  1. Coach Rider's defensive coordinator for the 2005 - 2007 seasons was Jim Hastings.
  2. We've started bad before (the last 2 years), and come around by the end. I'm confident our team will get better and by the end of the year be a threat. That starts this week vs. Boone. Go Get em guys, lets go 1-0 this week!!
  3. How bout that D...great job guys. We are so lucky to have the ol' general coach Hastings coordinating our defense. Great job players and coaches. This win puts us back in the getting respect category around the conference.
  4. We will be okay.....does anyone remember how we started last year???? We've got 2 of the best coaches in the area in coach Rider, and coach Hastings. Don't turn this into an Elizabethton type thread where all we do is bash the coaches and players the whole year.... The players, and coaches need our support. Even though I still have a knot in my stomach after watching last nights game, I will say that as far as exciting games go (take away penalties), the last 2 weeks have been two of the most exciting close games I've seen in a while, very close the whole game. I feel that we out played East and Cocke County, but we just have to correct the mental mistakes we are making, we'll be fine. Go Falcons!!!!
  5. Yes, tough loss friday night.....It's sad that the excitement of the game was taken away by the officals alone (17 penalties - 11 volunteer, 6 east). I'm not saying that we didn't deserve some of the calls, but come on. Hold your head up guys, we are still a great football team that just got some bad breaks last friday. Our season goal starts this weak when conference play kicks off.
  6. I've talked to Scott Rider, and I can assure you that he is not going anywhere. He loves his position and situation here at Volunteer. So you can mark him off the list of posibilities. I hope you guys do find a great coach that can turn your alls program around. NET football is just not the same when Betsy is average. Good Luck!!!
  7. why would Carter from South, or Rider from Volunteer want to go to Sullivan Central? Both thier teams are on the rise. Thats a step down for Carter, and probally a lateral step for Rider.
  8. Cannot wait for this game. First time I've been to the castle since '02 when we played THS in the first round. This team this year is a lot better. I love reading how cocky THS's players are, because it's just firing us up even more. Less than 24 hours until kickoff. I feel great about our chances. Our kids are hyped up, they are ready to make Brad Stubbs sorry he ever left us.
  9. I think Volunteer has a great chance of scoring an upset this week against the Vikings. We match up well against THS. Our ONLY weakness this year on Defense has been defending the pass against teams that could throw, and last I heard, THS can not throw the football. The way our offense has improved this year we don't really have any weaknesses as of late. Could have scored 50 on Cocke County, and over 40 on Cherokee. Bottom line is this: if we could start the season over and play all our games with the team we have right now, we would be 8-2, and that's a fact. THS is 8-2. I don't know how much Tennessee High has improved this year, but I saw them in the MLC jamboree and was not impressed. Thier defense looked average and could not tackle well, and their offense looked one dimensional. No, I'm not promising a win or anything, but I do think it will be a very close game. I hope the Vikings over look us. We will be ready, our players believe!!!
  10. If we can win out going 5-5(beat boone, cocke, and cherokee), do we still have a shot at the playoffs, need help from other games, or not have a shot at all? anyone know the scenarios?
  11. Great job last night guys.....2 weeks in a row of solid football. Now let's go get the green devils. If we can win this week, we've got a good chance of making the playoffs.
  12. Obviously you were not at the game in '04 to make a comment like that. Yes, I would consider running Eades (East's big time QB from '04) back on the field after BOTH teams had substitued thier JV guys in late the second half to throw a quick 60 yard bomb to pad his stats against JVers; along w/ the fact that they called a timeout w/ 8 seconds to go in the game from the 20 yard line, for one last touchdown to go up by about 50 points classless. Not to mention the way that ALL their players hung out the windows of the buses yelling and screaming at Volunteer fans, and players after the game about how bad "we stunk." Coach Rider, or Venable would have never let that happen if it would have been the other way around. Bottom line is that Mr. Nelson does not teach character, and you cannot build a true football program w/o it. You cannot teach character when you have no character yourself.
  13. Not a bad effort last night against West. West was just flat out way better than we were (as they are way better than everyone around). We've gotta put the first 2 losses behind us; we play a team this week that lost to Davy Crockett in week one. First time Mr. Nelson has come to our field since the classless display of coaching in '04. A win will lead to more. I'm confident the shoe will be on our foot this time around.
  14. Talking about the field, I heard that Morristowns field was so bad because they waited untill late July to sod thier field. I'm no turf management expert, but I have planted a lot of grass in my time, grass will not take in a period of 5 weeks. Whoever made that decision to wait until late July to sod just wasted 16 thousand dollars of Morristown money. It should of been sodded in the spring. I agree that something needs to be done about the field. I have watched Morristown in the playoffs every year for a long time now, and by the end of the season the field is in shambles every year. It's a sad fact that the best football team in this area has to play on a field that is a discrace to high school football. Heck, Appalachia, and Unaka have better fields at the end of the season, and all they do is line off cow fields. If I was from Morristown I would start raising cain. By the way, great football team guys. Don't see anyone giving you all a game until maryville week 14.
  15. Hats off to North, they played much better tonight then they showed in the jamboree. I guess they really were holding back some. We can't let this loss get us down. As far as the conference is concerned, this game meant nothing tonight. I thought we showed a lot of potential tonight, but there were some 1st game rough edges I'm sure we'll get ironed out. If we could have one play back in the 3rd quarter, may have been different outcome, but that's football.
