  1. You can pay my bail right? Duke's Journey Upperman's Duke Maresh looks for a receiver down field during Wednesday's practice session at UHS. The sophomore quarterback will get his shot to lead the Bees when they open their season against Cookeville Aug. 19. SCOTT WILSON | HERALD-CITIZEN Buy this photo Posted Thursday, August 4, 2016 BY SCOTT WILSON HERALD-CITIZEN Sports Upperman High School Bees quarterback Duke Maresh isn’t an imposing figure on the practice field. The sophomore quarterback is only 5-foot-7 and 135 pounds and several players tower over the signal-caller. However, size doesn’t really matter in the game of football and Upperman coach Ben Herron hopes Maresh proves that adage to be true on the field this season. “Duke’s worked very hard to get where he’s at,†Herron said after practice on Wednesday. “He’s improved a lot since spring and he’s making the right decisions. I am real proud of him.†Maresh’s journey to become the team’s starting quarterback has been interesting. When the Bees open their season with Cookeville on Aug. 19, Maresh will be taking his first varsity snaps under center - ever. “Duke actually played some receiver last year on the junior varsity team, had not even come up to the varsity,†Herron said. “But this spring he said he wanted to take a chance at quarterback. “He has really done a good job of taking care of the ball; he’s not had a turnover since we put him out there. “We’ve told him you don’t have to win the game for us, just don’t lose it.†Though he’s young, Herron said, the talented newcomer has all the tools needed to be a good quarterback. “Everything we’ve seen so far has been good. He’s got a strong arm and good feet,†Herron said. “We’ve still got to get a little better in the read game, but Duke is a competitor. If you tell him he can’t do something, he’s going to do it. “We appreciate that,†Herron added. “You would take a kid that works anyday over somebody that just has talent.†And Herron said Maresh has shown signs of talent. He’s doing a good job of picking up all the intricate details of being a quarterback, like throwing the ball on time and getting the ball to his playmakers. Maresh will get a pop quiz on his progression Friday when Upperman visits East Nashville Magnet School for a 6 p.m. scrimmage. After opening the regular season with Cookeville on the 19th, the Bees will visit Monterey before hosting Trousdale County and Stone Memorial on successive Fridays. On Sept. 16, Upperman begins regional play at Grundy County. “Duke’s confidence will be fine. I expect teams to pack the box and come after him. However, we have things to offset that,†Herron said. “He’s got a veteran line in front of him and he’s got a senior backfield behind him. We’re not going to ask him to throw it 45 times a game like we did last year. All he needs to do is make the right reads in the running game and make the easy throws. “We just need him to take care of the football.â€
  2. This was in today's Hearld-Citizen about UHS QB. Hope it posts as a link and that you can open it if interested. http://herald-citizen.com/stories/dukes-journey,16568?
  3. Just curious, was this Grace out of Knoxville or Franklin?
  4. UHS and LA were pretty even, slight edge to the Bees. Don't recall seeing Hayes for LA, but didn't think he graduated. RHS and OHS were behind these two. UHS offense has improved since the Spring. Some good gains, but mostly sustained drives. One series, used all ten plays to score. Next series, scored four times in ten plays. Defense was solid. Gave up some yards first time against the veer, but corrected and didn't give up much more. LA DL is big, all four looked to be 250+. Defense looked to be ahead of the offense as expected this early. Rockwood has some playmakers, especially the tall RB with a long stride. Not sure what region they're in, but would expect them to do well. Oneida looked like they may be young.
  5. The U goes with Livingston, Rockwood, and Oneida tomorrow. Go to East Nashville next week. Who does everyone else have lined up for pre-season?
  6. I'm including missed front ends
  7. Halftime UHS 23 EN 29 Once again, missed enough free throws to be ahead
  8. Halftime UHS 34 MC 30 Levy and Maynard sat for most of the second quarter
  9. Final UHS 45 CC 47 Lost it at the line, in the first half
  10. Halftime UHS 18 CC 23 The U missed eight free throws in the half. That's way more than they made.
  11. End 1st UHS 11 CC 17 They banked a there at the buzzer
  12. End 3rd UHS 43 SHS 23 Maynard picked up her fourth foul early in the third
  13. Didn't quite catch everyone's name, but here's what I heard: Upperman - McWilliams (MVP), Guffey, Shrum, Endicott York - Blevins, Moody, #22 Smith - Huff & King Macon - Carlisle and one other
