  1. We watched part of the game in the hotel before grabbing something to eat then going to the stadium to watch the rest of the game. SP was really impressive. The way they played reminded me of Alcoa. In the '70's we had to play SP, and it was always a scary game. Both teams have a lot of tradition. Congrats on the win, SP, and congrats to McKenzie for a great season!
  2. Bet the winds will start picking up around 7:00 Central...
  3. If you have never seen the send-off, you're really missing something. Even murvul can't do that. And, alcoafan72, the first time you experience it you do have tears in your eyes! You feel like you're about to bust with pride because you remember back to when you were in that elementary school and how you looked up to the older kids, and how you wanted to make them proud. The first time I saw my oldest son on Goddard Field in a Tornado uniform, I really had to hold back the tears. After living out of state for 20 years, that's something I didn't ever think I'd get to experience. THAT IS WHAT MAKES ALCOA WHO WE ARE.
  4. You probably will be able to... haven't changed much since high school...still have a big mouth!!! /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />
  5. We'll have to yell double-loud for you!
  6. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> You're killin' me! May be! Might even be a chocolate cake behind there, too! Gettin' the young un' around 11:30; Heading out around 12:30-1:00...you riding?
  7. So, the GP qb was quoted in "The Tennessean" as saying: "They definitely think this is going to be another cakewalk, and we're going to use that and come out motivated." (story by Jeff Lockridge) Had to laugh when I read this...apparently he's been reading thesmartestpersonalive's posts here on coacht! No doubt GP is coming out motivated...it must be tough to live in the shadows of Alcoa! Alcoa is coming out as motivated as if they had never won a gold ball: these boys are out to prove something! Can't wait 'til tonight! Everybody have a safe trip to the 'Boro!!!
  8. Glad to hear it. This Alcoa fan wishes him the best.
  9. Alcoa's enrollment hasn't gone down...it's actually increased somewhat. When I graduated in '80, there were roughly 380 students; 27 years (OMG, did I just say that??) later, it's increased by about 100. When I was in high school, the population of Alcoa was around 7000, now, according to one clintabbot, we're up to around 8500. Take into account people moving into Alcoa who don't have children, or who send their kids to county schools or Murvul, and you have your explanation.
  10. Let's see.... DCA beat Goodpasture by 7 points. Alcoa beat DCA by 38 points. HMMMMMM....... I'd expect nothing less from GP fans than hoping for the best, it just won't be enough. Look for Rankin to keep the starters in until the very end of the game since it'll be the seniors' last game.
  11. Does that mean I'll see a couple of tickets floatin' my way??? /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
  12. Hey, Congrats on winning the tickets to Friday's game...if you need a couple of friends to give a couple of tickets to, I'll pretend to be your friend all weekend!!! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  13. We have kids (one that I can think of in particular) who are excellent athletes who, for one reason or another, decided not to play sports this year. I think that's what he meant.
  14. You're a riot!!! Shivy didn't come from NC, he came from Jeff. Co. If you'll look on the roster you'll see that he's not even playing for Alcoa anymore. I'll admit, my son is one who wasn't born in Blount Co., or even Knox Co. for that matter. He was born in Ga. and spent his elementary and 6th grade in SC. While he's not a starter (he's an underclassman), we chose to live in Alcoa and have our kids attend Alcoa Schools for numerous reasons besides football. Oh yeah, I'm an alum of AHS. That's a big reason parents send their kids to Alcoa.
  15. Batten down the hatches, fellas! The winds are startin' to pick up here in Springbrook!!! /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" /> Sorry guys, I hope it's not close...close games make me nervous! Plus, if it's not close, I get to see my son play (er, I mean, "gain experience") ! /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
  16. Oh, mcwrestler, you are wise beyond your years! Got an e-mail on Blount Co. school mail from a Heritage Middle School coach about the elementary basketball tournament... Need I say more? You know if it had been Murvul or Alcoa they would never have scheduled it for game night!!!
  17. Uh, alcoafan72: I hate to argue with a former schoolmate, but Alcoa is a 2A school. We're one of the smaller 2A schools, but we definitely fall into 2A attendance.
  18. The main thing about Alcoa's (and Maryville's for that matter) success is that you have little kids in the grasshopper league wanting to be a Tornado (in MHS's case, a Rebel). The little kids idolize the high school players, and the hs players take time to play with the kids. As they get older, they don't want want to disappoint those who came before. To me, that is the main reason for success. Most of the players who have gotten a lot of attention (George, Warren, Lindsay, Cobb...I know I'm forgetting some here!) are home grown and have come through the Alcoa football system. Yes, there are boys who moved to Alcoa for specific reasons (Lanxter, Shiverdecker), but Shiverdecker for one knew the tradition and stepped right into it because he has family who came through the Alcoa system. When we moved back to Alcoa 3 years ago, my boys also embraced the tradition. It certainly wasn't like that in the town we moved from, but it definitely was like that in the town my spouse is from (whose high school also has a winning tradition). I think that has a lot to do with it. One of the other 2 top reasons (and I hate to say this!) is that because our older brother (Murvul) is so successful and dominating, that raises the bar for us. Again, it goes back to grasshopper/peewee/midget...our little kids want to beat Murvul at all stages of life. The third reason...somebody else come up with one. I think the 1st 2 say it all! GO BIG A!!!! BEAT G-P!!!
  19. Thanks! Along with "never, ever wear red & black"!!!
  20. Alcoa rolls on again this week. Hope the team looks at what happened to Goodpasture last week and keeps focused. Now, Rockwood is no DCA, but they've got to keep focused. Alcoa is looking a lot better than they did at the beginning of the year; guess that's what some experience will do for you. Hey, Rankinated: Could you please correct your spelling on your signature? The correct spelling is: TORNADOES Sorry, just a BIG pet peeve of mine.
  21. Hey, Vettasue: You can share mine! We're all one big family, anyway!!!
  22. Thanks! Did you do that so I wouldn't have to come on here and chastise you???
  23. Well said. When we moved back to the area 3 years ago, one of the selling points for Alcoa is the # of scholarships that the kids got...not just athletic scholarships, but overall scholarships. And, we (okay, I) tried to keep an open mind about all 4 schools in Blount County. Alcoa was just a better fit for our kids than the others.
  24. Hey! Thank your son for the gloves...they're pretty nice. My freshman came home with them...let me know if he wants them back.
