  1. Then why don't you go apply for his job? He's the ONLY sports guy on staff at the paper and he has to cover every game of every sport. Guess what, it can't be done. So some things get put in, some things get left out. Apparently it was your sport that didn't make the cut. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> I think Jack says it best: ???Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have more responsibility here than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago??™s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. I know deep down in places you dont talk about at parties, you don??™t want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it. I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don??™t give a **** what you think you are entitled to!???

  3. If they were so concerned with the state of the program maybe they should've had a meeting with Coach Smith in the past 4 years to express their concerns. But nope, the first meeting they ever had with him was to tell him they're letting him go.
  4. The whole Middle School/Youth Programs running the same thing as the high school is slightly overrated. They should mostly focus on skill development. If they can get into a stance, come off the ball, and block/shed/tackle/catch/run when they get to the high school the scheme part can be installed. The lower levels should follow the same general philosophy, i.e. not going 5 wide and chunking it all over the field if the HS is a run oriented team. But running the exact same scheme isn't necessary. Don't get me wrong, it's nice if it can be done, but the MS/Youth can teach individual skill development while tailoring their scheme to fit their people, or their particular coach's style. Also, just so I'm clear, I'm not saying anything about the coaches on any level! /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I think they all do a good job of getting their players ready.
  5. What a stupid post. To call the coaches lazy shows that any idiot can get an internet connection and become a keyboard cowboy. We get that you don't like the coaches, but to call them lazy is about as ludicrous a post as I've ever seen. You don't have a clue what kind of time and effort investment it takes to run that program. And I say that assuming you probably have a kid on the team somewhere, because most people, even most of the parents don't understand what the coaches put into it. There are plenty of things to legitimately disagree with them about, but to question their work ethic and the effort they put in is a cheap shot. But hey, you're such an expert you've been here for 3 whole months complaining. Give me a break. Btw, it's NOT THE COACHES JOB to go do the fundraising. That's the boosters job, and as far as I know they've done a great job of it. So no the coaches prolly won't go out and do a majority of the fundraising, because they shouldn't. As for giving the booster club people plaques, knowing Ray, and David, and Bob and the others as I do, I'm pretty sure they didn't go out and solicit it, and I would doubt they knew much about it in the first place. But I know what they do is very appreciated by the coaches. I do have a problem with them giving plaques to their own members for said contributions when last year they didn't even give the coaches anything as a sign of appreciation. And the year before that they didn't plan on giving them anything before being pressured to do so.
  6. Only if the admins stay out of his program and let him do his job. But if that were the case you might see the results you want out of this group of coaches.
  7. I find it funny how most everybody generally says congrats to Warren County ya'll are doing much better than in the past, until they make a showing against your particular team. This isn't about Oakland specifically, but everybody we've 'played closer than we should have' or actually beaten when we 'shouldn't have' blames they're own players/coaches for not showing up ready to play.
  8. I seriously doubt Ricky Bowers gives a crap what his stats look like in the paper. I'd say he wasn't too happy with it being a one score game into the third quarter. Doesn't sound like he did anything untoward with playing his guys too much.
  9. Dude quit yelling. I totally agree that you don't need high D1 athletes to have a successful program. It just seems that on one hand you're saying a program doesn't need high end athletes, and then on the other hand your saying we have those athletes but they're not playing and we need to get 'em on the football field. I also think you're overstating the athlete case. You seem to imply that if a kid isn't high D1 level then he isn't an 'athlete'. All those top teams in all those states may or may not have multiple D1 players, but they do have a certain level of athlete playing, and that's one thing we definitely need to improve, the overall talent level from the top of the roster to the bottom. Which is something I think we both agree on. But don't come on and say you don't need athletes to win and then use Riverdale with all their college players as an example. Heck, just look at Cookeville in our own region, they're not loaded with 'athletes' but they've been on top of the region for a few years because they have a good program. Btw, how much more coverage do you think the paper should give them? The football team is always the front page story on Sunday with a sidebar or two generally added in somewhere.
  10. So the team with more athletes won the game? Or are you saying almost counts? I never said that at all. But having great players sure helps you win games. A great program sustains itself even when the talent is thin. We all want a respectable program. It just seems that respectable is all too often the next step that we haven't taken yet for many people. 5 years ago respectable would have been playing Lincoln County to within 50 points. 2 years later we took 'em to OT at their house. Maybe we haven't had the 'breakthough' win yet, but ask the region if we're any more respected than we were before Madewell took over. With what attitude? What have I said that would get me run out of town in, apparently, a 'real' football state.
  11. Make that the principal. He's the one who responds to community pressure.
  12. So the way to get kids out to play football is to put their name in the paper when they're 8 years old? Brilliant! How about we try to instill in the youngsters the values of playing for a team, being a servant leader, sacrificing yourself for the good of your teammates, etc... How about we don't raise a(nother) generation that thinks it's all about their personal glory, Mr. Ocho Cinco. No we don't want to do that, let's blame the paper! After all, that's as easy as blaming the coaches, cause surely there's not that much to running a paper, except the fact that putting one kid's name in the paper means somebody else's name gets left out, or putting one youth league team's game in means another one gets left out, so somebody's gonna get mad either way. And they will then probably get on a stinking message board and throw blame around. Go apply for that job before you criticize it. It's a lot easier to say what should've been done after the fact. Just remember, somebody has to make the decision that you sit back and complain about. Btw, do you understand that a newspaper's job isn't to promote any program's agenda, but to report on what's happening in the community? IMO, the paper has always done a good job of working with the program and has been very kind to it, even at times when there wasn't a whole lot to be kind about. Btw, I've not seen anything about Pamela Rodgers's court dates in the sports section. Really? You believe this? /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> Well, it took you a while, but you finally said something I can agree with! Are you saying De La Salle didn't have any athletes? 151 wins in a row with no athletes? Hope I'm misunderstanding something here. First, if peer pressure won't get 'em out there, what will? Second, why should we do anything for the ones NOT playing? What have they earned? You should be doing more for the ones who went through 9 months of weights, spring practice, summer agilities and conditioning, fall camp, and ARE playing, then maybe some of the others might want to play. You tell us what sould be done, outside of putting their names in the paper from youth league, of course.
  13. Woops! Have fun readin about this one in the Tennessean.
  14. If this was 'a Riverdale town' the coaching staff would get the support they need from the administration to be successful.
  15. I'm with this guy! Great post 31!
  16. Dang, Uncle Rico, guess you should've started then we would've won state! There's plenty of good ol' boy networking around here, but it's not with the coaching staff. There's not a coach that I know of that gives a crap what the last name of a kid is. But I guess it always has and always will be easier to blame others or feel like a victim cause you 'don't have the right name' than to admit somebody might actually be better.
  17. I'm dead serious. There's plenty of space here. Enlighten us with your football brilliance.
  18. I think they've got some good leadership, and some very hard workers. But I think lack of depth is the biggest concern right now, but that's gonna happen when you graduate 17 seniors. I have no idea how they will do, and I'm definitely not gonna put up a prediction based on what I heard about one scrimmage. Bu then again, I may lack the credibility to comment on them. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I wasn't taking a shot at this year's team by any means, you know I love all those kids. But maybe I was giving you the business just a little bit. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
  19. Don't we say this every year? How much stronger and how much more in shape can they get?
  20. I love the hybrid wing-t stuff that Cumberland U./Wilson Central are doing. Tons of formations with jet and rocket sweep. You've really got to read your keys to have a chance at defending it.
  21. I'm sure everybody that needs to be playing both ways will be. But if you have a couple of comparable players it's better to let one focus primarily on one side of the ball and one focus on the other side. There are as many success stories with two platoon football as there are with people playing both ways. It's all about what you believe is best for the program.
