While not the TSSAA, my son lost a match last year and the opposing coach came up to our coach, Sean Russell after the match and said "Man I'm sorry. You guys got robbed and he should have won that match". Don Elsea was watching and literally told us the call was wrong. Sometimes, it is exactly what it is. Score more points and it won't be left up to the refs.

I've seen those Cleveland coaches in action. They fight hard for their guys. heck, Matt High throws more bricks in freestyle than any coach in the country. HA!

Yes he does and wins 99% percent of all challenges. No better coach in your corner than that man, he will go to bat for any kid!

As a parent and somebody who played sports as well, bad calls are part of the sport but we as parents can't sit around and blame the officials all the time. It's our job to use these as teaching moments and I believe Josh did it right by showing everyone the next day how we should respond. You get back up and go to work!! No need to sit around and complain because nobody has time for it.

How will it work next year with little Chittum and your boys?  Will we see Jose up at 120?

Everything always works itself out!! Not sure what the lineup will look like since that is up the coach's and who wins the wrestle offs. If one of boys doesn't make it so be it, nothing is given and everything is earned in this sport.

I'm just saying anyone can be replaced. Lots of other coaches have the same abilities he's not the only one

You're right anyone can be replaced and yes a lot of other coach's can coach technique. I just think Josh is has a special talent of getting these kids to listen and buy in to what he is teaching. To me that is what separates him from most coach's. I don't know every coach so I will not say nobody else couldn't do it but you're taking away the success he has accomplished by basically saying anybody could do it and I disagree with you on that

Anyone can be replaced and do a better job. Hes not some kind of God. Don't know the man but just saying

I agree with TreyB on this one, the one thing I have seen first hand is the man has gift of teaching and he commands the room like nobody I have ever seen. You can have 30 small kids the age of 7 or younger running around and all he has to do is whistle and the kids just listen. He connects to them in a way that most coach's can not. I def think there are some great coach's who know very high level technique but it's hard for them to teach kids that young. IMO that is what separates him from a lot of other coach's I see do it. Not saying other can't but if you have seen it first hand you know what I am talking about.

Look at this way, if you take Josh and Joey out of the equation and leave Allan’s money, is Cleveland the best public school program in the state? Nope. If I decide not to spend tens of thousands of dollars hauling my kid all over the country to places other people will not go over the last 9 years, pushing him to challenge himself; if he only trained at the Jones Center during wrestling season 3 months a year, does he have the success he has had? If he was not willing to do all of the extra training when other kids are not, would he be as good as he is? Nope. So yes, I believe if we had the exact same group of kids, parents, and coaches and lived in ANY other part of the state and had a wrestling mat, this group of kids would be just as good. HCWC is great because Josh is a grinder. Cleveland is great because Joey is a grinder. It’s WHO they are and money did not make them that way. If you think either guy or any of these kids would not be giving the exact same effort other places, you are greatly mistaken. Was HCWC started with the help of Allan’s donations, sure, would it be what it was with a different set of coaches and athletes? Nope. We did not come to Cleveland years ago because of Allan Jones or the Jones Center. We came to Cleveland because of Josh and Joey. You can’t argue that because it is straight from the horses mouth. If either of them left and went somewhere else, we would be gone. You ask any other parent of our kids the same thing and see what they say. So Allan and the Cleveland community better take care of those two guys because if they left and Allan’s money stays, the dynasty would die quickly. Everyone throwing shade at us wants to act like money is the reason we are good. Like I said, keep believing that if you want to. And honestly, I don’t care if you do. I only posted the information I have because people that are uninformed need to know that the people who deserve the real credit are the kids, Josh, Joey, and their staff. Period.

Couldn't agree more with that statement. If Josh and Joey leave we would be gone as well, because they are the ones who have created the culture not Allan. Great post!!!

Awe, thank goodness you 2 finally can read, I’ve posted my name on here multiple times never have been scared to put my name to something or make someone figure out who I am,  so it’s only taken you two 30-40 years to learn how to read. I was almost worried about you all!

Yeah and that is about the only factual information you have probably ever posted as well. I have pity for you brother I really do

Long time lurker, first time poster…

Only posting because my family name was brought up.

We were between clubs and looking for a place to wrestle, I had someone reach out to Bosken to see if we could join HCWC, as there were 4-5 kids at the club around my son’s weight that he battled with every single year at the state tournament.  Bosken reached out to those parents to make sure they were ok with adding an outsider and former competitor to the room and they welcomed us with open arms.  Cleveland is good because there’s a support system of coaches, families, and wrestlers that love being Blue Bloods, a community that loves wrestling and supports the program, coaches with integrity that love and invest in these kids.  Cleveland is good because a foundation was laid for success to continue to create more success.

So we were not recruited, we were looking for a home and asked to be apart of their program.

Glad I have you be part of the family brother!!!

I will say we wrestled a couple times with HCWC and our shirts said check into cash. Not sure what or if he paid for anything. But his business was on the shirts but that was years ago.

He might have donated the shirts for the kids to wear, but did he pay for your son to travel to that tournament is the point I was trying to make? I don't know maybe he did. All I know personally he has never helped me and my kids financially be able to go to any tournaments and we travel everywhere.

    You

I would love to know how you know Alan pays for all the wrestling trips these kids take every year? Where is your proof because my sons travel all over and wrestle for Cleveland and nobody has ever gave us money to go to these tournaments. It's all sacrifices we make as parents to give our kids the best opportunities and experiences.
Cleveland takes kids to Fargo in the summer you think Alan pays for that? I promise you he does not, kids are out mowing lawns, washing cars etc. to make it to that tournament.

Its really sad to see grown adults make outlandish statements on here and don't even have their facts straight

I'll give some of my background which will probably explain my point-of-view.

My nephew attends McCallie.  What they have as a school have is phenomenal (I'm sure Baylor is awesome too).  I'm impressed, however, I think I'm too pragmatic for most to take seriously with regards to sports and high school.  Not being a great athlete myself and not being a rah rah guy I view sports as a means to an end.  My kids had fun, truly they did.  I would give most anything to relive the vast majority of it. They went to a county school and a decidedly mediocre one at that.  Could they have had more fun at a private school like McCallie? No. My kids most likely wouldn't have started.  Don't get me wrong they were great in my eyes but facts is facts.  My son was a solid team wrestler, trained hard, and worked hard. Understood his role.  My daughter was a solid athlete, same goes for her. Trained hard, worked hard.  I then think what more could they have gotten out of it if they had went further or been on a team that was super good? The answer is nothing.  They made friends, discovered the value of work, had some realizations about themselves, and then that was it.

I can imagine the immense sense of satisfaction that must come with winning and competing at those big tournaments and meaningful duals, but that is all I can do.  We weren't there. I think its important for all to remember those are what they are, moments.  Nobody cares within a few short years other than the coaches who work their tail off to make sure each new group is prepared to repeat those same feats.  More power to them, I love their dedication.

With my background out of the way, I think kids should go where they want without restriction. I think schools should be able to recruit, both public and private. Why?  Because there is only so many really good kids, particularly in wrestling, to go around.  The vast vast majority of parents don't care because we are having fun watching our kids.  Does it suck to get whooped by a far superior team who has either worked harder than you or simply recruited? Yes, lol, yes it does. Been there, but I understood the bigger picture.  My kid's teams, and therefore me as well, have received some whoopings.  So to the point @cowcatcherII made about McCallie not talking there is definitely some truth.  However, Cleveland can't control dumb parents, they just can't (and you all are dumb, really really dumb).  I've got no problem with a program tooting it's own horn either.  Having money (whatever that means) is great but you still have to practice hard and practice right. They obviously do that. Kudos.

I've said this before but everyone really should understand this. Most parents don't sit around discussing Cleveland, McCallie, and Baylor.  We just don't. I promise you this topic never came up between parents. We went to the duals and for the most part loved being there win or lose. There is a bubble that some are in where all this matters, like really matters. It doesn't matter.  Parents, with any brains, know what's up when you wrestle a handful of these power house public/private schools.  I get that it is very easy to get caught up in "winning", I get it, but man it's just moments in time. For the current mediocre wrestlers out there who might read this, remember, where you went to school and how good a wrestler you were (or weren't) means nothing in life, absolutely nothing.  If you personally worked hard and were a student of the game then you received everything you ever needed.

At 113lbs yall assuming Jakobs gets by the winner of Boltz vs. Creque. Both are returning placers.

Mason will be one of the best technicians on the mat this weekend out of all divisions. A lot of people don't know much about him because he traveled outside the state most of his youth career, but come Saturday there will be no doubts left. The only 113 pounder I would give Mason some trouble would be Jojo. I love Walker but 113 is Mason's to lose in my opinion. It should be a great weekend

They only lose 2 starters.  Elliston will certainly be tough to replace but they have backups that would have started for most teams.  Plus, the kids returning are just one year better.  No disrespect to Soddy but I just don’t see them competing with Cleveland next year.

Cleveland will be the favorite again next year as they are losing Ellison and Sims, but they have kids that can start for any high school in the state. Cleveland has a strong core coming up in the next couple of years that will keep Cleveland on top. The team to really watch out for in my opinion is Dobbin Bennet. They have a great young core of wrestlers who all wrestled out of the same kids club that challenged Cleveland a few years back. They will have a tough 106 pounder coming up that has huge success on the national scene as a youth and a few other kids potentially moving back. This weekend was not a fluke at all for them, but just the beginning. It should be fun to watch over the next few years.

I have, I’m guessing maybe Varnell does know more than some of you in your own room do, because you have people who are talking and they are the ones that have told the stories. So it’s pretty easy to know with the program what’s going on when plenty of people will talk about it. I still have plenty of friends in the community to stay up on what I want to know. But hey at least Cordero is still in AA where he has a chance to win a state title, he wouldn’t have that chance in A or D2. Funny thing is Dyer prob should have went to Ooltewah, it’s out of zone so the rules state he doesn’t have to move 20 miles of out of zone, he could have went there and prob only have Jose to worry about.

So you have seen him weigh in, because there is not one tournament he had been under 100 pounds since he went 88 at Fargo.
Cordero has a shot at AA, JoJo is an absolute hammer and nothing to be ashamed about losing to kid that is nationally ranked but he could go 113 as well. D2 I know each of those kids and their parents and all those kids train together. You would be surprised how on any given day those kids Tran, Richie, Phillips and Cordero could win just depending on who is on that day. I hope Cole gets his shot and finishes his season strong.

And I heard it wasn’t, but I do know as I was told by 2 people one in the program itself he was not given time after weigh in to rehydrate and was not allowed to rehydrate, reason being why he was so mad and left while sitting there seeing a kid that doesn’t even have to cut weight drinking and eating the entire time.

I just hope he gets his chance to continue wrestling and end his career on a high note.

I agree I hope he gets to finish his season on a high note as he is good kid that come come from great family.
I do find it hard to believe he was not allowed to recover and one kid was. I think more people would have said something especially since I know a lot of the parents in the program. I believe some were even there to even watch it.

wait what? You have me confused here, you put Dyer was a senior and ranked #1 but he lost BOTH wrestle offs? You go on to say that kid didn't make any excuses as he was coming back from a broken collarbone one time and the flu the next,  when he lost the first time.  So which is it, did Cordero win both times or go 1 and 1, or are you talking about they have 3 wrestle offs. One right before season starts and 2 during season and Cordero lost the first time but beat Dyer the other 2?    Also, just hypothetically, have you ever weighed in for a tournament or even a dual meet and not be allowed to rehydrate before the match takes place? I mean I don't think I ever had a time in wrestling that we didn't weigh in and have an hour or so before the matches started and were able to eat and drink a little to get the energy back. I mean maybe wrestling has changed since I wrestled and coached, what do I know

Cleveland has two wrestle offs each year and both being best two out of three. Cordero lost first two matches at the first wrestle off. Second wrestle off Cordero won the the first two matches. I was mentioning that Cordero didn't make any excuses when he lost at the first wrestle off.
This is the first I have ever heard anything about not having proper time to recover after weigh in and I know both families. I was not there so I can't speculate on how long they had but from what I heard from multiple people there it was a fair wrestle off.

  16. I see alot of people talking about Cordero, and how the wrestle off was controversial? I would love to know what was so controversial about it?  Cleveland does two wrestle offs during the season so all the kids know it is coming. They brought in an outside refreeze to ref the match as well. Kids found out on Friday that it would be on Monday then it got moved to Tuesday. Dyer was a pound over going into Tuesday. I get it he was a Senior and was ranked number 1 but he lost twice in both wrestle offs. So i would love to know what was so controversial? That kid didn't make any excuses( just released from having a broken collarbone 13 days before the wrestle off, and he had the flue 6 days after that) when he lost the first time, he got to work and made it happen for himself. Nothing against the Dyers, but to say something is controversial when it wasn't is ludacris  to me
