Recommended Posts

Region 1-5A Week 9 Finals

Bearden 17, Sevier Co. 3

Dobyns-Bennett 38, Campbell Co. 3

Karns 26, Science Hill 13

Jefferson Co. - OPEN

The weeks results solidified Bearden as the #1 seed and Dobyns-Bennett as the #2 seed in Region 1-5A.

If Campbell Co. beats Karns and Jefferson Co. loses to Bearden, Campbell County is the #3 seed and Jefferson Co. is the #4 seed.

If Campbell Co. loses to Karns and Jefferson Co. loses to Bearden, Jefferson Co. is the #3 seed and Sevier Co. is the #4 seed with Sevier Co. having the tiebreaker over the Cougars.

Region 2-5A Week 9 Finals

If Oak Ridge beats Farragut, William Blount is the #1 seed with tiebreaker over Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge is the #2 seed, and Farragut is the #3 seed.

If McMinn Co. beats Bradley Central and Ooltewah beats Soddy Daisy, Ooltewah is the #4 seed having the tiebreaker over the Cherokees.

If McMinn Co. beats Bradley Central and Ooltewah loses to Soddy Daisy, McMinn Co. is the #4 seed.

So if the playoffs were to be right now the games would be as followed:

#1 Farragut vs. #4 Campbell County at Farragut

#1 Bearden vs. #4 Ooltewah at Bearden

#2 William Blount vs. #3 Jeff. County at William Blount

#2 DB vs. #3 Oak Ridge at DB

If all the higher seeds won the second round looks like this.

#1 Bearden vs. #2 William Blount at Bearden

#1 Farragut vs. #2 DB at Farragut

Correct me if I am wrong.

Also IMO, region 2 sweeps making the matches:

#2 WB vs. #4 Ootlewah at WB

#1 Farragut vs. #3 Oak Ridge at Farragut

Both regions are pretty straightforward -- as these things go. Where it gets interesting is if the improbable occurs. What if, for instance, Science Hill pulls the huge upset and defeats Dobyns-Bennett, while Karns knocks off Campbell Co. That would create a 4-way tie (Campbell Co., Science Hill, Karns, Sevier Co.) for 4th place in Region 1.

So looking at all of the head-to-head matchups involving these 4 teams, 2 of the teams are 2-1 (Sevier Co., Campbell Co.), while the other 2 teams in this scenario are 1-2 (Karns, Science Hill). Since no team went undefeated against the other 3, you move to the next tie-breaker -- as I understand it. That next tie-breaker is overall record. Two of the teams are 4-6 (Campbell Co., Science Hill); two are 3-7 (Karns, Sevier Co.). Can the 3-7 teams be eliminated and then revert to the head-to-head result between the 4-6 teams (Campbell Co. defeated Science Hill) to determine the 4th playoff qualifier? If so, it seems the same elimination could have/should have been in effect for the head-to-head records. If, however, you can't eliminate any teams based on overall record, since no ONE team owns an advantage over ALL the others, you would then move to the next tie-breaker -- most victories over teams with winning records. If it comes to this, there is ONE team that stands apart from the other 3. That would be Science Hill with 2 such victories, assuming Morristown West beats Cocke Co. I'm just not sure in this potential Region 1 5A scenario if it would come to this. Any insight out there on how the tie-breakers would be applied?

TSSAA says it will have scenarios up -- and therefore the answer -- on its site at some point later today.
