what truly makes a coach great? gary householder of seymour and benny hammonds of gatlinburg pittman have won a remarkable amount of games in their high school careers.however gary householder has a playoff record of 18 wins and 20 losses sub .500 and hammonds is worse at 16 and 22 leading me to believe each plays a fairly tough but mostly cookie cutter schedule.i was told that seymour begged not to be put in the same region with fulton and austin east(shouldn't a champion not back down?) and hammonds wimped out and moved to 2a(pigeon forge a 2a school opted to play up in 3a).even sevier county won state once(after their star quarterback left to transfer to seymour) so really what makes a coach great? amazing to accomplish these many wins but.......

I think the records speak for themselves...the play-off records that is. Both are sub .500 when playing decent teams. GP dropped Seymour from their schedule and eliminated on of the county's best rivalaries. I think it will only be a matter of time until they drop Pigeon Forge as well...Given the Tigers beat the Highlanders a few more times.

What Steve Brewer does year in and year out is what makes a good coach. Costantly facing teams with more speed and talent and still winning. SCHS's state title, although it has been a while, shows what happens with a good coach. SCHS was out sized, out skilled, and out manned. Glenncliff was out coached. (and SCHS had Shane Kelley). Look for SCHS to make some noise in the play-offs and look for GP to lose to Alcoa by 90 pts. and Seymour to exit early also.

beef your wrong on a couple of things. first, brewer wouldn't have the success he does if mike biddix didn't turn the program around in the late '80s. SCHS had been terrible for 30 years before. second, brewer has had most of his success with the current playoff format, while both hammonds and householder had succes when only 2 teams from each district made the playoffs. also, the reason gp dropped to 2a is because they have 200 fewer students than the next smallest school in 3a. by the way, your crazy if you think there aren't a couple hundred teams in the state who would have gotten slaugtered by alcoa (schs included remember the jamboree). gp was just the unlucky school who got to play them in the 1st round.

At the end of the year, it will play out the same it always does. I got no problem with GP dropping to 2A, but dropping Seymour from the schedule...there really isn't a good reason for that, that was one of the biggest games in the county!! How many times has Brewer's teams made the play-offs as the last team in the region to get in? They compete with Dobbins-Bennett for 1st place in the Big East every year. By the way, Mike Biddix has nothing to do with Steve Brewer's success. :D
