  1. Sequoyah (with an H), Madisonville TN. Established 1996 combining Vonore HS and Madisonville HS. As George Burns once said, "If they're gonna talk about me, at least spell my name correctly".
  2. I rose to the bait (ahhh, bait!) on another thread and took offense at another posters opinion of my daughter's soccer team. Me sorry too. We've been blessed to have a soccer player in the family and behind all our monikers, I bet we know each other; we're the men and women coaching, refing and in my case, putting up block dugouts at 9:00pm last night using car head lights, since the girls are at home today, and we wanted the job finished. I have to believe those of you that know middle and west TN high school, I only know the girls as Real, Lobos, and the rest of the DI competitive world. I love the boards, though. Now, back to your usually transmitted rankings...
  3. Sequoyah HS- 2005 11/4/1 3rd in dist 5 A/AA behind Grace and Sweetwater Sequoyah HS- 2006 9/6/1 3rd in dist 5 A/AA behind Grace and Sweetwater Sequoyah HS- 2007 1/1 Raising teams from AYSO strongholds Madisonville and Vonore, 1 player, 1 PLAYER with competitive training, a few basketballers and softballers, a faculty "representative" (who saw her very first HS match this week) and volunteer men from the community coaching, mowing and putting the lines down. Hey mustcoach, somehow, we manage.
  4. keeperFan15, call a lawyer. If it's too hot for girls, it's too hot for boys, it's discrimination and against the spirit of Title 9.
  5. Sequoyah 0 v Red Bank 1 Sequoyah 1 v McMinn Co 0 * Sequoyah 0 v Soddy daisy 1 Sequoyah 2 v Sweetwater 0 I happen to know a lot of the girls on County, the asterik is because I know it was 90% the JV. I am assuming RB and SD substituted freely, I just don't know anything about their teams. FYI, because several Chattanoogans asked, Sequoyah HS is A/AA, opened 11 years ago combining Madisonville HS and Vonore HS. There are about a thousand kids, girls soccer is in District 5, Region 3.
  6. I'm gonna post this over on the kickball side, but thanks for asking about the scrimmages 8/11 at SQHS Sqhs-0, Jeff Co-1 Boyd-2, SQHS-2 8/18 at Chattanooga Red Bank-1, SQHS-0 McMinn CO-0, SQHS-1 Soddy-1, SQHS-0 Sweetwater-0, SQHS-2 2-3-1 for the pre season. We still count ties. The 2 that matter up there are Boyd and Sweetwater. There are 16 on the squad and they are not very fit but getting there. It starts for real thursday @ Rhea Co.
  7. After 2 disasterous seasons of mens soccer at Hiwassee (1997, 0-11-1; 1998, 1-13-2), I wasn't sure if College Soccer was the right thing for me, or if I could ever recruit well enough to compete at D1 JUCO. I did talk myself into giving it one more try, and as the boys returned named a captain of those sophomore players, a young man that had flunked out in 97 but fought his way back in 1999. Our tallent was a little better but so were our opponants, anyway, first match I gave the pre-game speech, of "everyone give it their best...work hard... don't worry about the scores..." I was EXPECTING a poor result. I always gave the captain the last words, so I said, "do you have anything to add?" WL stood up and said, "If you don't expect to win, don't get on the field. I know they have some players but so do we, If I have to do it by myself, I will, but don't step on the pitch unless you plan to win." We won a few that year, and a few more the next, and by 2003 we were 11-6-1 and winning region. This at a junior college, where 70% of every team was freshmen. Tell them for me, and for all the other fans, expect to win. Play like that.
  8. Well, I've had a couple people respond to the plea for a bobcat here on CoachT. Thanks, everyone, we have someone and a back up if he can't get it done. As to the play day Had a call last night from a school that was in last year and someone, not me, promised them they could be this yr, SO, I'm shuffling the schedule a little. SQHS vs Jeff CO at 1:00 SQHS vs Boyd Buchanan at 2:05 I'm not sure about #3, it will be later, if I can get referee support for the late entry it will be about 4:30. Games start at 8:15 on both fields and the field is... Loudon, Sweetwater, McMinn Central, Seymour, Kings Ac, Greenback, TPHS, Rhea Co, Oliver Springs, Boyd, Jeff Co, Walker Valley and SQHS.
  9. Good Monday to you all. A note to you faithful; Soccer has a playday this saturday, Gate opens at 7:15 with games beginning at 8:15 on both fields. As many of you know, I want(ed) to build dugouts and bleachers for the soccer field and 100% of the money we raise this coming weekend goes to that. Please stop by- we're hosting 11 other teams and their parents and fans. I have included a plug for A&W with every mailer and email for those that have time and are looking for good food. Back to the dugouts and bleachers, now that we have a little operating capital, I can't find anyone to dig out the hill for the dugouts! I have money, I tried half a dozen people so if any of you know someone with a small backhoe that want's to do a good service and make a little money, send them towards the insurance office. I have a couple men who are standing by to build, but... we have to dig first. Anyway, I hope to see you saturday. Wear your red!

    Scrimmages

Sequoyah has a play day 8/11 Some north schools (Jeff Co, Seymour, Loudon) Some south schools (McMinn Cent, Boyd, Sweetwater) 12 teams in all Sequoyah will also be at Chattanooga 8/18.
  11. Well, specificly (specificaly, specificlly, to make a fine point) I was referring to Sweetwater, Sequoyah or McMinn Central in A/AA and Bradley, Walker, McMinn Co and Cleveland in AAA. We (A/AA) play in districts that are Chattcentric, so what you think is important... and yes, we are used to being overlooked. Funny, too, what a measure of success might be. I know a team that 3 years ago didn't score a goal, last year won a couple matches; for them success might be stringing together 2 or 3 wins. SQHS has consistantly had 10 win seasons but doesn't win the big game, Sweetwater graduated some good players, it will be interesting to see what they bring in 07. No one really wants to show their hand... especially the "bit" players.
  12. Well, you know, the "Chattanooga" area extends to the Loudon county line, for all intent. How do you big city folks feel about the schools out in the reaches?
  13. Excellent, Excellent! I've been looking for this to my own purpose. We (Girls Soccer) are still trying to coordinate a few matches and might have to stray onto a friday; we don't want to play at home when SQHS Football is away- too far away. Besides being dedicated Soccer players, our girls are huge football fans. Buzz for your lads while the girls warm up has been great. It reflects the efforts being made by the boys. A rising tide carries all boats.
  14. Well, Good day to all you. Might I recomend a sessation of hostilities, ergo, we can move ahead with the business of the day. In about a month the hallowed halls of ivy will be refilled, the lines will be cast and the teams formed. Whatsay, shall we be behind them, or nay?
  15. Good day, lads! I need a few minutes and a volunteer tomorrow evening down on the pitch*. Torseq2 has graciously agreed to help, but it will require at least one more. There is a spot of measuring to be done, as well as some "line of sight" work, I'm trying to make sure dugout roofs won't interfere with fans viewing from bleachers. * pitch is what we urbane, well informed (and slightly snotty) gents call a soccer field and besides, after 6 months, I hate Sequoyah Football post to fall to page 2...
  16. Good Monday to all. I will acuse my usual revelrie as to this and that and ask my question of each of you merry lads; Is there a water shortage at the HS? It might not matter much to Baseball and Softball, but the girls have a home soccer match in the very near future and with all the changes, coaches leaving, coaches moving, I'm sure a few details are still being worked out. Would someone PLEASE TURN THE SPRINKLERS ON?? T and I had our differences for sure, but I will give him his due, he expanded and manicured the pitch like it had never been. After all the cheering died down at his departure, could, maybe, someone run the water? and, mow? Or even tell me how? I will if that is what we must do. I come here and ask because I know the men who work read this. I am not asking Red Chief, or Red Nation or Torseq2, any of you to do it, just tell me how. How, that's an indiginous American word, isn't it? (a little humor)

Thanks for cranking this up... Looks good up to about 5 or 6. It's all a best guess, I know but I believe there are a couple suprises out there...

    red cards

I know I keep lurking around here tonight, waiting on scores, but one more 2 cents from a ref and I'll do what I ask of others, shut up and play... As to some cabal of referees, coluding on players past indiscressions, don't give us too much credit. I did about a dozen matches this season and refereed 2 teams twice and one 3 times. Usually, I have a partner that I see frequently on the pitch, never off, we don't live in the same towns or have anything else in common. I don't research the teams on match day to see which player is a frequent offender, and there is no place that "list" is kept. In the case of one team I refereed 3 times this season, a player liked to strike his opponant in the back with his elbow, usually a split second after the other man has played the ball off. He's really quite good, coming in, as if to challenge and keeping his opponant between us so I can't "see" him hit- often the opponant jerks around and he raises both hands and asks, "did you see that?". I warn him, give a fou and the second time I issue a caution. Three matches, three warnings, three cautions. I make note of the caution in the ref report but do you suppose another man can sift through, say, 10 matches, look for that player's number and offenses? waiting on scores....

    red cards

yellowcardfever- If I took offense, I wouldn't be a ref!@!! (some humor); we do train, we work with different partners to learn and compare but in the end I would tell you honestly, I strive to be consistant from game to game. I have not been; but I strive to be- and just with me, I don't ever go to Nashville or Johnson City, I have no clue how matches are called there. I played HS (in 1969!!) I've refereed, coached and what I consider the worst job in soccer, a keeper's dad in competitive! And the pay, don't let that confuse you. I leave my office about 3:30 for a 5:30 start, when I ref in a community 40 miles away, which I do fairly often. I get home at 9:30, buy myself a coke and a candy bar and use 4 or 5 gallons of gas. Do the math. KeeperFan15- I don't compare Soccer to any other sport. In football, the rules are different, the pads are different and there are like 7 on the field officials for 22; in basketball, 3 to govern the behavior of 10 players. Imagine a soocer match with 3,4,5 men running around, getting in the way, blowing whistles, calling off the ball fouls, come on, now...just the thought of that makes you cringe. So, it's the integrity of the game that ends up being what's at stake. The center ref or 2 man, has just himself, his experience and knowledge (or lack of it) and the spirit and integrity of the game. And a whistle. Forgot that. Pretty simple, really, just like the game. Don't curse at the ref or your opponant saving us all that pesky paper work. Simple enough. And tell your dad, "hey pop, stop screaming like a madman at the ref. It's embarrasing" FIFA writes the rules and 192 countries agree on them. We try to enforce them, you play by them. Let's keep the courts out of it.

    red cards

As a ref this past season, I haven't posted in ref threads. But...can't...hold...back.... Turbocab- as far as governing the game, if not TSSAA, then who? FIFA? USSF? What happens when a player draws 2, 3 red cards in a season? Maybe he doesn't care about the fine, maybe the school pays it, I don't know. What if the coach (and the fans) support the player? I sent off a kid this season for cursing me in front of the opposing teams fans. For 30 minutes I was derided by home team parents for carding the kid, one mother even said, "If you'd throw more cards, he wouldn't have to get so mad". His coach didn't apologize, the other players on his team laughed about it and I heard he was ejected again a few weeks later, for the same thing. He hasn't learned a thing, only me. In College, 5 cautions earns a one match suspension; I liked that. I would propose that as referee associations, when a team amasses so many cautions and ejections, if they don't discipline themselves, the association stop supporting the school. Try to schedule a home match when no referees will come to your field. I did read a post a few weeks ago that I applauded, someone said it well; Before you decide I'm too old or out of shape or didn't play the game and don't understand you try to keep in mind, 80% of the men and women that call matches do it for the love of soccer. I leave my job early, don't do my chores, drive 30 or 40 minutes and get paid hardly nothing, to what? get cursed at by some 15 yr old or get called names by angry women? I can stay home, my wife and kids will do that for free...
  21. I know, I know, you're thinking, "what in the wide, wide world is HE doin' still at work?" For the record, I almost always ruminate while at my command post in the hidden lair. I have nothing to add to the discourse of today except I hope we've seen the end of SQHS' business being put in the street. If we are a family, or a team or at least on the same side of the river, let's push through this and move on. We don't have to sit by a fire and sing Kum-Ba-Ya, but maybe we can support what we have. Two random thoughts though, Somebody get that clown off 411 from in front of the school. Don't know him, but I bet his kid sleeps in class... SID, nice piece on Tellico soccer win, except, now don't take this the wrong way, we're gonna be friends now, I don't mean to cause trouble, and it was a good article, but..... There was no handball. None, nada, zip, no handball. I was five feet away, and didn't miss anything. It was a good goal. I ought to know, I was the referee that night. Now, how did that song go? oh yea, "Someones frying Lord, kum-ba-ya," "Smell them catfish, Lord, kum-ba-ya..."
  22. Hey, some of you warhorses, and you know who you are, thanks for all the advice on bleachers for the kickball field. I ask the soccermoms to get together next tuesday night and I intend to sell them on the idea. Whils't the grand questions of life, liberty and who the AD is gonna be are being worked out, I can move the chains. On Saturday, August 11, when 15 other highschools visit Sequoyah for a WOMENS soccer jamboree, I'm going to have bleachers on the soccer side, a functioning concession stand (thanks to L Mc) restrooms and one entrance. Friday Morning philosophy: "It is amazing how much people can get done, if they don't mind who get's the credit" Sandra Swinney "You can't push a string" Dwight Eisenhower "We must all hang together or most assuredly, we will all hang separately" Benjamine Franklin "Gettin' good players is easy, gettin' em to play together is the hard part" Casey Stengle "Win together, Lose together, play together, stay together" Deborah Mancuso (and my personal favorite) "Ten points from Griffendor; for being an insufferable know it all" Severaus Snape, Potions Master
  23. I believe I will try to go for a few minutes today, my own bad self. Torseq2 sez he won't be seen with me, but any of the rest of you fellers, I hope to see you in the bleachers.
  24. My Grandmother always told us not to talk about the family at Church. You might be at Church, but you never know who's listening. Made sense to me.
  25. Sequoyah HS is hosting a Play Day on sat. Aug 11. We're going to have to hold this at 16 teams and there are 13 in already!! We have a couple different competitive levels, are using official referees and will charge a small fee for the team plus gate charge on fans. There are 2 fields, right next to each other, concessions, facilities, trainers and the first 3 coaches that contact me; I'm taking this down.
