Break out your throwback Jenny Hyle jerseys because the Lady Cats are back on the prowl.

Santa Fe’s high school girls basketball team is off to its best start in recent memory and the reason is obvious.

The Lady Cats’ varsity success is a direct result of a middle school program which is close to achieving dynasty status.

Santa Fe wrapped up its fourth-straight Maury County Tournament championship with a 42-13 win over Columbia Academy Saturday.

No school has won four consecutive county championships since records started officially being kept in 1981.

Overall Santa Fe has won 12 of the 26 known county tournaments, including seven of the last 13 championships.

The Lady Cats’ current streak began in 2003 with a 20-1 team that defeated Culleoka 37-15 for its first county title since 1999 and also reached the Final Four of the TNT Class 2A State Tournament.

That team was led by 8th graders Lindsey Sewell, Macenze White and Lauren Gardner. That trio combined for 29 of the team’s 37 points in the county title game.

Fast forward to Tuesday night where that same triumvirate, now juniors in high school, combined for 51 of the Lady Cats’ 59 points in a win at Spring Hill.

Santa Fe is currently 6-1 and has already notched wins over Moore County, Cornersville and the aforementioned Lady Raiders.

Head coach Jerry Potts, who coached both the 2003 junior high champions as well as this year’s varsity squad, has high hopes for his team.

His roster is filled with players that achieved great success at the junior high level and that attitude is now prevalent on the varsity stage.

So while middle school sports don’t get the attention that they probably deserve, it’s good to note how important those feeder programs are.

Is this write up a little too much? This is the second write up of this sort for this team. Has single A girls basketball in Maury County got so bad that when a team is doing well a write up is done up on them this early in the season? Don't get me wrong... I am glad the girls are doing well and as far as the Middle School Teams go I think it has become a dynasty but the true test for Maury County Girls Basketball comes in High School.

The question is can this group of Santa Fe girls compete consistently with Moore County and Richland in there district... can they compete consistently with Summertown, Collinwood, Perry County, and Wayne County in the Region? Another in the area that they should be compared to competing with is Forrest. Can these girls finally climb the mountain a beat these teams... and it is a mountain because these teams have taken Santa Fe to the wood shed several times. So the Santa Fe girls don't have a hill to climb... they have a mountain to overcome!

Santa Fe girls are very a youthful talented group. But I will say this... the coach needs to do a better job of stressing fundamentals to them. He needs to work on shooting form and dribbling skills because just watching them play that is there weakest link as of now. This team relies on their great post play but the guards will be challenged to knock down outside shots and this is where their shooting form will come into play. The coach has to do a better job with this and fundamentals period.

A side note... You don't have to go all the way back to the Jenny Hyle days for good Santa Fe girl’s teams. Santa Fe was back to back District Champions in 96 & 97. Jenny teams were good but so were the 96 & 97 teams.
