  1. The Knoxville High School programs have been successful for many years and will remain successful for many more to come due to the Club Programs that exist. Knoxville club soccer has produced top level teams made up of players from locations all over Knoxville and the surrounding areas. Numerous players from West Knoxville, Maryville, Oak Ridge and other communities, play together on Club Teams and then compete against one another on the High School level. The rezoning will distribute some players to nearby schools but the high level of soccer will remain due to the continued efforts of the Clubs and the parents who support their kids in both academics and athletics. Some will choose to move in order to provide the best educational opportunities for their children, but few will move to provide the best Soccer opportunity. The level of competitive soccer will continue to grow even with the rezoning. As for Hardin Valley, time will tell.
  2. WOW !!!!! I am glad that Coach Smelser had some time to reflect on the game before posting that one. sports-man-ship (n.) The qualities and conduct befitting a sportsman. sports-man (n.) A person who abides by the rules and accepts victory or defeat graciously. I commend him on his teams efforts and season, but his post was far from being a shinning example of good sportsmanship. References to "the intent" of the opposing team and the integrity of the Farragut coach goes out of the boundries of being a good sportsman. Being a teacher does not automatically qualify someone to lead young people on the field, but I do appreciate his commitment to his players and their families. Emotions and egos run high on the field of competition, and both teams gave everything yesterday. Being gracious in defeat more so than in victory will develop our young peoples character. Good luck to Farragut at state and good luck to Science Hill in the 07 season.
  3. Congratulations to Bearden. Now that both Knoxville teams are in state, anything is possible, AGAIN???
  4. Jake Russell scored on the PK that was given when Ben Backstrom was taken out in the box. Kevin Underwood scored on a beautiful pass from Jake Holt when he split the defense on a dead run and kept it low past the goalie. The game was extremly physical and Farragut brought it right back at Science Hill. The ref kept it in check as much as he could but I would be interested in knowing how many opportunities Science Hill got at the 20 from very light fouls. Set play opportunities had to be at least 3 to 1 Science Hill to Farragut. Congratulations to Farragut for a hard fought win and yet another trip to State.
  5. 3-1 FHS with 8 minutes plus stoppage left.....2 of farraguts goals off pk's, dont know much else about it tho.....
  6. My original question was based on the time of the game posted on EUROSPORT. From what I am hearing, it sounds like Science Hill may not want to change or are not able to change the start time of the match. Anyone from Science Hill have a definitive answer on this? Numer8??
  7. Hats off to Bearden. They continued to challenge for every ball, adjsuted their attack when appropriate, and stiffened their defense during the 2nd half. A well balanced execution of the game as it progressed and the result speaks of it. Farragut appeared to be cautious the first half of the match, as if they were waiting for Bearden to make a mistake. When they put on the attack in the 2nd half, Bearden was ready and countered well to put the game away. Good luck to both teams and maybe there will be a 4th round this year for these great programs.
  8. Any news on game time?? I believe the game is slated for a 7 pm atart, but this conflicts with the Farragut Graduation ceremony time. I know in the past they have adjusted the start time in order for the teams to attend the ceremonies. If anyone hears of any start time changes please post. Should be a good match but Farragut is questionable with the injuries on defense. The big field could help them if they use it and spread out the passing lanes, but Science Hill is on a roll and home field advantage comes up big at this time of year. Good luck to both teams.
  9. Bearden 3 Farragut 0 Region Final

    Refereeing

You are probably right on this. Working as a baseball umpire I use to make sure that all were treated with respect and that their opinions were gathered on any difficult situation. But, in the end it is the head ref or umpire that must make the call, good or bad, popular or unpopular. For a ref to not make an overriding call of a line judge in order to not embarass them, is losing sight of the main reason of for his position. That is to make sure the game is played by the rules and calls are made based on his best judgement. It truely is a thankless job and I believe that most take on the responsibility for the love of the game. I can gurantee they do not do it for the money or the popularity. My hat is off to the ones that approach each match and call with an unbiased and fair approach to each team on the field. Any fan, parent, or player who believes they can do a better job should get the training and step up to the challenge. This sport needs more trained, experienced refs in order for it to sustain the level of growth and improvement it has had.

I have to agree with Illini on the offsides issue. Most refs do a pretty good job of getting this call correct, but there is a whole lot of room for interpretation on the offisides rule. Was the player involved in the play when they were in the offside posittion seems to cause more quetions than any other on this rule. If the player in the offside position drew a defender to him/her and allowed the offensive player with possession to gain advantage, then the offside call should be made. A player does not have to be in possession of the ball or near the ball in order to be judeged offside. Then there is the human factor. Sometimes refs just blow the call. This happens! They may have been out of position or looking at another area of play, but the fact is they do miss calls. This is when the center ref needs to step up and make an overriding call when the error is obvious. Rarely happens and I am not sure why????
  12. Tin Man, as you know, a foul is a foul when it is called. It does not matter if it was accidental or intentional. The refs have a direct impact on the flow of the game and if any player allows calls or non calls to change their game plan or get them mentally out of their game, then that player has lost their focus. I have watched Farragut vs Bearden matches for over 10 years and every match is heated and contested on and off of the field and every match has it share of controversy. If the Bearden players allow this to decide the outcome of the match, then I say they are not focused on the objective. If you spoke to any Farragut player about the West match and the calls made against them, you would probably have many allies in your opinion. Many questionable calls, many yellow cards, one red card, all of which forced Farragut to re-focus on the objective over and over again. The result!!!!!!! I am looking forward to a great 3rd match between these teams, and hope that the refs and the players will remain focused and that the match will be decided by the play on the field, calls or non calls aside.
  13. Lets not forget that this is a TEAM game. Sometimes a single player can have an impact on the game but rarely does one player win the game alone. Bearden played at a higher pace during this game but Farragut took their time and continued to play their style of soccer. The results are what they are and Farragut won this match as a Team. Maybe if more Bearden players got involved in the action as a Team instead of as individuals, the outcome would have been different. As in recent years, there still is a chance that these two teams will meet again. I hope both will represent the District and East Tennessee well.
  14. Farragut 2 Bearden 1 in second OT.
