  1. Siegel hired Matt Rigsby as their new HC. He’s spent the last 4 years at Siegel as an assistant. He was also the HC at Cannon County HS (9 years) Congratulations Coach Rigsby.
  2. Not sure what basketball coaches you’re referring to, but I’ve never experienced that and I’ve been a ton of places.
  3. Siegel HC Dyron Birdwell was named the new HC at Oakland HS. Congratulations Coach! Siegel, you are on the clock.
  4. No need to worry about confrontation, we’re just 2 adults with different opinions and I appreciate you sharing yours. With a shot clock, Brentwood wouldn’t have to spread its D out and chase the ball, resulting in basket cuts & point blank layups. They could try to turn Franklin over in the backcourt (deny inbound, run & jump, etc) and if unable to do so, Franklin would have to shoot within :25-:30 of crossing into the front court (assuming :35 shot clock). When I was In WA (8 straight state tournaments) we lost a semifinal vs a team that shot 15/18(?) from FT in second half. We traded a 2fg for 2/2 FT over most of the last 9 minutes. With a shot clock, who knows, we may have still lost but I’ll always believe we would have had a better chance to win. At the end of the day, I believe a shot clock doesn’t hurt the player and forces coaches to improve at their craft (decision making, teaching, in game adjustments, etc). The pace of most boys games will see little change, minus the “battle of wills” (packline M2M or zone vs UNC’s 4 corners for 8 minutes) LMAO.
  5. I’ve coached teams in the state tournament in Puerto Rico, WA, Hawaii, NC and TN and never had the guys to out athlete anyone. We simply lost to better teams...or at least teams that played better that night. With a shot clock and some talent I believe I can beat anybody as no lead is safe. (Holding the ball is difficult, beating a team holding the ball with 2-3 skilled guards is nearly impossible, even with good M2M defenders). An example is Franklin (boys) spreading the floor with a lead vs a well coached and talented Brentwood team....the Bruins gave up layups. (Franklin boys were 12-3 vs Brentwood the last 4 years).
  6. Agree on loss of interest in the NBA. Too many games, games are too long, too many commercials. Absolutely HATE the timeout and advance the ball rule!! When the Sonics left Seattle for OKC I lost my remaining interest. Anti shot clock due to style of play is IMO a “coach centered” and “fan centered” reason. As a coach I believe it’s my job to maximize each players potential (as well as my teams) and prepare them to play at the next level. Playing without a shot clock does not do that. Besides, the shot clock isn’t new! NBA - 1954, FIBA - 1956, ABA - 1967, PBA - 1975, NCAA - 1985 (Women’s - 1970). With a shot clock, zone defense (full and 1/2 court) will IMO be more effective and maybe (JUST MAYBE) American players will learn how to out play their international counterparts (with improved passing, catching, shooting, moving without the ball, etc.) and not just out athlete them. Thanks for the discussion!
  7. I was a HS varsity assistant pre/post shot clock implementation In WA. There were fans/coaches/AD’s, etc. that didn’t want it and there were those that did. Since implementation there have been ZERO games were canceled, rescheduled or simply not played because schools lacked the funds for a clock or an operator. Was there a learning curve, of course! Will there be mistakes, yes! Heck, I see seasoned clock operators make mistakes in HUGE games every year since I’ve been coaching HS (2001). Funny, it’s always about “what’s best for the kids” until it’s not conducive for a HC’s philosophy or a parents schedule (and they have to volunteer for a 9th grade game). If every boy & girl in the basketball program raise $25-30 clocks can be purchased. For those that can’t raise $25, I’m sure there’s a teammate that can raise $50-100. Additionally, I’m confident TSSAA will have a contract (or present options) that will offer reasonable prices w/install. Coaches, I promise...upsets will still happen! And the same 8 teams that should be in the state tournament will be there. If your team finishes 7-20 w/a clock, you would’ve gone 9-18 w/o a clock at best and still lost vs the #1 seed in the district opener. LMAO
  8. BGA’s Jared Street named HC @ Page HS. BGA, you are on the clock.
  9. After 6 years at the helm, Brentwood Bruins HC Greg Shirley is stepping down. The Bruins were 132-57, including 67-20 in District 11AAA. I’ve been at Franklin since 2016-17 (also played them my 1 year at Beech in 2015-16) and I have a lot of respect for the Brentwood program. Coach Shirley & Coach Carter always had their guys ready to play! Discipline and Cohesion was a staple of the program. We had some real battles! Best of luck Coach Shirley! #RespectfulBow. http://www.williamsonherald.com/sports/hoops-after-6-seasons-pair-of-state-berths-brentwoods-shirley-resigns/article_ff2c3242-a397-11eb-a50d-03e3b8e4be7f.html
  10. I appreciate it. I’m aware of the requirements (pretty standard at every state). Thoughts on why Principles and AD’s don’t hire non-faculty HC’s more often? And where are you more likely to see non-faculty hires? A former coach / admin friend of mine said some school admins worry a non-faculty HC could quit 24/7/365 if not working in the school system if they’re not happy with virtually anything. Quitting isn’t in my DNA, so I’ve never considered that rational.
  11. I can see pros and cons of both. In WA State (I’m born & raised in Seattle) I’d guess >40% of HC’s I know are non facility. Makes it a lot easier when a HC is fired (sorry, “steps down”) but they’re a great teacher. My HC In HS was out of building (middle school) and he was EXTREMELY successful, including a run of 8 straight state tournaments w/NO D1 players. I’ve been active duty U.S. Coast Guard since 1998 and I’ve been fortunate to have simultaneously been a varsity boys assistant since 2001 (except while on loan to the Army 2008-10 as a OIF & OEF UMO). I’ve been an assistant at: •Antilles HS, San Juan Puerto Rico 200–04 •South Kitsap HS, Port Orchard WA 2004-08 •Radford HS, Honolulu HI 2010-14 •Hoggard HS, Wilmington NC 2014-15 •Beech HS, Hendersonville TN 2015-16 •Franklin HS, Franklin TN 2016-current I’ve also worked multiple camps outside of each HS’s kids camp, including my own in Hawaii, Snow Valley Basketball School & Jamal Crawford Elite 30. I have a bachelors degree but no teaching endorsement (I’d need to get my masters upon retiring from active duty). I’m not looking for a HC position at this time (I don’t intend on applying for a HC job while on active duty) but whatever information or thoughts shared are appreciated. Thanks, Coach Anderson
  12. What classification are non-facility hires more common (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, Private)? What school districts is it more common? (Page HS’s former MBB HC (Noe) & current HC (Howard) and current Page HS’s WBB HC is non-facility but I’d be surprised to see other WilCo schools hire non-faculty HC’s). Why? Pro’s? Con’s? Thanks for whatever thoughts shared.
  13. **I’m on active duty and NOT a teacher so I can’t speak on the faculty & teaching positions at CHS.
  14. I think it’s a good job.... Desirable location, Very competitive district, Good admin (I like their AD and VP, J. Jones...don’t know any others), good facilities (school opened in...96?), good resources, good crowds @ home & away games and most importantly; good young men within their program! I am an assistant at Franklin and my son is friends with a fair amount of their current and former players....I believe all of those young men are quality people. They did graduate a lot of talent this past year but their 2020 class has a fantastic shooter and quality stretch big. Their middle school feeder school had a very strong team as well. If you’d like more info, please provide a phone number via direct message and I’d gladly answer any specifics. Coach Anderson
  15. https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/sports/preps/story/2020/apr/25/tssaexecutive-director-lose-football-would-be/521547/ Interesting Read. To stick with the classification topic, article said; “Last season 48 teams earned a playoff berth despite having losing records, including 10 with two or fewer wins...48 of the 96 first-round games in the six public-school classifications were decided by the state's 35-point mercy rule.” Also mentions with footballs declining revenue, it still brought in nearly 3x more than boys' basketball, which is the next-highest revenue-generating state tournament. Nevertheless, 48 playoff teams with loosing records and 10 playoff teams with 2 or less wins is IMO an unacceptable playoff format. No wonder 50% of the games were decided by the 35-point mercy ruled.
  16. There would be 1 less game. In Tennessee 10 games District 11AAA Tournament = 3 games, Region 6AAA = 3 games, SubState = 1 game, State Tournament = 3 games In North Carolina 9 games: MEC Conference Tournament = 3 games, Round of 64 = 1 game, 32 = 1 game, 16 = 1 game, 8 = 1 game, 4 = 1 game, ‘Ship = 1 game. I don’t know the cost to use MTSU for 3 days, but w/the NC model, the “Regional Championship” (State semi-finals, i.e. West Bracket & East Bracket finals) and the State Championship would be the only 3 games played at a non-HS venue. West Region Title = UT Martin(??) Bethel(??) East Region Title = Tennessee Tech(??) UTC(??) All Region Title games on a Sat and all state title games the following Saturday at MTSU.
  17. The ranking algorithm only comes into play for seeding the 64 team state tournament and has zero bearing on the scheduling of non-district and district games. Teams that are in a weak league will only get 3-4 teams in and teams that are in a strong district (Memphis, WilCo, etc) will get multiple teams in the State Tourney. In NC there’s usually 5-7 teams from the top districts in and around the Raleigh-Durham area in the post season, which is how it should be. You finish 5th in a tough district, you’re in but you’re on the road. Trying to explain the post season to the average sports fan should not be difficult and explaining & comprehending TN’s system of Districts, Regions, Sun-State and which games are and are not elimination games requires a PhD. Bottom line, if you lose in the post season, you should be done!! No district runner up (or 3rd / 4th place game), and no region runner up trophy, WIN OR GO HOME!
  18. First off, I am in support of 4 classes for all sports, including football. All sports in same classifications will help with rivals remaining so. I have coached HS basketball since 2001 in A LOT of places (I’m active duty military): Puerto Rico, Washington State, Hawaii, North Carolina, Tennessee (at 2 HS’s, Beech and now Franklin) & in my opinion the state tournament process in North Carolina is the best. Basketball season in NC looks a lot like the NCAA model and consists of: 1. Non District games 2. District games 3. District Tournament 4. 64 Team SINGLE ELIMINATION State Tournament. (Always thought that if you loose in the post season, your season should be over!) Higher seed hosts all the way through the Elite 8. Semi Finals at UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Greensboro and State title game is at Dean Dome the following weekend. **Teams are required to enter games into M@x Pr3ps and their algorithm is used for ranking. **Teams can eliminate 1 non-district loss from algorithm to encourage tough scheduling. **District Tourney Champ get auto bid, each District get 3 guaranteed (makes consolation game VERY important). **Remaining seeds set via unapproved website rankings **Bracket is broken up East & West. Take furtherest East school and move westward until you have 32 schools for the East Bracket and remaining 32 schools are in West Bracket. The following year start furtherest west and move eastward. If one mid-state school has to go East and their in-district rival West, TOO BAD!
