chain some of the time. When Aydelott came, they have stuck with an antiquated offense & unless Maryville's weak on the DL, then you have to have a passing game to beat them...
  7. You do realize that Maryville was a 4A school before entering 6A, right?? You also realize that Smyrna hasn't always been a 5A-6A school & Maryville has beaten them before when both schools were 4A, right? Better yet, Maryville defeated a Red Bank team years back that was not only the defending 5A champs who beat Riverdale 35-7 in the 5A title game, had Gerald Riggs, & was baisically the same team when they moved down to 4A... As far as 6A teams, Farragut, Bearden, Oak Ridge, & a few others would qualify onthat list. NEXT
  8. Maybe you should ask around. I've talked to family who played for him as well as a few friends who've coached with him who can attest to his "shortcomings". He takes way too much credit for his success & about the best thing he has done throughout his career when he actually won was surround himself with bright coaches. The next best thing he did at Alcoa was get those kids on a year round weight program. Before that, Alcoa's off season program was almost non existent or esle they could have had a multitude of trophies in that case. They would own the state record for titles if they would have started a true off season program as soon as other schools started. The only program they had befre Reid was going to Primo's every once in awhile.... That saidf, I will say Reid was an upgrade over teh coaches Alcoa had in lace befoer him. Meadows was marginalt at best, Ironside the same, but Phelps was one of the most god awful coaches in Alcoa's histroy. Rankin definitely deserves a lot of credit for what he's done there & will no doubt go down as the greatest Alcoa coach of all time
  9. Bad talent is the key word there with AC. It wasn't like we had great talent before he took over at Maryville either. Granted we've always had great feeder programs, but until Olive took us to the playoffs my Freshman year we hadn't made the post season in a long time. Olive fortunately left (TERRIBLE COACH, otherwise I don't think Maryville would be where they're at today. Olive had an awesome team his last year (Rod Cross, Shaun Love, Brandon Bomar, Bard Hatcher, Donnie Carroll, etc.), but couldn't get over his own ego & got bounced out of the 1st round of the playoffs by a good Clinton team that Hammontree destroyed the next year w/ lesser talent. As far as the other ""less than impressive stints", please don't blame him for the debacle that is the former Alcoa HC, Coach Reid... lol That guy's an idiot & the only reason he won 2 titles was b/c of the talent at Alcoa. Hammontree initially didn't realize how much of a moron Reid is & was blamed for most of the short comings Reid had in GA. Hammontree did a decent job at Rhea County before he left there, but again the talent pool was when he was at RC before coming to Maryville. The expectations of the folks at RC were a little unrealistic considering the talent available & after his youngest son graduated from RC, he unfortunately left back down to GA to work with Reid (a move he regrets). Hindsight is always 20/20 though...
  10. I think he would be a perfect fit for what they need. Hammontree would also "recruit the halls" if you will to get more kids out of the student body. A buddy of mine (Troy Fleming) is coaching with Hammontree now @ Anderson County. Coach Hammontree's a DC there & I'm sure he wants to be a HC again, but (according to Troy) both of them interviewed for the HC position at Centiniell(sp?) last year in Middle TN then landed at AC. Troy said they weren't sure why neither of them got the job being that Troy has a UT/NFL resume & Hammontree a state championship coach. That said, both Hammontree & Troy have a lot of respect for Coach Gillium's offensive expertise. I played agaist Gillium 2x in HS when Hammontree was coaching @ Maryville so that situation's allittle odd when you look at it, but Hammontree going to Heritage would be a great thing for them... If you really think about it, Hammontree was the driving force in bringing in the larger coaching staff, getting the facilities upgraded, & bringing back the championship tradition to Maryville. He also has established a pretty good coaching tree underneath him with GQ, Sweetland @ Farragut, Jason Hicks @ Greenback, Nix @ Alcoa, Stanley @ Marville Jr. High, as well as a few others having either played or coached for him. Bringing everything back to MHS & spreading some of his influence to other shcools says a lot about the man, but I feel Heritage has never really had a great tradition & think he can get that going w/ some help...
  11. If Rankin made the move to either CAK or Catholic, then that would be the worst move he ever made & you can forget him winning another title with either of the 2...
  12. Open enrollment?? What's that alluding to? Playoff win totals for BA doesn't equal to the fact the both Maryviile & Alcoa are very sclose to those totals with more state titles. Besides, one more win & 6 more losses gives them a better record?? Did you not study math? According to those totals, Alcoa's playoff winning percentage is 86%, Maryville's 81%, & Brentwood Academy's 77%. I'm guessing you failed math & can't play Texas Hole Em neither... lol
  13. I have my opinion of who would be the best team of all time, but I want to get the board's opinion before I shoot opinion's down with my answer... lol
  14. Thanks for the sta update. This just proves that Maryville & Alcoa have the 2 best programs of all time even though this is just for the last 20 years...
  15. Lol, no problem... I'm sure when I see him come Christmas dinner I'll have an interesting conversation with him about this very topic. Again though, I played with Coach Stanley as he was a class ahead of mine & can tell you he was a really good player which is why I feel would be a better coach b/c of it. It's unfortunate though as we had an "above average" team his Sr. year or I think he would have had a lot more attention as a college prospect. I will say this though about that group of players. My team learned a lot from that class about hard work & continuing the Red Rebel tradition. We were the 1st since '78 to go undefeated in the regular season b/c of those lessons learned & if not for 4 MAJOR injuries to our best skill players, we would have been the 1st class to win a state title as opposed to Toki's class of '99 doing so years later...
  16. That's not throwing him under the bus. Look, if you want to know my name, it's Hughes. Now, what do you plan on doing with that? You want to run & go tell him what I said? I'll tell him myself, I have no shame in doing so. I don't envy his position at all being the coach at MMS, b/c I know exactly the kind of pressure he has with that position. You have every parent out there thinking that their kid needs to play b/c of this or that. However, unlike Coach Hammontree or Coach Quarles, I don't feel Jay would play a kid who was better over a kid whose parents had more influence as a booster. Now Jay could tell me I'm wrong, but I'm going off the evidence I've seen as well as what I've heard from people who've had kids under his watch.
  17. You think I threw Jay under the bus?? That's far from the truth, all I said was I didn't think he was a good player (which he will freely admit) & not necessarily a great coach. That has nothing to do with how I feel about him as my cousin, but you take it how you want I guess...
  18. Alcoa's class of 79 or Maryville's? I thought I replied to General Nix's thread though...
  19. I have to agree with you on this one, weaklink. Unfortunately I feel that Coach Malone has fallen in the mold like previous MMS coaches who played the wrong kids due to politics. You won't see that as much at the high school level, especially after Coach Hammontree put a stop to that practive in the mid 90's. Although he wasn't entirely popular amongst the Maryville boosters, Hammontree is the one who laid the foundation of what MHS has become today & the the man responsible for bringing in Quarles as well as Ellis for this amazing run we've had over the better part of the last 2 decades.
  20. Ha! Nix, you crack me up man. If this is really your profile Coach Nix, maybe I should have Coach Hammontree come down from AC & make you do some "Hatcher's"!!
  21. Having played with Coach Stanley, I would have to say that I trust his football acumen more so than Coach Malone's. Again, I'm not bashing my own family here, but I feel that Coach Stanley would be more accomplished knowing both of them like I do.
  22. Being that he is family, I will definitely say that Coach Malone is a good man, a great man in fact. However, I will have to disagree with the board on his coaching expertise. Out of everyone in the family who played football, I would have to say he was the worst player of the group...
  23. I don't think they could beat the MMS team with Toki McCray at QB. That group is probably one of the best to come out of MMS in the last 20 years.
