    District 7aaa will be loaded

I figure it looks a lot like this year.  Upperman and White Co will be state title contenders.  Livingston and Cumberland will be dangerous, but not as good as Upperman and White.  Not sure what Stone loses but they will be competitive.  DeKalb will be below average.

South Side will be a handful too. Upperman and White County as well. I agree it won't be easy for Dyersburg. They will be the most talented. I do think Strayhorn will emphasize  closing out games with leads. South Side is not losing anyone either. Upperman and White County bring a lot back too right???

South Side loses Currie.  They will still be very good, but she is a big loss on both ends of the floor.

I’ll take the field against Dyersburg. What you want to put on it?

That's a really interesting bet.  Not sure which side I'd land on.  Dyersburg brings back all but one of their rotation players - the senior was probably their 4th or 5th leading scorer.  They may be better next year than they were this year.  Upperman brings back their two best players but graduates the other three starters (if there's any truth to the Ellie Butler to Upperman rumors, that's a gamechanger).  Heritage had one senior on the roster - they will be very good again.  South Side will be in Murfreesboro again and is always dangerous because of the way they defend.  White Co graduates their best player but brings back several others who can play.

Dyersburg is the favorite but repeats are hard.  Any state title requires some luck along the way.  Back to back state titles require even more.  @UCSportsFan is right - the field is probably the safer bet.

Yep. 4 classes has unfortunately watered down the quality of competition at the state tournament level. Only one game today was decided by single digits. 4 team districts, and 8 team regions mean that 25% (region champion and runner up, 2/8) of teams are getting to play in sectionals. Compare that back to when there were 3 classes. 8-9 team districts, regions were between 15-18 teams.

With 4 classes we are getting matchups of the top 25% but with 3 classes only around 10% of teams made sectionals.

3 classes had 112 teams per class.  In that system, 14% (16/112) of teams made the sectionals in each class.

In the 4 class system, each class has 85 teams.  Currently, 19% (16/85) of teams in each class make the sectional.

A complete joke! Dyersburg has 3 girls on their team that can and more than likely all will be Miss Basketball candidates in their high career! I am Dyersburg player over any of the 3A girls(no disrespect to anyone) but they are different!

Dyersburg could very possibly have the next three Miss Basketball winners with Crawford, Jordan, and Strayhorn.

I knew we had a great defense and some of the Westview Fans picked us to win it in the hotel and I was cautiously optimistic with all the good teams. Westview's defense has shut folks down as well the last two seasons before. Will be interesting going forward. We had some great offensive plays but our defense won it for us.

Wilkins did a fantastic job with this team.  Emphasized their strengths and hid their weaknesses.  Big question: Is Wilkins on the sidelines at GC next year or does he go out on top?  I heard some rumors that this might be it for him.  You think there's any truth to those rumors or people just making assumptions because he's not a young guy?

Alexander was a great player for sure. She will be missed a bunch but I do think they like Gibson County will regroup by state next year and both be a handful.

I agree.  Both teams can book rooms in Murfreesboro next March.  No one in their region or sectional will challenge them.  Peabody will play hard but they graduate too much to beat Westview or Gibson County.  If you can get to the Glass House, you've got a chance.

I think Gibson Co will miss Micah more than they realize both offensively and defensively. They will also really miss Turner. I'm not sure any from the Jr. High will be ready to contribute any next year except maybe Hart (I feel like her sisters were a little more aggressive/advanced that she is at this point). The game I saw them play against Martin this year at Martin, Martin won by 20+ and that was because subs were put in or it would have been uglier. Maybe they have improved though. Huntingdon will still be good but I think they will really miss Kee and Singleton as well. Westview getting the point guard back and only losing Alexander from state I think will still be good if not even better than this year.

Westview will be good next year, but I think people are underestimating how important Alexander has been to this team for the last couple years.  She was Westview's best player this year.  Losing her will have a major impact

From where I'm standing making the state tournament in basketball is the same as making the state playoffs in football not a great standard now final 4 or final game is pretty special win or lose. But making the playoffs is like Unaka football they make the playoffs allot but have only won 1 playoff game ever but in my opinion that was very big for them

Making the basketball state tournament (final 8) in a four class system is the same as making the football playoffs (final 32) in a 6 class system?

Strongly disagree with that statement.  In football, well over 50% of teams in each class make the state playoffs.  In basketball, less than 10% of teams in each class. make it to what is considered the state tournament.

No doubt I think Westview will be good. Think Gibson County will be good later. We got Micah and Madison's sister coming up that will help us. We will both be favored to get up here and if we do we will see what happens.

Key is getting there over and over. Westview and GC have done a great job of that. If you get there often enough, good things eventually  happen

  11. Dyersburg played South Gibson three times this year. The first two times, Crawford did not play. The teams split those two games - Dyersburg winning by two, SG winning by 15ish. Crawford was back for their region championship game. It was a close game that Dyersburg won by 5. Dyersburg is MUCH more talented than SG; this was true even when Crawford was hurt. SG played them close on toughness and coaching.

Dyersburg should win today. They are more talented than Cocke Co. That said, a Cocke Co win would not shock me. Dyersburg can be undisciplined and selfish at times - those things can get you beat.

The SG ride should end today. Upperman is talented and very well coached.

How about starting with favoritism, then add regional bias, sprinkle in a touch of corruption, and finish it off with a ton of media disparity and lack of familiarity from "voters". Any time that you involve human intervention, you invite corruption, politics, and unfairness. Odds are that a true blind draw doesn't put the two best teams in the championship game, but at least you know (could if broadcast) that it was not rigged.

Want to see it now...ask these very posters to be honest, don't copy others' poll, and seed the 2AA tournament in your next post. Guarente'd you'll get three or four different #1 vs. #2 polls. GC, GP, McMinn, York, Loretto... who is your #1?

Not directed at you maddams, just the logical place to say it.

This is absolutely on point. No way for TSSAA to seed the tournaments without introducing some type of bias. The blind draw is the fairest way to do it.

I guess I can partially agree with your definition of the issue. It is "unlucky" for sure....but "luck" should not be a part of the discussion at this point in the season. To me, it reeks of laziness on the part of the TSSAA...let's just pull some names out of a hat (behind closed doors) and see who plays each other for the state title. Really? Thats what you do on the playground. Do some work and dig in there and make it a great tournament. While maybe not an inherently "unfair" process... I do think it is absolutely "unfair" that in several brackets teams that would be considered one of the top two or three in the state play in round one for elimination, while teams with double digit losses battle it out to move on. It potentially sets up lopsided championship matches. The two best teams in the state should be left standing to battle it out at the end. Not just a good team and a "lucky" team. Yes I understand, you gotta win what is put in front of you regardless, I just personally think this system is not set up to produce the best tournament experience possible.

Those are fair points.  I'm not against the idea of seeding the teams.  If TSSAA were to do so, what criteria should they use?

Why doesnt the TSSAA actually do some work and come up with  ranking system for the top 8? The blind draw is ridiculous. Some of these matchups should be potential state championship games, not first rounders. It's ridiculous. I don't have a dog in the hunt, but man it just seems so unfair. There has to be a better way, this just seems lazy.

I would argue the opposite.  There is nothing unfair about a true blind draw.  Big difference in unlucky versus unfair.

In my opinion, the bigger problem is the lack of transparency.  TSSAA could d a live draw on Sunday before the tournament like they did before COVID.  Even if you just stream to coaches and media, it would eliminate even the possibility of unfairness.

I agree with everything you just said. But want to point the one time SG beat Dyersburg it was without Cincinnati commit and region mvp Joya Crawford. She was out with an injury. The other times they played and she was in the game Dyersburg won all of them.

I watched the region championship between Dyersburg and South Gibson. Crawford played that game. Dyersburg ended up winning by 5 but was trailing going into the 4th qtr.

Dyersburg has the most talent in AAA - 3 guards that will likely play D1 basketball. However, they don’t always play like the most talented team in AAA. They have the guard play to handle South Side’s pressure but they also could turn on each other and lose by double digits. No Dyersburg outcome will surprise me this week. They could win the gold ball or lose in the first round.

Would love to see a Heritage/Upperman finals. We will see how good Heritage is when they don’t have that home cooking. No easy wins from here on out.

Definitely possible. Upperman heavy favorite to come out of the bottom bracket. I’d be shocked if they’re not in the finals. Top bracket could be three of the four. I’d list top bracket in order as Heritage, Dyersburg, South Side, Cocke Co

Any games in the top half of the bracket. 1st and 2nd rounds. I mean Gatlinburg Pittman better be thankful. The blind draw is a joke.

What’s the better option? I ask that question seriously. Lots of people hate the blind draw, and I can understand why. I think TSSAA could save themselves a lot of headaches just by doing the draw Sunday and streaming it. But I’m not sure there’s a better option than a draw

No. The best team did win. They didn’t play well, but they did in fact,  coudos to  HD wasn’t downing them just reflecting on coaching or lack of it by Summertown

@Jaychapman what happened? Must have been bad.
I went to Loretto tonight because it was a shorter drive and I thought it would be a good game. I was wrong.

Huntington/summertown is the game of the night no doubt in AA.   Loretto/Cheatham Co a close second.  Any upsets possible??? Never know this time of year.

    Smith could beat East Nashville.
I don’t think Summertown over Huntingdon or Cheatham over Loretto count as upsets

  20. Sectional Matchups

    Meigs/Gatlinburg - not close. Gatlinburg by 30+

Alcoa/McMinn - Alcoa is good enough to be a problem but not beating McMinn at home.

Pearl Cohn/York - York big setting up a killer first round state matchup against McMinn

Smith/East Nashville - good game. Smith will scare East Nashville but not beat them.

Cheatham/Loretto - good game. Loretto is a tough place to win. Loretto by 4-8 points

Summertown/Huntingdon - game of the night in AA. Summertown guards could cause problems for Huntingdon. Kee is a matchup nightmare for Summertown. If Summertown can’t get to Murfreesboro this year, it could be a while before they get back. Give me Huntingdon in a war

Trezevant/Gibson - GC by as many as they want

Westview/Memphis Business - scary game for Westview. MBA has a few kids who can play but Westview zone will cause significant problems. Westview by 12-15
