On offense, we had 2 Juniors. On Defense we had 3 Juniors. The rest were all Seniors. I played right Guard. On my Facebook page you can find a picture of the Seniors in my pictures. David Lacy. Those years put the bug in the TSSAA ear about expanding the classification system. We didn’t make the playoffs even with a 9-1 record and being ranked in top 10 in the state. Only had A-AAA so only 2 teams from each Region made the playoffs. Three way tie with SH and TN High. The third tiebreaker was our non conference game. We beat G’ville but their record was the worst of the three (Unicoi and VA High), even though G-Men beat Unicoi. And Unicoi was 2A while you all were 3A. We played the toughest schedule and got punished for it. Maybe we should have played a 1A team?

It’s ok. We can just sit on the home side if they don’t provide enough room. And we will ring our cowbells in their ears. Cowbell Surround Sound!

Steve and I were on the last team to beat DB back in 1988. His Junior and my Senior year. And yes. There were Sensabaugh kids in the team! LOL

I’ve seen DB in person. I wasn’t impressed. But, you never can tell how these things can work out. Either way, both teams will benefit from the competition come playoff time. BOTH teams will need to play it, and then forget it. Get back to Region play and focus on the next game. Beating DB can’t be the highlight of our season, nor can beating Betsy be theirs. There’s too much more to play!

If you only want to comment on the Quad in your area, and don’t feel qualified for comment on the others, we all understand. It’s a BIG State to cover! Give us what you got!

Ok. This is an early look. But this could be fun. Tell me who you got playing in the quarterfinals for each Quad. Let’s hear it 4A. From Elizabethton to Memphis, and all points in between. Sound off! And GO!

You will see Hurd start. If they do that, that would be THE weakest coaching move of all time! They would you be dooming the team’s chances to be competitive. And you send a message to your team that you do not have confidence in them. The line can’t protect him. He can’t take the heat. Coach looses the locker room and quit possibly his job. But I don’t think they will be hiding the QB or shying away from the game. That’s not how we do it up here in the hills. We may be DB and Betsy, but afterwards, we’re still Region 1.

I was at the Asheville game. I sat on the DB side with the Maupin’s and I just looked across the field and thought, we would fill those stands if the band isn’t there. Betsy travels well to all away games. Usually turning them into home games because we bring more fans than the host team. Not this time, because DB can really pack the house. It should be a huge crowd. Probably one of the biggest crowds you will ever see in that place. And don’t tell me that SH games bring big crowds. Because they don’t travel like we do. These young men are going to be treated to a sight most high school athletes will never get to experience. We’ve beaten every 3A-6A team in this Region. Except one. This will settle the question as to who is the dominant force in high school football. No more speculation. It will be settled. I personally think it’s good for these two to play each other. Like Alcoa and Maryville. It’s just a fun game and can really help both teams in their physical and mental preparation for the playoffs.

Whaley was out with an illness. HOLZER left as a precaution. There was still enough D and O to go around. This is a real team. Playing together. For each other. I’m more proud of that than anything. And the depth at about every position is incredible. Our next up can play at a high level and give others rest.

The running game will be a challenge. I was not impressed by the QB play at the Asheville game. If Betsy stops the run and puts pressure on the QB, it could be a 2 or 3 pic night. Things tend to happen when you are able to get a player out of his comfort zone. It’s gonna come down to line play (always does).

I know. But you’re guys couldn’t compete even without being harassed by our D-Line! What makes you think it will get any better when they are running for their lives? We play the game to decide the outcome. A lot can happen. But I just don’t see this going the Tribe’s way.

I don’t think Greeneville beats Betsy twice last season if we faced them again in the playoffs. Totally different team from the one that played in week 2. Took 4 games to figure out life without Bryson Rollins. Similar to what AC is going through, trying to figure out life without Walker Martinez. As long as you make the tournament and play your best ball, then you’ve got a chance. Regular season is just a tuneup.

This game means something to Betsy. Their band is sick and tired of hearing about DB’s huge band. The team is sick and tired of hearing how DB could beat them every year when DB can’t even beat Science Hill or Greeneville, who Betsy has owned in recent years. And as a former member of both the band and football team, I’m looking forward to this too. Of course, it’s been 35yrs since I played or marched. And the last time Betsy defeated the Tribe was also 35yrs ago. (1988) Time to break that mark.

Look back at recent history. 2019-scrimmage doesn’t go DB’s way and after a questionable hit on Cade Maupin (DB transfer to Betsy) a huge fight breaks out. 2021-Down at the Gunslinger 7v7 Challenge, Betsy 15 and under squad was undefeated and couldn’t be stopped. The were offered the opportunity to move up and play in the high school division to actually be challenged. Their first game was against the Tribe, coached by some ex NFL guy. (GS is the bomb) they laughed at the “kids” as we walked in. We laughed as we walked out. 2023-In local 7v7 this year, Betsy split their squads. And I don’t recall ever loosing to the Tribe. Even with backup QB’s playing. So there is recent history there. And then theirs always this too. 6A schools don’t like loosing to 4A schools. And everyone gets up for games against teams like Betsy and Greeneville. Emotions will be high!

Elizabethton Fighting Cyclone Marching Band, The Betsy Band, is defending division 2 Tennessee State Champions. And they’ve won 5 state championships in recent history. But, go on and tell me about how big DB’s band is……

I came over last week to watch the Tribe face Asheville. Drake Fisher at Sully East was supposed to be this great passer. But when you’re running for your life, it’s kinda difficult. Betsy stops the run on the way to the QB. DB’s can play short or vertical. LB play is downhill. They wake up choosing violence every day. The O-line will methodically wear you down and you have to respect the pass. This may be the best TEAM Football going on in this area. You have a few stars but everyone seems to step up. How do you think DB will deal with this? Oh. And it will be like a home game for us. I guarantee we will pack the house with rowdy cowbell ringing fans. I think we’ve had more fans than all of our hosts this season! What say y’all?

If you told me East would play dirty I would call you a liar. It’s horrible. We are kicking the crap out of them (3 pics in the first half). 72 is a punk. I normally don’t call out kids, but there’s no place for that kind of play in football. These refs suck too. Letting stuff go until someone gets hurt. When Alcoa, Greeneville, Maryville, Elizabethton and other top teams play each other, fans get excited! Beating up on the same ole teams every year in Region is boring. I’ve enjoyed playing different teams from different Regions and Classes over the last 4-5 years. There’s that unknown element that makes it more interesting. And now, you see teams looking outside of the state for games. I got to watch Asheville at DB last Friday night while Betsy was off. Watched the Alcoa game against the NY team on NFHS. It’s also good to watch other talent and see where we (East TN) stacks up. Variety really is the spice of life!
