  1. very rarely do middle school coaches make a successful jump to being a head coach. There is so much difference between those two levels. The biggest difference is the level of competition between middle school and high school coaching staffs. Not saying it cannot be done because i am sure you can go back and find middle school coaches who have been successful. Maybe there was lots more to the decision that meets the eye, there usually is. Well good luck!
  2. good luck to the new coach. Sounds like Unaka is a unique situation but i know just a few years ago halls was also in bad shape so it sounds like he at least has a game plan to fall back on. Biggest thing is support and understanding from the community and time for him to implement the changes that he will have to make.
  3. Coach Clayton has been successful everywhere he has been, incredible overall career. If the administration goes with williams or gore they could not go wrong. I know that the principal is very familiar with both of those guys.
  4. you are closer than you even know bluedevil58, several factors are big here: first community, many have a mindset that a home town guy is the only answer, also unrealistic expectations, being accepted by the people and buying into what is going on, Malone had things going in a very good direction, it was not the players and it was not the coaches, i will not blame the board or the administration but if the turnover figures are as bad as you refer to they are the ones hiring and firing, without stability no program is going to make consistent gains and win that people want them to, referring to a very old movie quote by clint eastwood, a man has got to know his limitations, so do small communities
  5. I think that things will get better on the mountain for change sake is not the answer all of the time. Greg Brewer is coaching and teaching at Grundy now and he will be a big help. Some time things just take time. From a logic standpoint the people that picked Casey are in charge and will also make the next hire, those people will magically not get smarter all of a sudden, you find yourself in the same place as now except the kids have to learn another type of offense and defense, basically start from scratch again, what would make you think the people in charge would make a better hire next time, stay the course and let the kids get better and stronger. What happens in the pros and colleges is as far removed from high school football as it could be. Be patient, supportive and for goodness sake don't run down your kids coach while you eat supper or watch tv
  6. Did i not read correctly that the 9th grade coach will take over as head coach. Maybe i read wrong, would not be the first time. I do know that one of the problems whitwell as well as other small schools face is that sometimes it is hard to bring a coach any from the outside because their are no teaching positions available. I think coach Malone did not teach there but only coached. Things like that can really limit the pool of applicants.
  7. You are right thinker, you make a very good point,
  8. Good luck to Crockett on their new hire, it is not usual for a high school to give the job to someone who has absolutely no coaching experience at all. Note: playing on the highest level is still not coaching. It devalues all the coaches who work up from a lowly assistant, to a coordinator, to an eventual head coach. I hope for the kids that things will go great and for their new head coach also. Hopefully he will be smart enough to get assistants that can serve as coordinators and help him greatly on the transition from the pro game. I have heard through the grapevine that Crockett had several very successful head coaches, state champions, as well as solid assistants that were excited about taking over the program at Crockett. the important thing is not winning the press conference but what takes place after the conference. There are no successful head coaches that work part-time and certainly not as a hobby. Obviously the new head coach has been extremely successful throughout his career from high school, to college and finally the NFL. Hopefully his drive will help him catch up and lead this very experienced team to a great season. Congrats coach, do Crockett proud The head coach and the coaching staff has set this group of kids to make a giant leap in 2017.with a new region and a very winnable schedule, lots of experience on both sides of the ball, 6-8 wins is not out of the question this year. Throw in a division one defensive end and things look good! Go pioneers!
  9. Batman devil, no hating going on but coaching football is hard, just like playing professional football is much harder. Although it seems like both skill sets completely over lap they don't really. If my kid was going to have brain surgery I would try to get the best doctor ou there with as much experience as possible, if I could I would try to avoid the new medical doctor that just passed medical school. Sure, r both doctors, yes, but the amount of experience is vastly different. I am not trying to relate football to brain surgery but even hiring a new football I would hire the best one in the group that gives the school the best chance to win. A great name is awesome to have and it does excite people for a little while, but it fades fast, especially if winning does not follow it. Like in most jobs, people have to earn their way, like u at your job at me at mine. I certainly did not start out at the top but through years of practice and apprenticeship I have gotten better. Imagine if your boss walked in tomorrow and gave someone with a big name your job. Would you b happy, content to take orders from the new guy? I doubt you would
  10. thanks for bringing that up thinker, i had never thought of it like that, What does identifying Crockett as a place like that really mean? maybe hiring someone famous will help get the facilities upgraded. However, it also occurs to me that notoriety should be accompanied with hard work, great coaching and experience. I think the pioneers have a chance to win a lot of games next year and i hope they do. Also, they do have lots of people that support them. including me.
  11. helpful hints to the proable next head fb coach at crockett: -if you are a db indians fans you will be very happy -not a certified teacher -never has been a head football coach -never been a paid assistant for coaching football, nor a offensive, defensive or special teams coordinator -only been a volunteer assistant for a very short time, very short -is a professional bass fisherman as his main job presently -played professional football, very good player -very like able guy -comes from a very athletic family well known in eastern tennessee Crockett has been built into a very competitive football team by coach jeremy bosken who when he took over had served as an assistant coach for several years at science hill and also served as a very successful offensive coordinator at a high school out of state before coming to crockett. does it not make sense to honor his and his assistant coaches hard work and the players themselves by giving the kids a experienced coach to lead the program. Any high school football program, especially a 5A program should never have the settle for a coach who is learning on the fly? the answer is unfortunately and probably no, in this day and age we go with the big name, the photo op in the paper. If the person can coach great, if not everyone will learn their lesson and choose better next time. Never forget it is sometimes about the kids!!!!!!
