I don't know what Dburgs stats were but I don't see how the stats could be "dominating" either way. Both defenses played lights out.

Today’s Leader has Covington with 223 yards on 62 carries. Yet to see anything official on Dburg but Kirby said in his quote that the Chargers “dominated the stats in every category but the most important.”

I don’t know the totals for both for the game but at the half the Covington had 144 yards and Dyersburg had 104. A big chunk of Dyersburg yards came on the one long 65 yard TD. Covington had 10 first downs and Dyersburg had 3. Again that was just the first half it is a 4 quarter game. Covington made to many mistakes. Even with the fumbles I think Covington would have still won the game. The pick six was the dagger in my opinion.

J.R.'s playoff record at Covington is 5-2.  When he was head coach at Munford, his playoff record was 0-2.

    2019

    Melrose    W 48-6
    South Gibson     W 14-10
    Wooddale    W 27-0
    Pearl-Cohn    L 20-21

    2020

Covid forfeit to Milan (The AHSFHS site counts this as a loss.  I'm not sure if the TSSAA conisders it a loss or a no contest.  I would presume they would count it as a no contest which would make Coach Kirby's playoff record at Covington 5-1.)

    2021

    Raleigh-Egypt    W 54-6
    Ripley   W 35-0

I would like to see Coach JR Kirby’s playoff record. I’m away from the house or I would research it.

Good info @stacmot ! Kirby has been to the the State Championship three time as a assistant. (OC) I want to say Matthew Shearan was on one of the state runner up teams that Kirby was on too. He is now on the Dyersburg staff.

Covington wins this game. They have a history of losing big games in the regular season and then winning them in the playoffs. I don't quite get it, but it happens year after year. Covington wins because they have a bunch of different things that they can throw at a defense. Nobody really knows what offense they will run come Friday, and I think their coaches like it that way. Dyersburg is a good team, but I think Covington has been there and done that year after year.

Very true! The Chargers would always take one on the chin to SG or Milan. Two teams that are  traditionally pretty good. I hope this year we can come out on top of Dyersburg. Should be a good one!

I watched the YouTube video of the game earlier this season between these two. Ripley gave the Chargers a good game. I saw the Tigers get an interception and two fumble recoveries. Covington is going to have to avoid turnovers in the rematch.

Also in the first match up didn’t Ripley go away from their predominately run based offense and go spread, throwing the ball all over the field?  Wonder if they will do that again this time??

@BIGPURPLEMACHINE Covington has made a few changes in the secondary since that game. If they try to throw it hopefully the DBs can put a stop to the passing game. I think Ripley will pull out everything to beat the Chargers this week.

Massey has Covington winning 34-7, and Sonny - Moore has the Chargers by 30. Still, we have to come out and win this on the field. I have to like our chances, though.

I would like to think we will come out and take care of business. Kirby will have them ready to go.

First meeting was surprising based on the final score. Much of this game will be based on injuries and Ripley has had more than their fair share of injuries this season.

Hope Ripley is back healthy. Covington knows all about the injury bug in years past. Just last year we had to play with a third string QB that had never played the position before. Injuries are part of it. I do hope this is a injury free game!

I believe you are correct in terms of the top 4 teams, but I'm thinking there could still be some seeding implications for 3 & 4 correct? If Ripley wins and Millington loses to Bolivar then Ripley finishes 3rd and Millington 4th right? Or if Millington loses to bolivar then Bolivar is in and Millington out?  I could be wrong though :)

@BIGPURPLEMACHINE Can you help us out ?

Your guess is good as mine! Lol they used to have the what if’s on TSSAA but I can’t find it this year.

Covington travels to Bolton to finish the regular season and for our final Region 7-3A matchup this season. The Chargers are heavy favorites to come away with the win.

I’m sure that Coach Kirby wants to get our team ready for the playoffs the following week. Having the Dyer County game cancelled due to weather, followed by a 33-0 beat down at Haywood has obviously not left a very good taste in our mouth going to Bolton this week.

I do want to come away with the win, but my primary concern as a Covington fan is to see us come away healthy and ready to make an impact in the playoffs. Our history says that the “second season” has been very successful over the years for this program.

I agree! Really want to come out of this game healthy. The last few years we have gone into the playoffs with some key injuries. Would love to get into the playoffs 100% healthy.

Coach smith shows class. Like i said in post earlier this game is emotionally personal to this team this week. You’ll probably see the name Yvette Forrest on all the players from Haywood Friday night, especially her son #44 johnathan Forrest

Very sad story.I couldn’t imagine being in that young man’s shoes. She was my mom’s sorority sister and she spoke highly of her.

You think with all the emotions surrounding this game will cause some mistakes from the Haywood players?

I am guessing the Bolivar game was a practice game for Covington to run the spread. (prepping for the tomcats and deep playoff run).

Only time will tell! Kirby will always have to Wing T in his back pocket. It has won him plenty games over the years.

Sheww, I would not bet on the game period. Rivalry games you can throw the numbers and stats out the window. Either team has a legit shot at winning this game. Both are really good, with great coaching. ZERO chance I would give someone 14 points to cover. They will have to win by 15 points to win the bet.

I would agree. I know this is a new year but last year it was a really good game and either team could have won. I just hope for a good injury free game. Hopefully this will help the Chargers in the playoffs.
