Science Hill Wins Girls Invitational

A decade or so from now when girls wrestling most likely will be a recognized sport by TSSAA, many of the female wrestlers at this week's state tournament can show their sons and daughters newspaper clippings, internet stories and the 2009 tournament program as proof of their place in history.

None will be more proud to do so than the ladies from Science Hill, as in years to come can point to medals and a first place trophy for winning the inaugural state invitational traditional title.

The talented Hilltoppers had 79 points and two champions - Janie Goldstein (105) and Victoria Nguyen (125) - along with a runner-up and three thirds.

Runner-up Soddy Daisy had 73 points and one champion in Blakely Morgan (130). The Trojans, who won the 2008 girls duals crown, had two runners-up and two who placed third. Stone Memorial was third with 60 points in the 18-team field and one champion in Ashley Sherrill (120).

"We worked hard all year and winning the first tournament is great for our program,'' said Science Hill coach Jon Renner. ''We lose two seniors, but with six returners and a state title hopefully we can get more girls to wrestle next year.''

Where It Started: Red Bank (coached then by Dickie Brown) and Soddy Daisy (coached by current coach Steve Henry) started it a decade ago, with the state's first girls wrestliing match in 1999 as a fundraiser for the boys program. Now known as the ''Battle Along Highway 27'', the annual Lion-Trojan match draws several hundred fans yearly and is one of the highlites of each wrestling season.

Move over Shazzon: McMinn County has its first state champ since 1988 as Kelsey Hampton was crowned champ at 112 ... coach Dave Stoika said thah Kelsey's sister will be on the team next year and maybe this success will bring more interest to the sport. In 1988, McMinn County's Shazzon Bradley was state champ at 275.
