Same as in the Soddy-Daisy tournament. Sequatchie's goal was to get to the gold bracket but at least they finished both of those tournaments with a win. They also won the Meigs tournament, gold bracket.

Their pool was really tough, with Bob Jones and Grace (with Walker pitching) but that's why you enter such events. Some of the players didn't get in from the prom until early Saturday morning but I'd rather them play good competition a little sleepy, than not enter a good tournament because of scheduling. Losses were 4-3 to Bob Jones and 4-2 to Grace. Against Jones they actually had more hits, 7 to 6, but Jones left few on base. They were very efficient getting runners over and their leadoff (Miss State signee) was a difficult out to say the least. Sequatchie used their number 4 pitcher, not necessarily in ability but in varsity innings pitched this year, against Jones and she did a good job overall, all 4 earned in 6 innings. 1-1 game in the first, Sequatchie's Mitchell and Tabor had hits. 3-1 Jones in the third with three of their six hits. 4-1 after a solo HR. Sequatchie got two back in the fourth. Houk bunted over a runner who'd walked but she beat the throw. Jones had their only error, one scored, and a single by Girdley scored Houk. Another hit, by Brock, put the tying run at third but they couldn't get Girdley in.

Against Grace, I didn't think Sequatchie's defense was sharp at all. There was only one error, a late drop that didn't affect the score, but there were hits that this group is capable of making the plays on and does routinely. Grace ended with 9 hits, Sequatchie only 4, all late. Grace led 1-0 in the second, infield single when the fielder waited on the ball, sacrifice bunt and then a bunt nobody fielded, bad communication. 3-0 in the third, started the same way with an infield single, not enough aggressiveness against a good runner. Two bloops into the outfield and one that barely went off a fielder's glove in the grass gave Grace the three run lead.

Sequatchie had their first hits in the fifth. Girdley, Mitchell, Burgess all had good shots with Mitchell and Burgess getting the RBIs, 3-2. Walker homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth, 4-2. I thought Grace had two or three strong hits for the game and she had two of them. Good in the circle, good at the plate, just a junior too. Sequatchie's Houk took the loss, she has done well for the most part since her first pitching game, a loss to Meigs, her ERA had been in the 1.00 range since then, roughly 1.75 entering the tournament.

Sequatchie beat Rhea, Jefferson, then a little surprising, Hixson in the silver final as was mentioned in the article.

Yes, I was impressed with hitting of your Pitcher and Catcher against us (Rhea) Saturday. The two home runs by your Pitcher were very impressive. Wish we could have given you guys a better game. We have been in a funk since we lost to Soddy. We cannot keep the ball in the ballpark, and cannot get off the field with two outs. What makes it worst is that we are not hitting the ball. Would have been nice to score more than one run when we left 5 runners on base in the first two innings.

Anyway, good luck for the rest of the season Indian. Hope the next time we met that we are playing a little better. It does not get any easier for us we get Soddy tomorrow.

She had a grand slam vs Bledsoe tonight, about 250 ft, and helped the team to an 11-1 district win. She nearly had one that would have won it vs Jones had the rest of the game went the same way. It took an amazing catch by the Jones CF, went over the temporary fence then managed to hold onto the the ball while knocking the fence over. The team is capable of doing some good things, sometimes they're not as sharp as they should be (one-run, eight-inning district win last week against the last place team).

Sometimes coaches specifically request tough pools. Looks like yet another tough pool for the Coffee County tourney. If you can keep from getting frustrated it should help in the long run.
