  1. didn't MBA scrimmage Riverdale a few seasons back (and get their hat handed to them)
  2. That's a fairly bold pick considering Centennial hasn't played a regular season game yet...but it certainly sounds as if they should be improved. Let's compare notes after the game. I hope it won't be as hot/humid as last Friday night.
  3. As you've seen throughout this thread - Hillwood's issues are complicated and hard to overcome. (sports-wise) They may never have another 12 game win streak in football like 2 years ago. It was lightening in a bottle. When I was there in the mid/late 1970's - we won a state championship in baseball and went to back-to-back sub-states in basketball. (and went to Pulaski and won by about 50 in football in 76-77 season) Nobody is claiming 2006 to be anything like 1977 or 2004 or any other year. The current situation is what it is.
  4. Yes, a few weeks ago I took the Rodney, Currywood, Brownlee, Brook Hollow route from Charlotte Ave near the "new" Walmart to hwy 70. I didn't see too many new mini-mansions except on Brook Hollow near 70. Not so many that HHS would be full of 16 year olds from that area attending public schools...proving exactly your point. If a person can afford to level a nice 4 bedroom house and build a mansion style home, their kids won't being going to a public school most likely. (if they have kids) What stinks is there is no way to get into that "rock quarry" lake behind Rodney Dr. to fish anymore due to houses that were built in the 1990's. There are/were BIG bass in that lake. Oh well. If you know anybody with a house on that lake, ask them if an old Hilltopper from the 1970's can cut through their yard to do a little fishing. LOL
  5. I noticed most of the tearing down and mini-mansion building in Davidson County was more like the Radnor Lake - Granny White Pike type areas. Nowhere near HHS. Schools full of middle and upper-middleclass kids from fast grwoing areas (Williamson, Rutherford, etc) are the ones that will be strong in sports and other areas. Ravenwood did win the state in 5-a in it's first few years of existence. Many of the parents there easily could afford to send "junior" to BGA, but why would they when a good public school is 2 blocks away??
  6. Lavergne has one bye week in early October. I will try to catch Hillwood's game - wherever it is if I can. Go 'rines and toppers!!!!!
  7. The people who bought homes in Westmeade/Brookmeade (people 25-40 yrs. old) in the 1960's / 70's / 80's are now between the ages of 55 and 75 typically. So, those neighborhoods have lots of retired and about to be retired folks...their kids who went to Hillwood back in the 1960's / 70's /80's are out of college, out in the world...some of them even moved to Williamson, Sumner, RUTHERFORD, Cheatam, etc,,, and now the "kids" have kids of their own who attend Brentwood, Harpeth, Wilson Central, etc.etc.... A house in Westmeade that was $42,000 in 1965 new and re-sold for $125,000 in 1982 - even being 17 years old - now resells for about $400,000 even though it's now over 40 years old. Location, location, location. If a young parent can get a really nice new house for half that and pay less tax in a surrounding county, most will do exactly that. It would be nice to keep a loyalty to where you grew up and played ball, etc...but come on. A 14 year old kid about to start high school won't care all that much where Mom and Dad went - especially if they can go to a school that is the modern day equivalent of the 1970's version of Hillwood, Overton, etc. (notice in the photo below, nice houses within walking distance of Lavergne High - kids can walk to school) I agree with the magnet school idea. That part of town's peak growth for young parents was many decades ago. I am as nostalgic as anybody, but being realistic has set in. It's time for the school to move on to the next phase. p.s. - I LOVED that 12 game win streak year before last, but was sad that more old HHS people from the old days made no attempt to go to the games. My sister said if they made the state championship game that she would fly back in from St. Louis and wear all green at the game. We're talking about a 50 year old lawyer. Of course, they fell in the semi-finals. However, THAT is the kind of spirit schools need. From the current AND past students.
  8. If Worthington at Riverdale is the kid who won the 400 meters in track as a 10th grader, people better take him serious. (wr/db?) I think Bryant at LHS would make a good D-1 college TE.
  9. I think playing Bryant some at DE and Adams at DT on short yardage situations every now and then shouldn't be out of the question. I don't think they should be using A-rod on D or to return kicks..even though he would be good at it.
  10. A pair of 6-6 wideouts? Are they converted hoops players? If so, are they superior athetes - like Keith Ramsey of Siegel who played some WR his last year, or just a couple of regular tall guys?
  11. If the Tennessean was right - that Brentwood only returns 2 starters on D and 4 on O, Smyrna should roll right through this game. (barring a mental or emotional letdown)
  12. a few years ago when they had that huge year in 4-a, the first game of the year was delayed by about 2 hours because the lights wouldn't come on. Those may be the same lights from when the school was built in like 1959 or whenever. Metro needs to pony up. If kids are in football or band, they won't be on the street getting into trouble (hopefully)...letting facilities crumble sends the wrong message about extra-carricular activities. **** PONY UP METRO *****
  13. Why is the game being played at a middle school...and is it true HHS only has about 27 players this year?
  14. The crowd should be really good for LHS - home opener, maybe not as hot and muggy (won't hold my breath for cool weather though). I hear Centennial was picked as a "middle of the pack" (improved) team in their region this year. Any win would be good. A convincing win like last year would be nice. but just make sure it's a win. Since LHS has a game under thier belt, maybe less "laundry on the filed" LOL
  15. What happened to the kicking/punting game? Wasn't last year's kicker going to be back as a senior?
  16. Not to start a "who has the most pain" thread...but the Metro h.s. I went to back in the day (Hillwood) - which had a 12 game winning streak 2 years ago in 4a, I counted 27 kids on their roster this year - IN 5A !!! And they only won 1 game last year if I recall correctly. I REALLY feel bad for those guys. There was a huge thread on here this summer about the rise and fall of Hillwood athletics. They should be allowed to compete in like 2a this year after all that has happened over there.
  17. quote: Cedar Grove Elem which is a Lavergne feeder school. ****************************************** Except hasn't some of that area been re-zoned to Smyrna? Much of that Rock Springs Rd. area? I think it has. That part about rezoning eastern Murfreesboro to Smyrna High was obviously a sarcastic jab at a certain "administrator." (and certainly has roots in the fight against the most recent re-zoning plan that forces kids that live 2 miles from LHS to go to Smyrna - 7 miles away)
  18. Couldn't Smyrna just have the head of Rutherford County Schools re-zone the entire eastern part of Murf. to attend Smyrna High instead of Oakland. That way, all of the Oakland team would now be at Smyrna, the kid would be eligible from having been re-zoned, they would have unthinkable depth at every position, etc. By the way, did the head of Rutherford County school system go to Smyrna and now his son plays there and his old coach from back in the day is now the principal there? Just asking.
  19. quote: Last year our band did: Carry on my wayward son (Kansas) Faithfully (Journey) Anyway you want it, drum solo Journey) Hotel California (Journey) ******************************** Hotel California was the Eagles, not Journey. ******************************** Was that Lebanon High?
  20. Regarding the damage to the track at LHS, maybe they should look for the culprits in remedial English class at Smyrna. "you cant do NOTIN right" There's a picture of it in this morning's newpaper. After they get out of prison, I look forward to having them wait on me at Burger King.
  21. yo, tell Mr. Laundry on the Field to paint those new additions to the press box. It looks like somebody stuck an outhouse on each end, unpainted like that!! LOL
  22. I'll go the other way and pick a low scoring game: LHS - 19 smyrna - 16
  23. Wait until you see this year's "Nightmare Before Christmas" show by the Lavergne High Wolverine Marching Band. I'm not just saying that. It really will kick serious butt.
