Shot Clock

I would like the opinion on Shot Clock.

We, Booker T. Washington, just came for the "Best of the West" tournament in Chino Hill, CA where they play a shot clock. We finished 8th in the tournament of 32 but we had to make a great adjustment with the shot clock. The people where shocked that we did not play with a shot clock. In a tournament in New York four years ago, We play against a shot clock and really struggled. I think at some point in time, Tennessee should go to a shot clock. What are your thoughts. I also know that some AAU events have shot clocks. I know the Rivercity Classic in Memphis does.

I think the shot clock in M.S. and H.S. would be awesome. I have been to many AAU tournaments and the pace of the game is sooooooooooooo much more fan friendly.

I don't think it will happen any time soon. The expense of putting in shot clocks, plus upgrading clock systems at most of the gyms in Tennessee would prove to costly. Plus you have to pay another person as part of your game cost.

With many school systems strapped for money now, I can't see TSSAA mandating shot clocks.

I would ove to see it happen....

The lack of a shot clock in our high school ball makes no sense. Basketball is not played without a shot clock anymore. All AAU events that mean anything require shot clocks. Even the lesser known basketball associations like MAYB and PrimeTime and others use the shot clock whenever possible. All the college exposure events use the shot clock. The shot clock is in college and the pros. Why not in Tennessee high school ball where some of the best college/pro girls basketball players in the country come from?

Only reason I can think of is money.

Surely it must have been proposed to the TSSAA at some time. Anybody know what happened?

I agree it would be fun, but for marginal teams like maybe Warren County this year, it would really hurt teams like these. For teams of lesser talent they need to play a boring ,deliberate game to have a chance. I guess all I'm trying to say is, that it would benifit the more talented teams.

Good point. The better teams in Highschool play tough defence that forces their opponent to work for their shots. :(

Federation rules have the (5 sec. count) when closely-guarded rule. It works. :D

The shot clock would force teams to put it up even if they were not open.

A missed shot, in that case, could be the same as a turnover to teams with lots of tall kids. :(

First of all it would speed most games up significantly. This may be fan friendly at first but with good coaching and kids being patient some less talented teams have a legitimate shot at upsets. With the shot clock in place there would be many more lopsided games. If you make the shot clock mandatory you make the coach less significant, especially to those schools who are not blessed with great athletes. Also, the player who understands basketball well and is not that great an athlete becomes less important. I for one oppose any suggestion of a shot clock. Being from the Upper Cumberland where we are not blessed with a benchful of great athletes I like to see the coach have a shot at controlling tempo and playing those bigger schools the way he/she wants to. Finally, I believe kids that understand how to play both slow and fast ultimately make better basketball players than those who just play fast, like streetball.
