On a. (above) - tell the whole story on this.

  2. Why the starters still playing, alley oops, dunks, running the score up etc. with the game in hand ?  Cubs, you had a good season, and nothing to be ashamed of playing this team.  I'm tired of watchng this.

Bballer - I understand your point.  Coaches with class would have pulled their starters.  Congratulations to the Cubs on a great season.

  3. half of the schools that end up at state are private schools. another thing about private schools that always has bothered me is they have the money to pay the best coach and all they have to do is coach nothing else with the school if i am wrong let me know

There are several of the larger private schools where the coaches do not teach classes.  In many of the smaller private schools the coaches do teach classes.

  4. Met a group of the Union City fans on the flight to Denver yesterday.  Great group of guys and they are really supportive of their team. Enjoyed talking to them!  Derek Mason the new Vandy head coach was on the flight with us.  The Union City guys, who were Vol fans gave him a special welcome to the SEC.  I am now a Union City fan.

  5. Still waiting on the outrage and 21 pages of blasting for any of the teams i mentioned before that obviously kept scoring on this one particular team.

Is it possible that when the "regular" school team beats the "AAU/hire the coach get the kid" team no one really cares?

  6. FinalFrame_zpsa58fe87b.png

First - I guess if holding up a state championship trophy is boring then ok.

Second - this picture is after the trophy was presented and since the game is played on Thursday, thank you, TSSAA,  a number of the fans had left already.

Third - in the Tennessean article that I saw after the Ensworth and Maryville scrimmage the word boring was not used, by either coach.

Last point - the Maryville kids are great and your coach is outstanding.

  7. Yes, it is a possibility, but if true then credible sources would support that possibility, correct?

Always interesting to me that those who support this idea "success breeds success" never provide any examples.  There have been many successful programs in the history of Tennessee HS DI sports so if this possibility is true there must be many, many examples, yet no one ever provides even one.  Which other programs do you have in mind where multiple people move far enough to where their the child does not lose a year of eligibility public or private?  And when it comes to private, include those who have the added factor of tuition?  Just curious since I understand the argument, but never see the examples to support it.

Valid point and there is information and actions that support your point.  You are correct, just be who you say you are, do not say it when the actions do not back it up.  When that happens there is a weakness of leadership and school administration.

On the point about moving to a successful program - I know for a fact of at least four current players at two different schools that moved because of the success of the program.  On this particular point I think you are off base.  I agree with a lot of your posts just not this one.

  8. Hey 78....you are not corresponding with a Maryville fan,,,,just a FYI. FactsOnly is another envious sad attempt to uncover our recruiting schemes, trick plays, garbage service done right, and the nuisance that is Maryville.

Maryville has been open zone since the beginning, even when they were going 5 and 5. Some additional facts for you fellows, there are kids that play at the county schools that are zoned Maryville. Additionally, the 3 A lineman of the year in Tennessee for the 2012 season played at Alcoa, and was zoned Maryville.

Happy New Year to the board.....

    Thanks - Happy new year!

  9. Yes.

If you pay money, you can attend Maryville High School even if you do not live in the Maryville High School zone.  It is next to impossible to determine if this gives Maryville an advantage.  Some say all out of zone students just happen to play football, some say it is a rarity.  Probably somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for the response.  Do you happen to know which year Maryville High School became an open zone school?

  10. Tornados78,

I have to say that I am a little bit confused how you put Wade ahead of Mott. Comparing their highlight films directly I don't think that there is a comparison. At MBA their big three, Bars, Robertson, and Mott, did not come out of the game, as opposd to Ensworth, where Wade only went in on defense when the rest of their guys were exhausted. I would also bring the competition level into question. Mott went against Barnett, Sawyers, and Forrest, all of whom have no highlights against him, while Wade went against Robertson and Pittman, who both have several highlights against him. On Mott's highlight tape he has a couple of plays against Wade, but Wade does not have the same, even though Mott played defense against Wade for a good amount of time. Mott does have a greater number and better offers than Wade. You mentioned Chandler, and I believe that Mott was a huge part of his success. I will have to admitt a certain degree of bias, since I cheer for MBA, but I still believe that the facts show the Mott is better than Wade.

The good thing about this discussion is that we will have some indication from the Coaches where an opinion matters (unlike mine) in the very near future.  I will wait until we hear about their college decisions and then we can revisit this discussion.

  11. DJ Mott needs to be on this. He definitely should be on there over Wade and Pittman. I think that it is ridiculous considering his credentials, and how well he was a two way starter.

For a list to have a discussion/conversation about - I think Wes did a great job and I enjoyed reading it.  From the players I talk to the list is pretty accurate. Side note - they agree that Chandler from MBA is the most talented freshman in DIIAA.  When you look at the highlight films, head to head competition, etc.  - in my view Pittman and Wade would be ahead of Mott based on this years games.

  12. That's not a circumstance, it is the decision of the coach and has to be made after the play is over...thus the game ends with the decision, not when the clock expires. Nitpick all you like, the ejection should not have been overturned as the actions of the coach were still dominion of TSSAA and its representatives (officials) until the ball was snapped again and the following play was over...or if it suits you better, after the penalty was announced and declined.

I agree with you that the game by rule could not end on the defensive team penalty, unless as you described in the example the offensive team coach declined the penalty.  Given the facts as we know them how do you sort this out?

Penalty on last play - whatever you want to call it happens on the sidelines.

White hat goes to mid field - signals the game is over.

White hat approaches offensive team coach and ejects him approximately two minutes later during the post game handshakes.

Given all of this, to me, the TSSAA made the decision they had to make following their rules. Subsequent to this, the TSSAA changes the rules to address future games since they did not like the decision they had to make.

  13. So, you're saying that after the referee has signaled the game over or an umpire calls the final out, that a coach or coaches may follow the referees or umpires off of the field and berate them?  Somehow, I don't feel like this is in the true spirit of high school athletics.

No, not what I was saying.  I agree with you that if what you described occurred, which it did not in this particular instance, it is not in the true spirit of high school athletics.  Regardless, the TSSAA has adopted new rules that would address the situation that you described above.  With the new rules it is clear how to move forward.

  14. Hermitage TN, TSSAA “ the Association† (AP Newswire December 4)

The Association today announced the formation of a new classification (DIII) in secondary athletics in Tennessee and nicknamed the “havesâ€.  The “havesâ€, which consists currently of Ensworth, will join all the current classifications in the Association that going forward will be collectively named the “have notsâ€.  The criteria for inclusion in this new division will be that you cannot be a rural or title one school, you must have an attorney on staff and have as fans some sort of celebrity.

The benefits of the new division DIII of haves will be the careful review of all calls to ensure that justice and equity are served.  Schools in this division will have dedicated Association Executives to after the fact to review all calls for maximum effectiveness.   Additionally every attempt will be made to interpret the rules to benefit the deepest pocket.

Regarding the have nots, they and their student athletes will continue to experience the same apathy and pilfering that they have experienced in the past.  And just so there is no misunderstanding, the Association does not review judgment calls (which include all calls) regardless of their impact to game outcome or player safety, because the by laws for the have nots do not allow that.  Additionally, as a reminder, the Association for legal reasons has no jurisdiction over officiating for this Division for that responsibility continues to reside in Emerald City and overseen by Oz.

The TSSAA followed the rules as they are currently written and applied them accordingly.  A judgment call was not overturned.  A situation where the rules were not applied correctly was corrected by the TSSAA upon appeal - again, not a judgement call.  The TSSAA will most likely change the rules, which they are entitled to do, and the teams (including Ensworth) will have to follow them.  I appreciate the humor of your post at some levels - just the factual basis for it is incorrect.

  15. Here's what's ridiculous, however. In this morning's Tennessean, Bernard Childress basically said that he wished the TSSAA could have UPHELD the insane decisions made by the referee, but since the TSSAA doesn't have language in its rules to supersede NFHS guidelines, they were forced to let Bowers and Wade coach. This tells us two things: 1) Ensworth probably had legal representation that put to Childress quite clearly the reality that the TSSAA was facing a situation it could not win if taken into the courtroom; and 2) Childress still doesn't have the courage to use common sense in a leadership position. He wants to be able to hide behind a policy. That's sad, but it makes sense coming from someone who was a public school administrator.

What kind of leader (I'm referencing you, Bernard Childress) actually WANTS to have his hands tied when a referee basically fails his obligations and imposes an injustice on a member school?

I think Childress's expressed sentiments show clearly that indpendent schools would be better off leaving TSSAA and forming their own organization. Other states have done this to excellent effect.

In the words of Stars N Bars from the Maryville forums - "Gooder Point".  Having to have a policy to hide behind instead of making the correct decision is very poor leadership.  This coupled with the amount of funds accumulated by TSSAA from the members would lead most to say this has to change.
