  1. re: #3 I have personally seen a facebook post where one player claimed he was going to go to school at another private not CPA, and when someone said, yea, nobody wanted you at CPA anyway, he claimed, oh is that why someone called my mom? It was a matter of days before he was enrolled. Which isn't usually the case for students, as there is a testing procedure, etc., that takes time. Not to mention waiting lists in many classes. But if it doesn't bother you that so many of the current team openly admit to playing for Maddux on his AAU team at one time, then you won't think anything could be wrong with that scenario either.

Time will tell as to how many of those players end up at CPA in the future. The current Seniors were Coach Maddux's AAU team when they were about that age. It's a strategy that has worked well for them.
  3. Nothing like letting him continue to boost his stats, instead of allowing bench players to play. He had a nice write up in the paper recently. What do the rest of you think? Is that good sportsmanship?
  4. For the other sports at the school. Boys basketball is the only program that brings in most of it's outstanding players from the outside.
  5. Depends on your motivation--if it's all about winning, Maddux of course. If it's to have the overall experience of athletics according to what CPA claims to provide--and at this point does provide in every other sport the answer is not Maddux.
  6. That MS team, specifically 7th grade, is very good. I would add there are a number of great athletes/basketball players in the high school that played in the past but are not playing basketball this year because of the lack of playing time on varsity with the large number of seniors. You could see some of those 10th graders go back out next year. They are the kind of kids/athletes that might start at a lot of other schools. They might even start at their own school if Drew's former AAU players weren't there. There wasn't much playing time for other players, even when they weren't Seniors.

  8. I have had posts deleted too. So weird.
  9. They have a new middle school player this year who is nationally ranked. Came over from FRA. from the Basketball Board (http://www.coacht.com/boards/index.php/topic/235490-cpa-basketball/)
  10. Easy come, easy go. Seems like it's been a couple of years since they've even had a Senior on the team...
  11. "unforeseen circumstances", afraid to compete without Jalen?, Whoever covers their travel expenses has run out of funds? Lack of support for a "national basketball team" at CPA? hmmm...wonder why they pulled out...
  12. I know of plenty of CPA families, who are not interested in having a nationally ranked basketball school, and would prefer having a team that comes from it's "true" student body, not AAU kids coming in and out just for basketball. It is because of the attitude changes that have come as a result. When winning the gold ball, and more, becomes the focus-- egos grow. The constant twitter chest thumping is certainly not humble, or "Christ like", nor is the showboating during games. Other CPA teams who also win, are not criticized for this type of behavior. It's time for some self evaluation over there. When was the last time CPA was awarded a sportsmanship award anyway?
  13. Easy come, easy go. New kid is coming in from FRA, probably others too that haven't been confirmed. Coach prefers to make a winning team by bringing in talent, rather than developing students in the school, like most schools do. Of course, then he shouldn't be surprised or disappointed when his talent isn't loyal, and leaves... it's not the way high school sports should be, in my opinion. And it just doesn't fit with the rest of the school.
  14. He was quoted as saying " “I want to stay here, but it’s whatever is best for my family,†Graves said. “I want to play basketball on a good team.†Graves paused before continuing and offering a smile. “OK, really I want to be on this team with these guys and finish what we started. We’ve been through so much together, but playing our senior season together with a chance to be state champions with my best friends, that’s what I really want.†It’s like we’re five best friends,†Graves said of fellow rising seniors Tayon Gleaves, Workpeh Kofa, Deion Lane and Herbert Bowen, Jr. “That’s the hardest thing for me. Charlotte has been a great city, and that’s all good. But I have the opportunity to maybe win a state championship with my best friends, and that’s the one thing I always think about. Basketball is the main reason I want to stay. We were 2-23 and went to 24-6 last season. We’ve been through everything together, and I want to finish what we’ve started" However, he also just happens to play AAU with players from CPA, so it makes perfect sense to me, since CPA is an AAU team in a school uniform.
  15. Nope--not a hater, but when I go to a high school basketball game, I want to see the kids I know, and I've watched grow up play. I can go watch high level basketball games of kids I don't know anytime at AAU games.
  16. What's fun about watching some kid nobody knows come in and play for his Senior year?
  17. What's up with Coach Maddux's silence on this issue?
  18. True, but I have friends who it costs. And contrary to popular opinion, not everyone can just write a check, some parents work more than one job to pay for Christian school. Again, though, if that is in line with the entire staff salaries, I'm ok with it. BTW, what did your daughter say about Coach M. offering rides to school to help out a single mom, while she was trying to move closer to the school?
  19. I'm sure there will be CPA parents thrilled to hear a coach who brings in his own AAU team is making that much money. Especially considering recent tuition increases. Unless of course other staff members with equal numbers of years are making comparable pay.
  20. Isn't that the truth! Show me any other school the size of CPA with an entire starting line up of D1 college prospects. Oak Hill, Montverede, Findley Prep, Simeone come to mind. Even if he does leave CPA, he has groomed Couey well in the ways of finding the best talent and getting them into the school early within the rules of the TSSAA. I don't expect any changes at CPA until the whole staff is gone. The new MS coach that was recently hired just happens to be the founder of Power Basketball TN, adding yet another way to increase the pipeline of young basketball talent.
  21. I totally get it from a parent's perspective. The problem I have, and I believe many others have, is that players are meeting the coach through AAU. He has a whole school of kids and potential players to choose from. However this year, the gyms were closed to CPA students who play rec basketball and have practiced there for years. (and they paid for gym time in the past, it wasn't free, or part of tuition). There is not a development program in place for all CPA students. Which is where I believe a k-12 school coach should be developing his players from. The involvement in AAU tells me it's more about the win, and publicity, than having a program to provide an extra-curricular activity for the school's students. On average around 3% of HS Seniors play NCAA basketball. CPA's percentage for it's starting 5 alone is 80-100%, and those players aren't even Seniors yet. In fact CPA has no Seniors on it's team. You also have to consider the fact that CPA has a relatively small high school. It's hard to believe that "just happened" on it's own. The other programs you mentioned are also highly successful. Theater, Music, Arts. They also use their own students, and start including and developing those students in those programs in Kindergarten.
  22. How does CPA do it when this is what the NCAA stats are for basketball players going on to the next level: NCAA Men's Basketball stats Less than one in 35, or approximately 3.1 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic basketball will go on to play men's basketball at a NCAA member institution.
  23. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. CPA has a similar advantage, several of the players have been playing together since they were 11 for coach Drew Maddux, first in AAU, now as the CPA school team. Sounds like a close game, sitting down to watch the second half. Personally, I prefer a good close, tough game to a blow-out...may the best team win!
