Ridgeway 77, Bolivar Central 46

Tarik Black appreciates the fact that University of Memphis men’s basketball coach Josh Pastner has held true to his word of supporting him, especially considering his lengthy and intense recruiting process is over.

So much, in fact, that the Ridgeway power forward provided his future college coach with a glimpse of what he could expect when he suits up as a member of the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class next year.

Against Bolivar Central Saturday night in the Ridgeway Thanksgiving Classic, the 6-8 Black fielded a baseline pass from Cameron Golden, took a single hop, then delivered an electrifying one-handed slam over Bolivar’s Tevin Coleman that set off a wild celebration in the stands. That particular play, as it turned out, was part of a blazing start for the Roadrunners and left Pastner — who stood at courtside opposite the Ridgeway bench — grinning, as he watched Black propel the Roadrunners to a convincing 77-46 win.

Ridgeway (1-1), coming off a 74-72 overtime loss at home to Sheffield 11 days ago, was barely challenged against a previously-unbeaten and undersized Bolivar squad. The Roadrunners reeled off the game’s first nine points, converted each of their 11 field goals in the second period to build a 46-21 halftime advantage, and saw their margin balloon to a much as 30 points before Ridgeway coach Wes Henning began clearing his bench with 1:40 remaining in the third.

Black, who signed with the U of M two weeks ago, was the first Roadrunner to exit the contest and, moments after the game, Pastner felt compelled to pay his future player a visit in the Ridgeway locker room.

“It was a great to see him,” Black said of Pastner. “He has done everything he said he was going to do after the recruiting process, showing me a lot of love. Some coaches, after you sign with a school, you don’t hear from them. But seeing him here says a lot about what kind of person he is.”

While a majority of the spectators in Ridgeway’s gymnasium came to watch Black, they also observed a Roadrunner team that exemplified a wealth of success against Bolivar (3-1), courtesy of their deep bench.

Although Black and swingman Marterrance Brook finished with 11 points each to pace Ridgeway, Henning was just as grateful that nine different Roadrunners had scored by intermission.

Ricky Tisdale, one of only two returning starters from last year’s team that advanced to the Class AA state quarterfinals, lead Bolivar with 20 points.

Bolivar also played covington in the Ridgeway tournament, an Bolivar won by 2 in overtime but covington is by farr the best team, an im sure Bolivar does'nt want to see them again.

Let me get this right, Bolivar is supposed to worry about meeting a team they know they can beat. I dont think so. If Covington was that much better than Bolivar then it would seem to me that they would win the game.
