GPS won at Sequatchie Thursday night 58-51. Good game though at first it appeared it would be a blowout. 14-3 early in the first quarter, 20-8 after one, GPS. Sequatchie had 8 turnovers in the first quarter. GPS led 30-10 early in the second and things looked to be getting really ugly but Seq cut it 35-20 by halftime.

Third quarter lead remained around 13-15, and GPS still led by double figures until a 3-pointer by Seq's Barker, 47-39 with five minutes to go into the game. 51-44 at 3:00 on a McDonough 3 (Sequatchie), and then 51-47, Barker 3 at 2:30.

GPS made a good enough percentage of FTs late but Seq cut it as low as 3, 54-51 with 20 seconds left with a lay-up by McAfee. GPS made 1-2 FT, 55-51, and after a turnover, the only Sequatchie turnover of the fourth, GPS added a lay-up and the foul shot with less than five seconds to go.

Sequatchie shot 60 percent from the field but had 17 more turnovers than GPS, a big reason for the loss. Many were unforced. For Sequatchie, Barker had 18 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, Greene had 12 points, 8 rebounds at post. Caldwell scored 17 for GPS with three three-pointers. Clay was relatively well contained with 10 points but did a lot of good things on the defensive end.

Sequatchie didn't want a moral victory, had some chances and the odds would have been greater if not for such a poor first quarter but they ought to be able to build from it. GPS quickness and strength took a while to get used to, it seemed. GPS is a good ball team, probably will turn out to be one of the best on the schedule. Plenty of speed, good enough height, shooters, and physically strong.

Was the turnovers a product of it being early in the season Indian, or is there some concern? I haven't had a chance to watch much this year that's why I asked.

Part of it was it being so early, most of it was the opponent. This group has a good shot at winning the Division II state. At least 3 of their juniors have a good chance to play in college including the guard who's rated among the nation's top 100 players in her class, in at least one service. They're really quick and strong defensively. Still, the turnovers weren't an outrageous number, I've seen teams with twice as many, it's just the GPS had so few (four) they were able to score more despite making a lower percentage of their shots. And the turnovers decreased through each quarter, down to 1 in the fourth. Sequatchie has a good chance at winning the district but so do the other teams and even Notre Dame appears to have improved a lot. Sequatchie will see another tough opponent Monday, Polk County.

Member rating, it was asked, probably mostly concerns whether the person doing the rating agrees or disagrees with an opinion :roflol:

Green for Seq. has improved from last season. Barker is the type of player that is fun to watch. I haven't seen some of the teams in this district over the summer so it is too early to pick a favorite, but Seq. should be mentioned at the top.

GPS has solid athletes and the guard was right on with her 3's.

Good luck to both teams and I thought this was a wise game to schedule.
