  1. Tre Haynes (#55) is not the one that caused Coach Williams (Smyrna) to get hit. The young man that caused it hit a Smyrna player and his helmet flew off hitting Coach Williams in the jaw. He has since been kicked off the team. There are several key players included in the suspensions, including #55, but they were all not given the same punishments. It's not yet clear who got what suspensions. I'll try to get it all cleared up at the Jamboree tonight. Still haven't heard anything on the Smyrna end, which leads me to believe nothing was done. Maybe I'm being pessimistic about that, but maybe one of the Smyrna folks could let us know about that.

55 and the other one are all that should have been addressed on this. before they came in they were well on the way of seperating the two teams. from the time the kid got thrown down which drew the flag till 55 came charging into the pile it was 16-18 seconds. still can not figure out why 10 other kids have to be suspended for any length of time. like i said before way to harsh.

  2. Gallatin will have 3 pre-season scrimmages

Friday July 29th @ 5:30 pm vs. Smyrna Bulldogs @ Gallatin High School Practice Field

Friday August 5th @ 5:30pm vs. Blackman Blaze @ Blackman High School

Friday August 12th @ 4:30pm vs. Riverdale Warriors @ Gallatin High School practice Field

Might want to check date of that Smyrna scrimmage, pads go on Aug.1 so I know it is not July 29. I have scrimmage date as Tuesday Aug.9

  3. good to hear Spring went well, but losing 6 varsity coaches and apparantly all, or most, of a freshmen staff are some big shoes to fill come Fall. Does anybody have any names to throw out for replacements. Do they raid other county schools for coaches or do they look elsewhere. Who was responsible for calling plays during the spring?

Bever and Childs called plays, and already had one new assistant during spring but I can not remember his name.

  4. Evidently those of you who think this happens quite often(retaking the 7th or 8th grade in Middle school). There are specific written rules by the TSSAA that I found in two different places. Those who are found doing it will be not be eligible in the 9th grade. It does not say what happens to the administrator in the Middle school who allows it or the fine that has to be paid.

That is why anyone with any sense knows to do it in the 6th grade, surely every parent would know by then if "Johnny" is All-American material or not. No really if you are going to hold em back do it then, no penalties, or threats of, will be held against you.

  5. This is what I know....what I have seen here and what my limited contacts have told me.

Williams - Gallatin - lateral, but some seem to think he will get the head coaching job when Lassiter leaves, but nothing is official.

Keasler - UP - new head coach at Summitt High School.

    Brooks - don't know

    Embry - don't know

Duncan - UP - I "think" he is the new DC at one of the county schools in the southern part of Middle TN.

    Jones - don't know

Vassar - I think this is the one that is leaving teaching/coaching

    Platt - don't know

I don't remember where I heard it, but I think that Duncan "might" be taking somebody with him. I would love it if somebody "in the know" could fill in some of my "don't know" blanks. I don't care how you slice it, losing 8 coaches is not good. It appears that only 2 are taking higher level jobs. Having been following the program for the last several years, the talent level IS on a down swing. You simply cannot maintain the talent level of the class that just graduated and the future Senior class. Those classes are usually once every 5-10 years for most schools, not back-to-back. To say the talent level is down is not meant to be a slap in the face to the following classes as much as it is a "tip-of-the-cap" to the classes before them. However, the Freshmen teams haven't seemed to fair as well since this coming Senior class was Freshmen.

    Brooks - Mt. Juliet

Jones - non teaching, probably looking for job to support family

Embry - freshman coach, did not coach varsity

Platt - freshman coach, did not coach varsity

I must be honest, either the coaches that were there during spring practice or the players must be commended, or both because it seemed spring practice went smooth and I would say both scrimmages were a success. This just my opinion and others may have a different view.

  6. The State Senate just passed a school voucher bill that would allow public school students who feel "trapped" in an under-performing school to get a voucher from the public schools district to pay for tuition at a private school of their choice. In Hamilton County that voucher would be in the neighborhood of $4800. This measure has yet to be acted upon by the State House.

How would this affect eligibility? I don't know how much tuition is at the smaller privates, but that would be a drop in the bucket for the larger ones. I could see a scenario where a family qualified for 75% aid and with a voucher be over the top of the financial aid limit.

If it does pass, I could see over about 2 years everyones tuition in Hamilton county for example increase somewhere in the neighborhood of about $4800.

  7. Honestly, this year is the last chance for Smyrna to compete in the forseeable future. They will always have some athletes, but they will struggle to make the playoffs after this year. This years Sr's are talented, but the classes after them aren't quite the level they've had. Several coaches have sought employment elsewhere. New playcallers on both sides of the ball, and lost at least 6 college signees. Congrats to Coach Williams. Should be interesting.

As they say lets worry about this year this year. Last year everyone was saying Matt had a bunch of coaches nobody wanted, what a difference a year makes. Good luck to Mark in his new job at Gallatin.

  8. The 145 that wrestled in the regionals for us, Alex McKinney, is a great young man and a solid wrestler who had a bad day; he has been a solid and key performer for us all season long, and an exemplary team member for the past five years. He is one of those people who was in a backup role for four years; this was his first year as an every day guy, and he won 30 matches for us, which I think is excellent. He always tried to do what we asked of him, and I am proud of his effort this season. I am also disappointed that he will not be making the trip to state. I might also add that I never considered him a backup this year. We had three guys who rotated between 140 and 145, depending on the needs of the team.

Alex was a solid wrestler, and will be a good man. He sat in my classroom as well, and was an exemplary student. I will miss him, because he was always dependable and accepted and played his role on the team. That is more important to me than how many people we qualified for state.

I appreciate tnmatfan's interest in Science Hill wrestling, but he does not speak for our program. We have a tendency to focus on accomplishments sometimes instead of the real work of the sport, which is instilling in our people the lessons of wrestling so that they might apply them to all aspects of their lives and use them to be excellent human beings who make the world a better place. I am satisfied that Alex has learned those lessons.

I know this is off topic on this thread, but I did not want a less than fully informed poster to trivialize the importance to my team of a kid I have spent five years of my life with and respect a great deal.

Wow great post. If you are a coach great job, but if you are a teacher, that is even better talking about him in the classroom.

  9. No I hadn't heard anything saying that it wasn't on, but I tried to look it up on Riverdale's homepage and there was nothing listed about it(I obviously looked in the wrong areas). I figured a game of that calibur would easy to find on their homepage. I then thought that maybe the deal fell through. Can you give me a site to go to that I can read about it. Thank you for confirming it.

How is this, it even tells you who they will probably play in 2012.

  10. Bear crawls up and down the smoking hot track during the hot summer that fried and ripped flesh the players hands, causing emergency room and doctors visits for burn and wound treatment almost done him in his last season at Ravenwood. It was the only time that I can remember Rector doing a public apology in front of parents, players, administration, and coaches. It reminded me of General Patton slapping the soldier for cowardice in the medical unit, then distastefully apologizing to the entire Seventh Army.

It gave the players a football memory to carry with them the rest of their lives. They all survived to tell their future sons the story of that day. Yes, Rector was forgiven by most because it was innocent mistake. Players previously performed bear crawls and push ups on the track before but the conditions of the track being black polyurethane with the rubber granules surface on sun baked hot summer day can tenderized, fry, and bleed the bare hands up pretty good as witness during bear crawls. It was important lesson to the players not to tick off the coach. If you do, make sure you are not near to the track but close to the sand pit.

That is just plain stupid on his part, just goes to show you just because you go to college it doesn't make you smarter than someone that has common sense. If that story is true, that is pitiful.

  11. The real question is why does an Ensworth fan continue to show up on every Alcoa thread ? Most Private fans are above becoming a Troll .... I guess by you worrying so much about Alcoa you're setting a fine example for your school aren't you ? Maybe you should start worrying about how you represent your own school instead of what the Alcoa fans are up to .

Div II schools have been down this road before, been hearing all this since about, oh, forever lol. Interesting to see how other schools respond to it though.

  12. Coach Simmons was head at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in early 80's, then 12 years as an assistant at McCallie, then onto East Ridge for a few years. He then moved to LaFayette High School in Georgia for a few years. After that he was a prinicipal in North Georgia before coming to McCallie as the AD.

While on initial contemplation of the hire, I might say hmmm..... As I think back over the past few years as I've worked with Bubba it begins to become somewhat more apparent. He loves football and coaching. He is really good with the kids and I don't think he missed many practices due to other duties needing his attention and as the head I guarantee he won't miss any! The staff is loaded with high quality individuals and he is another one.

I know the resumes that were received were given great thought and consideration. I am sure the school has selected who they feel to be a good fit for the program as well as for the overall school mission.

This post sounds like a play when the flag is thrown, then they huddle to talk about it, then come out and announce no flag on the play, and everyone looks at each other except the refs wife, who thinks good call.

  13. Great post, having sent my kids to both Div I and Div II schools I agree with you. But if you read this with the blanks which division comes to mind first? You made a good choice for your family and good luck.

I would not consider sending our children to _______ to be "buying" their way to success. I would consider sending them to _______ to be doing what is best for them, which is my job as a parent. It is not my job to make ______________ schools better, it is the job of _________ schools to solve the issues that drive parents to move their children to better schools. Why would I choose to send my children to a school which is overcrowded and performs at a lower academic level? Why if they have a passion for football would I choose to send them to a school where they have little chance for success? Why would I not choose a small school with outstanding academics and a disciplined, well coached football program? There is no "buying" success at __________, the academics are challenging, the football is demanding and there is no easy ride to success. But the best thing about being at ________ is the feeling of family, that is truly priceless.

  14. This is the first I have heard of it. I will research it. I can already see 1 huge can of worms opened up if the rule is as you say it is. If the player can choose where to play as long as the school is with-in a 20 mile radius of their residence. That is going to open up the "Recruiting" debate on any and every player that makes an impact on the field.

    For ex.

In Knox county, I live in a 20 mile range of Bearden, Karns, Hardin Valley, Farragut, Powell, West, Fulton, Central, and possibly Austin East. That is 9 teams a kid could choose to play for. I dont think transfer rules should apply. They player should play where they are zoned to go to school, if they were not home schooled.

GOD FORBIDE also. You have a kid that lives deep west or deep south knox county and really knows how to play football. Then ends up at Maryville. Those fans would never hear the end of it.

After lookong at it again I see where the 20 miles was for private schools. But still have lots of questions.

  15. Bump BA up to AAA? You are kidding right? Before the split occured to division II There were 5 classes A through 5A. BA VOLUNTARILY played up in 5A and won two championships (95 and 96) beating Riverdale and Jefferson County. Nobody had to tell them to play up they did it on their own, that is why the cryout for something to be done and as they say the rest is history.

When the initial talking came along there were only 3. The 5 came later. but then how many years did they play in that division? BTW, if you look now the regular season is cheduled as A, AA, AAA; only in the post season do they break into 6.

And now the outcry about Alcoa and Maryville running out such strings of championships. You gonna demand they move to Div II now?

From 1993-2008 the classes were 1A-5A in football there was no A,AA,AAA anymore for football, enter Z-plan in 2009 that is when for district alignment purposes and the addition of 6A A, AA, AAA came back into play because of mixture of 5A and 6A (AAA)in some districts. As for your question on how many years they played in it I don't know, but since 5A was created in 93 they won it it 95 and 96 at the most 4 and for sure 2. As for the cryout for something to be done I wasn't talking about Alcoa and Maryville I was talking about the cryout for something to be done about BA which there was . DII started in 1997 and the rest is history.

  16. As a Bradley fan I never said not to play Baylor. And they had players from Cleveland that would have attended Bradley or Cleveland at the time. When Bradley had good teams we competed and won a fair share of games. And that was back in the day of "Red" Etter still. If you want to be the best, be ready to take on all comers, and beat them.

Guess I'm old school in that regard.

I never understood the mentality of the TSSAA not just bumping Brentwood Acadamy up to AAA and telling them that if they wanted to recruit they had to compete with the biggest and the best Tennessee had to offer. And if they didn't want to do that quit recruiting. Simple answer, simple solution.
