Why do people even question if Alcoa will win? Or do they? I think it is a given in 3A. You have Rankin, open zoning (which is probably why Rankin found that job attractive- who wouldn't),proud tradition, and most of all lots of talent! (which you don't have to fight for.....pay and play) It is a shame they don't play 6A where they would at least get tested from time to time. I didn't go watch this game yesterday because I knew what would happen. Had nothing to do with Goodpasture, could have been any team in 3A, but unless you have a friend or family playing, what is the point? I read where Alcoa fans say nobody will play them, and that may be true. But it may have more to do with what is seen as a unfair advantage by most coaches on the open zoning. Rankin knows what he is doing!! He saw the new schools coming to Rutherford county (and 2 more on the way) and moved to a place where he could get all the talent and not have to listen to the "recruiting" crap. Alcoa has a great program and will continue to dominate 3A, I just wish there was a way they could move up and play with the better teams so we could get a decent state game for them.

Why is it that Maryville Fans always throw out the "Poor little us"crap??? You have won a Zillion Gold Balls, Ranked at the top of the state every year, and a great coaching staff. And from the last post---now the "Reverse Race Card"!!! Is it just that small town town chip on your shoulder or what???? Really?? I keep reading about the Big Boys stuff that was brought up LAST year about Rutherford County teams but somehow became a slam on Maryville. A year later you are still bringing that up like you get no respect????? Please!!!! It makes your great team look kinda silly.

I hate to butt in on this thread, but I can't help but wonder about something Red Warrior said......He has not seen Ridgeway Play!!!!!! But he is sure they had better talent....but not Football Players!!!! So at what point in the game do they put the Players in and take out the Talent???? I guess the rules have changed in HS ball, I thought you played with ONE team, not TWO!!!! I guess HHS's "Football Players" have talent and Ridgeway's "Talent" can't play football???? Phil Watts record 72-83, 72(1st year of school)2-6, 73 5-5, 74 7-3, 75 4-6, 76 8-2, 77 7-3, 78 9-1, 79 8-2, 80 7-3, 81 7-3, 82 6-4, 83 8-2.(I wish I had a may to find out State Rankings from this era) Fisher had some very good years right after Watts left but about 3-4 years later the wheels fell off. Rankin got it turned around and took it to the top. I don't have a problem with the current coach, just don't say the program wasn't very good before Rankin!!! Some of us "fair weather fans" who were busting our tails at the beginning of this school take offense to that!!

Riverdale was a contender in the early 80's!! The great Lincoln County team that went 13-1 in 82-83 lost to Riverdale at the pit! Like I said, 1 district loss would keep you at home back then. It just seemed as if a key injury would always pop up! If that system was in place today only Smyrna would have went to the playoffs this year!!! Yes Rankin took the program to levels which may never be seen again, but don't act like earlier teams were not very good. Riverdale was feared back then!!!!

Well I am glad you cleared that up for the youngster!!!! Phil Watts had the program winning a lot of games! But back then only the district champ went to the playoffs. One district loss would keep you at home no matter what you were ranked!!! To say 3 or 4 loss seasons were the norm before Rankin may be one of the stupidest things I have read on here!!! But if he is one of the coaches it makes since...like kicking on 3rd down against Oakland when you have struggled in that dept, you just put it on the 2 yrd line, and you run the WING-T!!!!! You are built to RUN!!!! 2 plays, for 2 yards, to beat your rival and top-ranked team!!!!! As you can tell, I may never get over that!!!LOL
